As of now, the 2 main resons to give a gift on the site is:

  1. The warm fuzzy feeling of giving.
  2. the small amount of points that everyone gets when a new giveaway is made.

I think it would be cool if like, every gift worth 10 points or more gives half the point value BACK to the gifter (rounded to the nearest 5) if they recieve positive feedback for gifting the game.

EXAMPLE:

Someone gifts the game Portal, (currently worth 10 points) after the giveaway has finished, the gifter recieves positive feedback from the giftee, so the gifter gets 5 points.

ALTERNATE EXAMPLE:

Same as above, but the gift is never sent, therefore the gifter gets NO extra points (or even LOSES points, to keep fake giveaways from happening) AND they get the negative feedback.

I think this could be a nice way of encouraging gifting, while keeping people from being stupid and making fake giveaways.

Any thoughts?

I think this is an interesting way to give a (small) reward to a gifter for his/her generosity. There would have to be a watch against 50P keys for demo.

Nope,

if it was purely cosmetic, yes.

This pretty much equates to buying points, and then needing to "pay to win".

hehe, yes, Hats over your profile avatar. Goofy hats. Special Badges/Icons for your profile page, on the forums, and maybe even the giveaways that you create.

It's been scientifically proven that hats make everything better.

The problem i have with your idea is that there will be even more fakes since people will try to gain points themselves. No, i know that you only get them if oyu get positive feedback but not everybody will realize that.

Radnom idea: Maybe we should have titles displayed next to your name.
for every gift you give you go up one level and get a newer (cooler) name.
If you reach ten you get to chose your title and make it super epic.
If course you only go up if the giftee gives positive feedback.

There needs to be some reward for gifting or people will eventually stop. I have gifted but I'm losing faith in this site as it's almost impossible to win anything. The ratio of entries to gifts available is way out of proportion.

The majority of gifts are just extra copies of portal etc. that people have accumulated over time. These will eventually run out and then you will only see $1-$5 games with the occasional big release.

I completely disagree. This site is based on the generosity of a handful of individuals as well as, to a lesser extent, a larger number. Most of the more well-known gifters will tell you that they aren't giving games to get rewarded for it, but instead to simply give selflessly to this community. The gifting won't stop, especially due to how Steam works. Games will go on sale and people will buy a copy or two to gift later.
In my opinion, gifters don't need to be compensated. If they were, it wouldn't be gifting, would it? It would be trading.

Oh, also, this topic has already been discussed quite a few times. Just sayin'.

Just because you are rewarded more points doesn't mean that you would win any extra, so it would still be considered gifting. In my opinion, it would be better for everyone as people would feel even more generous with their giving.

This model is not sustainable over the long run. Eventually there will be too many takers and not enough givers. In the month I've been a member the ratio has already gone out of whack.

Oh, also, just because others have discussed this topic, does that mean I shouldn't state my opinion?

By no means am I saying that you shouldn't share your opinion. Sorry if I came off that way. I'm just saying that I disagree when you say that the model is not sustainable. Though it is true that more "takers" are popping up a hell of a lot faster than the givers, I simply can't see the givers stopping anytime soon. Especially since I speak with many of them on a daily basis.
I guess I could compromise and agree that purely cosmetic rewards, as mentioned above, could be an interesting course of action.

When you signed up, there was never any guarantee that you would get any free games. You also joined under the pretenses that any gifts that you gave, were solely given out of the goodness of your heart.

It may seem impossible to win prizes because there is such a large volume of users on the site. If you're "losing faith", sweet, then leave. That'd be more of a chance for other users, who might be more grateful, to win something.

Little tiny medals for amounts gifted...say, 15$, 25$, 50$ and so on. Something huge, too, since GlaPos would hit it right out of the gate. And they aren't "awarded" until after the feedback is scored.

I think all submited giveaways points should go to the gifter.
