I've always read about TF2 and CSGO keys. Anyone mind explaining these to the common man?

They're simply used as currency. You can use them to purchase other items or games from traders. Then, they put the keys on sale on the market, and they get money from it.

+1 Only 1 thing you missed to mention is that keys are cheaper when purchased outside of steam from traders, this way you're paying even less for a game that's already cheaper in another region, the more keys it takes to buy the game the bigger the discount.
In case anyone wonders why keys would be cheaper outside the market, see it as store credit, noone is going to buy store credit for full price and since it's the only way for people to cash out high value items (think dota 2/cs:go/tf2 items) they lower the price.
