And the remaining LCD Decks are on permanent price reduction until stock is gone as well. As are the Docks apparently.

I bought my Deck earlier this year on sale. Have enjoyed using it since then this but this still stings a bit. It's the same price but better in almost every way!

I can see that for sure. I got mine in 2022, so I've had a chance to really dive into it, and the combo of the OLED and enhanced battery life plus some other tweaks like larger potential storage, is pretty compelling. Not in November, but into the New Year, I can definitely see adopting the new version.

Plus I can then give my LCD version to my wife. :)

Wish they would offer some kind of trade in option :) Have considered that I can give my current one to my son and upgrade. But he's probably not old enough just yet, and I don't really have the budget for it now. But hopefully sometime in the future :)

I consider this very affordable and I live in a third-world country. Don't think that Valve makes any profit on the cheapest Deck, or if it does it's negligible. Handheld that can play decent number of newer AAA games without many hiccups can't be any cheaper than 400 if it isn't heavily subsidized.

A appreciate your diplomatic response, but that's not what it's about.

$400 once the price is adjusted, and tax added works out to at least $800 here.
And because it's not available here, it would cost probably $1000 to parallel import it.
My PC cost the same amount, so why would I buy a portable as well for the same price?

but

...tax added works out to at least $800 here ... $1000 to parallel import it

you really don't look that casual!

(this reminds me a bit those who calculates cost per hour of gameplay, when buying games... i mean, could be your perfect way of doing things, but really not mine. makki considers it fair, also thinks about Valve not doing much... i know Taco luvs it, and i think price of 569,00€ for only 512GB is kinda dumb and lil' greedy... still very interesting to see how we differently "feel" a price)

I don't think that it's "only" 512GB, it is enough to have bunch of indies, emulation games and couple of big titles installed at all times. Storage is cheap nowadays and for me personally doesn't play any role in purchasing decision since SD cards are a thing and don't affect gaming performance in any way. I would rather buy OLED with 64GB for 450 than this 512GB version for 570. But I understand their decision, they make a profit this way. Oh well, corporations are not our friends or something like that. :))

Jah.

I've got a 1 TB SD Card as well as the base 512GB.

I have personally found that there is no difference between the included storage and the added storage as far as performance goes. Games played include Baldur's Gate 3, Midnight Suns, and A Plague Tale: Requiem.

I can't say I have any issues with game storage either. I've always got between 50 and 80 games downloaded at any given moment. If I was just relying on the base storage after system requirements though, it wouldn't be as effective.

That is a whole another story, 'adjusted' price in combination with other stuff certainly does take away from its appeal.

I want the OLED as I never had something that was OLED and I've heard so many great things about it, but if it's a limited time only it kinda sucks.

I also see it only available in US and Canada, so maybe we'll see a EU one coming later on?

I believe it's only the case and different color that is LE.

The Deck is pretty sweet in general, but I feel like waiting for any potential issues in the wild with the new specs, is a good idea.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

From what I can tell the specs ('that matter') are essentially the same. Same APU (smaller architecture), just bigger battery, larger screen (but same resolution), and larger storage. Also some other tidbits like they updated the light sensor to a better version, (so maybe the auto-brightness will actually work :P).

Obviously you never know and it's definitely better to see some reviews, but I don't expect anything to be wildly wrong. And for some reason I still trust Valve to be better with testing/ QC before they release a product rather than just having the end users do the testing.

Although I don't even know why I follow deck news so closely, I live in a country where even the initial LCD variants are still not yet available officially...

I paid $819 plus tax Can for my 512GB ver back in Aug 2022. The new one is better as expected. On the other hand, I've had no issues with mine. Screen is great. Battery last just fine and it just works. I have at 1TB SD card and can play off it or the internal 512GB just fine. If I don't like the default of a game and it can't remap then Steam input can always do anything you want as far as controls.

I had intended to put windows on it and play around but I've never had the need. For the mostly Indi games I play on it. I just left it stock and have had no issues getting anything working. Just click install and then play.

Sure I'd like the new one. But I have no issues with mine so I'll see in a couple years what the next version or two bring. :)

I'd like a deck as a curiosity mostly, as it seems fun and would help with development for deck, but it's not high up in priorities mostly because in my country it's available through a 3rd party store (not sure if that's even supported by Valve or they buy them in EU/somewhere and resell) for 500+ euros for the basic model... or through personal resellers on ads... which is like... no warranty... huge amount of money.... no thanks. Not yet. Maybe one day if things change.

If it ever becomes available world wide for the same price I'd probably buy one, it is a good price for a PC with those specs and it's by far the cheapest handheld gaming PC in the market. But the Steam controller never released in my region so I'm not all that hopeful, I remember being so jealous when those went on liquidation sale for cheap but if I wanted to buy one I had to pay an insane markup from a reseller plus shipping half across the world.

aspect ratio 16:9 on a tv screen

on the steam deck playing on medium with 30fps in game and 20 fps on deck
you get about 3 hours of gameplay before the battery dies

That's pretty impressive for the Piledriver architecture, but then again you have the top notch one from some years ago. I kinda feel bad for getting rid of the A10 7800 I had but I never got those numbers with Killing Floor 2 or The Evil Within @720p with the integrated. Adding a Radeon 7850 with only 1GB helped the CPU a lot. But all that is lost like tears in the rain xD

Don't know about those games since I have only played Nintendo exclusives, no need for other stuff since they are available natively on PC. They play like a charm on lower-end PC's also since CEMU is such a good emulator. And let's not forget Dolphin for some older stuff.

The Steam Deck APU is nice for a handheld, but it's very weak. It generally sits between a 1050 and a 1050Ti, which is equivalent in performance to a GTX 670. 10 years old GTX780 Ti or Radeon 290X greatly outperform it.

New folk should definitely go for the OLED Deck, but as an owner of a regular one, it's too irrational to spend 569€ just for an OLED screen, even if that includes more brightness, higher refresh rate, and more battery. I'll wait for a Steam Deck 2 or something

It's shitty that cheapest one will still be the same old model with just more storage. I will think about upgrading if I can sell my Deck for decent price. Since it is not officially available in my country maybe I can get away with charging extra. :P

It makes its sense as the OLED screen, design changes, and hardware upgrades (faster RAM, 6 mm APU, updated Wi-Fi/Bluetooth module, etc.) all mean extra cost.

But I'm afraid the price difference of 150€ means no one will buy the cheaper edition.

+1 I can sell my old one around its refurbished price that's 379€. The top OLED is 679€. That's a 300€ difference basically for a fancy new screen... I'll wait for a steam deck 2 or a bigger revision too

Permalink

Why would you compare it to top OLED and not the middle one in the first place.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

because I bought the top one in the first place so I would buy the top one again. It retains its value more. But if I compare it to the lesser oled, that's still a 190€ difference. But a decent new 1TB m.2 2230 nvme ssd is around 90€, so the 1TB is a worthy upgrade compared to the lesser oled version.

OLED would be cool. But the reason for getting the steamdeck was the price for me. I got the cheapest one and added 512 GB card. Has been brilliant combination and has enabled me the chance to play more than previously. So while OLED would be cool, I dont think Id be up to paying 569EUR for that.

Also I am a bit cross with Steam for still offering 1.5m charging cable for the cheap edition and 2.5m for the mid and high tier. I don't particularly have anything against having bigger battery or better screen for costlier editions, since those actually increase the cost to build - but cable? Really? That starts to go into the scummy business practice which Apple and similar companies perform. And it sucks to see Valve going down that road.

Been using my Deck for almost a year and was happy with it. My only major gripe with this original model was it's screen, which is borderline bad, in my opinion, so I've decided already that I'll be upgrading to this new OLED revision. Was initially thinking about going with 512GB option as it is the one I have right now and it always was quite enough of storage space + I'm not sure if anti-glare coating on an OLED is such a great idea, but updated two-pieces case have sold me on 1TB option. Especially because I can always use glossy screen protector if I don't like matte finish very much
