I generally only thank when I've won, or if the game is super awesome and I really appreciate just the chance (even if it's 1 in 1000) of maybe winning it. I also like to thank whitelist-only GA's when there's an implicit request for interaction -- also, the GA basically becomes a mini-chatroom where everyone can hang out and get to know each other!

Mini-chatrooms do sound fun, though I probably already spend too much of my time talking to people. I spend a lot of time in the house, so any social interaction is a good one! Thanks for the advice :)

My opinion only. Do what feels right to you:
Welcome to Steamgifts!

I agree with this, I think it's sad that people don't say thank you!
Sounds good. Though I am confused in general of how 'train' giveaways work...
Thank you for your welcome and your advice, happy to be here!

Take a look at any of these posts. Somebody creates a post in a forum with a link to an invite-only (private) giveaway. That giveaway contains a link to another giveaway, and so on and so on. :D

Ahhhh, that's pretty trippy. Not sure my brain could follow that. One day soon I'll tackle one and see if it's something I could do!

There are tools that help make them pseudo-automatically, though I've never used one myself.

That makes sense as a good way to avoid accidentally spamming someone, something I've probably done, whoops.

I'd be grateful for all three of them, of course. But a puppy is the obvious answer.
Of course, bot would know that! <.<

Reaction time is a factor in this, so please pay attention. Now, answer as quickly as you can. They're just questions, Wonderwhatif. They're written down for me. It's a test, designed to provoke an emotional response.
It’s your birthday. Someone gives you a calfskin wallet. How do you react?
You've got a little boy. He shows you his butterfly collection plus the killing jar. What do you do?
You're in a desert walking along in the sand when all of the sudden you look down, and you see a tortoise, Wonderwhatif, it's crawling toward you. You reach down, you flip the tortoise over on its back, Wonderwhatif. The tortoise lays on its back, its belly baking in the hot sun, beating its legs trying to turn itself over, but it can't, not without your help. But you're not helping. Why is that, Wonderwhatif?

If you didn't even want to own the trash game, then why did you enter the GA? o.O
Comment has been collapsed.
Understood-- perfectly within the rules. But just consider that maybe the game you win that you don't even want is something that somebody else might really want. *shrug*

Haha, I'm not Canadian, but I live here :P Don't worry, I don't take offence, I mean it's better to have a nice stereotype than a mean one, right?!
Comment has been collapsed.
if you're posting the same message in every GA, you will either look like a bot or a spammer. saying "Thanks hope to win it warthog hvala puno thanks for putting this up have a nice week and weekend and have some peace too! ^^" in every giveaway kinda loses the meaning of being thankful.
this is what many people don't get when they are told to stop spamming, so they reply "so it's better if i silently enter everything!" 🤦♀️
just find a middle ground. post different comments, don't reply to all GAs you enter (read what the GA says, many ask you don't reply at all), and maybe you can even post a gif or emoticon instead of "thanks".

Balance is definitely the right way forward! Thanks to all the advice here, I think I'm ready and set to go. I never wrote the exact same comment like I saw some do, but I can see that a lot of times a comment isn't even really required and could really clog up somebody's inbox.
Thanks!

Honestly, I'll probably start saying thanks to any giveaway I win now (Cause I didn't consider this) but I don't blacklist thankers cause I don't see that as a real problem. I also haven't made very many low level giveaways in long time, and the only one I did is so I can fill up my blacklist with 100 people with ratios like 100 won with 0 given or people that don't deliver there games just because I was bored :P (It was no value and free at that point) Antibot measures can be SGtools, high levels, invite only, group/whitelist, puzzles or link modifications <3

Thank you!
Yeah, I think it's probably better to thank when you win, rather than not, as I wouldn't want to make somebody feel unappreciated! People who give away something just to make somebody else smile are great, but a thank you never hurt anybody...I mean, unless it's sarcastic!
It definitely annoys me a little to see accounts that win, but never give anything. I'm out of work and I'd still feel like I wanted to give something small back to the community, so hearing you blacklist people like that makes me laugh a little evil laugh!
Comment has been collapsed.
Yeah, it makes me have that laugh too. Especially when I see a 0 sent 100+ won with 5x the years that I do.

I'm going to be blunt (not sure why I announced that, I'm always blunt) -
Anyone who gets bent over someone saying "thank you" needs to get a grip. That's quite literally the last thing I would ever blacklist someone for (nor do I blacklist for not saying thanks.) Post unique messages and don't spam the same giveaway creator over and over, and you won't have any issues. In other words, just be genuine. Having said that, there are people who don't like comments in their giveaways, but they'll tell you as much. Respect their wishes.
People will go around screaming "bot!" for any old reason around here. As long as you're not using a bot, that's their baggage. Don't let them make it yours. You do whatever makes you feel comfortable.
Comment has been collapsed.
Well, we don't know each other that well, so a preface is always handy! Actually, I love to use all sorts of leading phrases, so bottom line is I don't mind you announcing your bluntness :P
I think, from what I'm seeing, a lot of people use blacklist just to weed out who they don't like, but it was more intended to remove bots or people who were being aggressive maybe. I'm probably only going to use the blacklist feature like how I would use 'block' on twitter, when someone really goes way too far.
I was pretty concerned about the whole bot thing, but everybody here has done such a good job putting my mind at ease and helping me see both sides of the 'comment or not' issue so that I can find my own balance.
TBH, I'm not tech-savvy enough to use a bot, even if I wanted to and I really don't. Cheating leaves a bad taste in my mouth in general!
Comment has been collapsed.
Why thank you! You're on my whitelist as well. I'm a reviewer in my spare time as well and...let's just say I see a lot of abuse of systems that are supposed to help people going on. I've tried hard over my life not to be judgemental and to give people a chance, but cheating competitions or selling reviews are two things I really can't get behind!

Thank you for your reply, my fine friend. How are you on this sun-dappled day on our planet full of other humans; Earth?
Comment has been collapsed.
It's really gone back and forth over the years - sometimes you're a bot if you say thanks, sometimes you're a bot if you don't say thanks. One guy considered you a bot if you didn't specifically post in a green font. My general rule these days is to look at the description - if the gifter posts something that asks for or by default invites a response (like a "good luck" message), then I'll say something or give a quick thanks. If they request no posts, or if they don't write anything, then I assume they don't want to hear anything unless I win the GA.
Comment has been collapsed.
That's a pretty good system. I write stuff in the description when I'm particularly looking to evoke conversation or don't mind a friendly hello
Of course.....I never really mind a friendly hello, I'm pretty laissez-faire.

It's up to you if you want to do that but you will have some who don't mind it and some who don't like it. I personally say thanks mostly when I win a GA. There are times I'll say it before the GA ends but normally it's more than just a thank you and includes why I'm saying it. For example if it's a wishlist game or someone is doing a whitelist giveaway I really like.
Comment has been collapsed.
I still find myself having to restrain from saying thanks, but I think this is definitely the best way to do it. Since I got all the advice though, I keep seeing giveaways with no thanks and end up putting a nice comment anyway. Whoops. ^_^

Having made a few giveaways, my opinion is that if you win someone's game whether its $1 or $100, a thank you is nearly always appreciated. Personalise the message however you want, some use gifs or a smiley face (whatever you like). As others have stated, not thanking someone for winning a game that most likely people have spent money on, makes the giveaway creator feel unappreciated. Follow the instructions that the giveaway creator has written in the description and you cant really go wrong. The only time I don't leave a message on a gift I've won is if I have won like multiple games from them in quick succession but I will make it clear that I thank them for all the games I won in one message.
With regards to bots winning giveaways, cg has managed to ban quite a few of the bots although I am sure there are still some out there which have manged to evade the net. Unfortunately if they win a game, unless you are certain and can prove they are a bot, you should still give them the game. Otherwise, they can mark the game as not received and you'll get a mark next to your giveaways.
TLDR: Use some common sense and you will be just fine.
Welcome to SG from a Londoner.
Keep up the good work with the giveaways :-)

I definitely agree with this. I think in all my giveaways I've had very little thanks after a win, so I can only imagine what it's like to give a full price game and not get thanks! When that happens I guess I would just hope the person enjoyed it anyway, I guess.
Thanks for the welcome and the kind advice! ^_^

You're not a bot, you're an awesome knight ! (and I'm not biased at all ^^)

NANI!? I guess I should probably change my picture to something more unique, but...I do love the pink knight. :P

I used to thank for every entry but I picked up a heap of blacklists for it lol Now I only thank if there are a heap of entries in something I've entered and no-one else has thanked, really special games, and whitelist/group GAs.
Comment has been collapsed.
You're in the same boat as the OP -- people blacklisting you are going to be more affected than you are. They're going to miss all your giveaways, while you probably won't miss much. (Your giveaway rate is much higher than normal).
Plus, you might get added to some whitelists...
Comment has been collapsed.
Yeah, it's definitely a beginner's mistake that's for sure! Oh well, we live and learn. I've added you to my whitelist anyway, so one more to tip the balance! Thanks for the advice.
Comment has been collapsed.
That's a really sweet gesture! I definitely think my comment style will be similar, but I will comment if there's no comments there, lately I've been seeing a lot of giveaways with no comment (no request to not be commented) so I always want to leave the person a nice comment in that case. If they blacklist me, I'm not too worried, I think that's pretty much beyond our control!
Comment has been collapsed.
I think the general consensus for SG is that people want you to thank them when you win the game, but not when you are entering. It took me a while to adjust to that also, because I want to thank the person just for the chance. Of course everyone is different too.
My personal rule is that if it's a group or a whitelist giveaway then I will thank them for the chance. If it's a thread giveaway then I will bump there thread. If I win a giveaway I will always thank the giveaway creator.

It was definitely a surprise! Not to be nerdy, but from like...a human observing point of view, it's actually really interesting whenever you join something new or go somewhere new; everywhere has it's own little systems and quirks that you have to learn.

You've probably gotten so many answers by now, and I think you've pretty much gotten a good view on how people feel about 'thanks' comments, so I'm not going into detail any further. Just dropping by to say this thread made me smile. You seem like a nice person. Hope you have a nice day. :) ((I know this was very random, but I just wanted to thank you because the comments made my day a bit better.))

Absolutely, so many helpful people here!
Wow, I'm glad this thread made you smile! No need to worry about random, I mean your comment made me smile :) Hope your day is a great one. My fave thing about this thread so far, is it's given me an excuse to bust out a lot of cool robot gifs!

Wow, thank you so much! I've added you to mine as well. Gosh, everyone here is so friendly...now I sound like I'm from Archie comics.

So I just read some threads on bots and apparently thanking for every giveaway is a sign you're a bot...I do this because I thought it was polite, should I stop?
Also is there anyway to be sure a bot has not won my giveaway, keep in mind I am not super savvy about this kind of stuff and medical issues makes my brain slow, so dumb it down if you need to.
Thanks all!
