And the remaining LCD Decks are on permanent price reduction until stock is gone as well. As are the Docks apparently.

I wonder if the Lenovo Legion Go release forced Valve to make a move with the OLED before they were ready for a full Deck 2 release.
The battery seems to be the usual issue but the screen is a big sales point on the Legion Go

Legion Go just released recently, so Valve decision have nothing to do with it certainly, it takes a lot of time to implement all hardware changes however small they might be and test it properly. Its big screen looks great, but WQXGA resolution is wasteful on a handheld because of performance and battery drain.

I don't think it has anything to do with the Legion Go, which was announced mere 2.5 months ago. For starters, screen quality was one of the most criticized aspect of the original model and its replacement with an OLED was always a clear upgrade path. Gamers Nexus' Steve in his recent video about Steam Deck discusses the differences between LCD and OLED models, of which there are plenty, as Valve has completely reworked the internals of the device, per Steve's claim. One thing that was brough up was that developers at Valve has spent 2 whole months just on the retracing RAM circuits within the board, which already does not really fit into timeframe, because we also need to factor for the time it would take to push the "final" variant into production. There's no way that all this planning, designing, development and production was done in just 2 months.

Also not really sure what is meant by "before they were ready for a full Deck 2 release", because Valve has repeatedly stated that we can expect Steam Deck 2 once there's enough of the performance boost that can be expected from these APUs. Digital Foundry's Richard Leadbetter in the most recent DF Direct also discusses what might be considered to be a "generational leap" in the handheld space by Valve - yes ROG Ally and Legion Go are fasted but at much higher TDP too - so we're clearly not quite there yet for this new "Steam Deck 2", or whatever it will be called.

I traveled a lot this year, so last December would have been the perfect time to buy a Deck.

I've been thinking about it all year, but have not gotten one yet. I guess maybe this is a sign that waiting was the right decision.

Still not sure if I will buy one. It's expensive and it's not like I need one. It would just be an extra fun thing.

I will soon go to Slovenia on a working visa for 1 year, so I will be away from home for that much. In my case I really need one, I would go mad if I didn't play anything for that long. Ofc I don't need new OLED model, but it is tempting me too much. My thoughts are if I get it immediately and sell my old one, I will get some value out of it since proper Deck 2 won't be released for at least 3 years in my opinion. They kinda missed the opportunity to implement Hall Effect sticks, it would be nice addition.

Yes, being away from home for 1 year is a good reason to buy one! The longest I am typically away from home is 1 week.

How will you sell the old one? Online? Or are there any stores that would buy it from you?

Definitely online. Deck isn't even available in my country and on our biggest shop where regular users are selling all you can think of, the cheapest 64GB version which is 420€ regularly from Valve is priced at 490. Recently a computer firm added it to its offering with a spectacular price of 560€. Because of all that I'm hoping I will get a decent price for it if I decided to sell.

If you don't want to pay too much, don't necessarily need the last product and don't mind second hand, the 512Gb (Valve Certified Refurbished) is at 380€ : https://store.steampowered.com/sale/steamdeckrefurbished

You can also get one unused for 469€ : https://store.steampowered.com/steamdeck (scroll down after the limited edition animated picture).
Or simply buy a 256GB LCD.
I don't advice the 64GB, except if you intend to replace the SSD but not sure it's worth the price.

I'm not sure why this is such a surprise since most of the people here knew they were gonna do upgrades. Maybe the surprise is how fast It was and the devaluation of the first gen. They could have sold the first gen as a prototype product at higher price and very límited numbers and then sell the OLED version. Nintendo did the same isnt It? It just feels like the taunt the market and "obligate" you to upgrade.
As long as there's money I guess It's worth It.

I don't understand this post at all. "They could have sold the first gen as a prototype product at higher price and very límited numbers and then sell the OLED version". What does this even means?

It means you could have a collectors item, a 1 of X numbers ítem, they could have add something that would stand from the new OLED version so It's value won't decrease.

Dreadful fans were the reason I cancelled my preorder last time, see if they've fixed that I guess. The bump to 1tb is a bonus too I guess cause paying £100 premium for a bit of glass and a fucking emoji bundle felt a touch steep.

It's still expensive for what you get, considering it's using an APU that's outdated by a year and you can get similarly priced Windows handhelds that are much more powerful. But I didn't have the fan issue with my original steamdeck. The fan noise was more of a lottery thing, mine is quiet.

As UK prices go it feels pretty fairly priced tbh, esoecially if you value the much more polished UI, but you're right that chip will probably be chugging and begging for an upgrade by the time the next gen of these things appear. Lenovo seems like it could be a beast but I'd wanna wait a gen and make sure they actually support it (unlike their laptops), see how the controller gimmick works out, etc, particularly cause the Windows options so far have been kinda clunky messes.

That said all I really wanna do is play FM/Eve laying on a sofa instead of in an office chair so probably not the most demanding of customers.

I'd give it another 2-3 months to see if the legion go gets enough polish. It took a few months for the ROG Ally to be a smooth experience (outside of the SD card defect). Seems to be the pattern with these handhelds.
