I would do a vanilla playthrough and then installing mods.

You should play the vanilla game for a while, so you'll see wich parts of the game you like and dislike and then install mods to modify them.

It's hard to explain but I do that when I play a game like skyrim. I play it for a long time without using any mods, then I start installing some so I can enjoy the differences.
