can the giveaway game be anything or what does it need to be? i'd love to add some giveaways

It can be anything. If you are interested in the contributor role, I'll send you a Group invite tomorrow!

thanks quick question does it need to have multiply copies? would it be better to send you a list and you pick? i can't afford it to be the latest and greatest games but as with my giveaways i try to make some nice giveaways, thanks

Hello!
Sorry for the late reply. Now I am finally able to answer questions.
About your question: No, we won't do multiple copies for "Review Games". 1 copy -> 1 winner -> 1 review.
We might do multiple copies for the "Game Giveaway" section in the magazine. When the magazine will be published and available for everyone to read, the readers will find a game giveaway link that they can enter.
And don't worry about contributing with expensive games. Any game is welcomed, but you'll have to ask for permission directly through Steam chat (messaging me) or via the Steam Group Page, where you can open a "request topic".

A good magazine needs a proper grammar Naz... I mean, a good editor.

I could use your help, for sure!
Do you have any experience moderating a Steam Group page as well? Or interest?
Edit: Sent you a friend request, in case you still want to take the editor job :)

I would be interested in joining as an editor. I teach English, and I could both proofread someone's review and give the reviewer the "why's" for the corrections. Let me know if that role would have value to the group.
No, I don't have experience moderating a Steam Group page, but I would support with proofreading.

I'd love to have you as contributor. After I finish setting up the Group Page I'll send you an invite.
edit: Sent friend request!

Even though many things going on in my life currently, this is exciting and I'd like to be a part of reviewers. I think I can also be helpful about general design format of the magazine, though I haven't worked on EPUBs before too but that can be learned. At least we can try and see which format would fit the best.
Comment has been collapsed.
I'd actually love to have you as a permanent member of the team, Mitsukuni.
Do you have any experience in moderating a Steam Group page?
Comment has been collapsed.
Thank you, I feel honored that you think like that.
I do not have any forum moderator experience though I worked as a design team member for some forums in the past (Not Steam forums). So to say, I'm more of a back-end worker in that matter. I can be there to tidy-up here and there perhaps but that would be all to be honest. Though I really don't know what kind of job Steam moderators do. I'm already picky about being a member of a group, not sure about what to say to being a moderator. If you think I would be helpful as a moderator I would like to help, but I'd advise to not expect standard moderator worktime from me. I used "worktime" as a chosen word there but I meant something casual and couldn't find a better word as a translation from my native language.

Hey, this seems like a great idea and I'm interested in becoming a Full Member, though I would probably share more than enter.
I also have some feedback and questions regarding the rules & format.
Smaller indie titles, sport games, racing games or simulators are not mandatory to be finished.
This makes sense for sports, racing, sims but I do think there should be a minimum amount of time invested. Also I think indie titles should be finished. Maybe you could take some ideas from the Playing Appreciated group FAQ
b) In case you enter multiple giveaways and win 2 or more games, you’ll have to pick ONE and leave the rest to the other members. Allowing SG to reroll another winner. It is HIGHLY recommended that you enter only the giveaway with the game you actually want to play.
The only one win part makes sense, but with most groups there's going to be more people entering than giveaways available. I think you should drop the requirement to only enter one giveaway. Maybe once you win you have to remove all other entries, and reroll if you win 2.
Each review should be at least 1-2 pages long for smaller games, and 2-6 pages for bigger titles. 1 Page is measured in 500 words .
If you look at Steam reviews even a lot of the longer ones are going to be fewer than 500 words. I realize you're going for a magazine format, but I would suggest maybe lowering it a little. 500 words is doable but 1,000 to 3,000 is longer than most high school essays.
b) There is going to be a limit of 2 giveaways per month (for the first few issues) and then, at a later date, the limit is going to be restricted even further to only 1 giveaway per month. The reason for that is that I want multiple members to participate on both sides. As a reviewer and a contributor. And since we can’t have too many giveaways going on at the same time, we need to limit the amount you can contribute.
Is that 2 giveaways per contributor? If it's group total, that wouldn't be very many for people to enter depending on the number of group members. Also I think you have to account that some people are going to win games and not play them, or play and not review. In addition to having guidelines and penalties for those who don't play or review, it would be good to have a few more giveaways + reviews to fill in for those who don't meet their obligations.
Comment has been collapsed.
Hello and thank you for the interest!
To answer some of your concern, I'll start by saying that nothing is 100% decided yet.
That being saying.. the winning/rerolling part is a tricky one. You can't really limit members from entering multiple giveaways. I mean, you can add that as a rule, but I don'' think it would be fair. I am not sure how I am going to approach this issue. I'll have to think of others methods. Maybe something like a maximum of 3 entries available per member would work. And in case they win 2 or even all games, they'd have to drop 2 and keep 1. This way it will prevent some members from entering all giveaways and winning most of them.
As for the words limit. I believe 500 per page is acceptable. I can drop it maybe to 400-450, but no more. As I said, even for bigger titles a minimum of 2 pages and maximum of 6 is acceptable. Nobody is asking to write 6 pages if you don't want or can't. I realize that 6 is pretty much overkill, but I do want to offer the reviewer complete freedom.
There is going to be a 2 giveaway limit per contributor per month. In the first few months. After we reach let's say... issue #3, the limited will be dropped down to 1 giveaway per contributor per month. That's because I ASSUME by the time we reach issue #3, we'll have more members willing to contribute. Everyone should be able to at some point.
Sorry if this is confusing. I'm struggling to write this and not fall asleep at the moment. If you have more questions, I'll try to answer them tomorrow!

Congratulations for this magazine. Looking forward to it.
I would like to participate as a reviewer, but just a comment "Each review should be at least 1-2 pages long for smaller games, and 2-6 pages for bigger titles" how many words are we talking about? I write small reviews for the games I play. I don't mind it to write it longer, of course, but it would be good to know how much we are supposed to write.
Comment has been collapsed.
Hello and thank you!
I'd be more than happy if you joined the reviewers team.
I mentioned it in the post, but here it is: 1 Page is measured in 500 words – font Calibri – size 11
I expect at least that volume of "work" for each title + an additional page for the bigger titles.
If you decide to join, I'll send you a group invite tomorrow after I finish setting up everything :)

Thank you for the incredibly fast answer. I would like to apply for reviewer then.
Just one thing I would like to say: I feel that the normal 10 digits is better for scoring. But of course, whatever you decide.
Comment has been collapsed.
Hi, will like to apply as a reviewer, already do that for another group, here some exemple of a review done recently
Play many differents types of games, but will never play (so no enter into ga) horror, point'n'click, 4X (games like humankind) and simulation / sport games.
Also my opinion about 2 things about ther Rating System :
Edit : After see the playtime for each games required, i have choice myself to leave the group, nothing personnal, but i am 99,9 % sure i will never reached the required playtime withing the 3 weeks.

One problem with the 'current price' metric is the issue of regional pricing, and different currencies. Some games may have wildly different prices depending where you're from. So it would likely either need to be a single region for all reviews. (With the region being stated by the price). Or several regions stated.
Comment has been collapsed.
You're right, I haven't considered the regional pricing. I guess I'll have to find a way around it or drop the idea entirely.

As you know, I have a great interest in this. I would love to join as a reviewer, as I'm not confident in my ability to create monthly giveaways every month (I have other groups that require this already). As for the creation of a Discord server, I have you covered.
Also, as another comment said, maybe there should be some people dedicated to editing once this gets going more. I would be able to do that, but I wouldn't be able to be dedicated to that task.
(P.S. If monthly giveaways aren't required for full members, then I would like to be a full member)

I am at work now, so I don’t really have time to reply to you guys, but I wanted to share 2 changes that I believe are going to be useful:
We’ll make more than 10 giveaways. Let’s say we do 20. Some of them will have a 3 weeks deadline to complete and review, others will have more time (up to 8 weeks depending on the size and length of the game). The 3 weeks ones will be featured in the first issue.
Each member of the Review Team will be able to enter a maximum of 3 giveaways per month (there was no restriction on how many giveaways they could enter before). Also, the previous rule of picking only one game and dropping the others in case of multiple wins remains. I think this change will be beneficial for the overall quality of the magazine. Reviewers will actually have to consider and plan their entries, instead of playing a lottery.
Will talk more and start inviting members to the group later tonight when I get home!
Sadly yesterday I couldn’t set up the Group Page due to multiple errors or I guess server issues.

i have some ideas/points/questions
the first point is that you should allow people to review games they won in the previous months (or last issue) if they win more than one for example if someone won Lego Batman and Fifa in the same issue period one review could be in two different issues if they wanted
the second point is to thank you for leaving out (if that was be design) Visual novels as i feel they require people to go in more or less blind to really enjoy them and the less you know the better you (or at least i) have enjoyed them
The third point is about Store links will the review include a store link as many (including my sons game ball fall) have the same title as other games and sometimes when i make giveaways it is not always easy to find the correct one when posting up the giveaways
The last point for now (i think there might) be use in a small quick review section because there are some lovely games such as arcade ones best on things like Snake or Pacman i fell would be good for review but that many words is going to be hard
Questions
Are or will the reviews need to be positive and will games get a chance to be re-reviewed in later issues by others if it comes up in giveaways again (like maybe 5+ issues away)
How is this going to be delivered i used to get the Bushiroad newsletter e-mailed and loved it - here is the link to check it out - https://en.bushiroad.com/press/newsletter/
i also think maybe including polls and questions to in-gauge the reader would be nice and maybe a letters/e-mail page - (i don't know how far you wanted to go with this idea) but i watch a Youtube channel on gaming called - https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCoIXnB865l9Ex9zs4OIXTdQ
He always has a end part with the results of the latest poll he made and comment of the day , which while i have never (to my knowledge) been picked i always find it nice to here
Thanks and sorry if this is too much or out of line these are just some ideas and suggestions

Hello again!
About your suggestions:
the first point is that you should allow people to review games they won in the previous months (or last issue) if they win more than one for example if someone won Lego Batman and Fifa in the same issue period one review could be in two different issues if they wanted.
Each reviewer will be able to win only 1 game per month, or untill they finish playing/reviewing it.
the second point is to thank you for leaving out (if that was be design) Visual novels as i feel they require people to go in more or less blind to really enjoy them and the less you know the better you (or at least i) have enjoyed them
To be honest, I didn't do it on purpose. Visual novels are a niche genre. I won't forbid them from being reviewed, but I doubt we'll have too many of those.
The third point is about Store links will the review include a store link as many (including my sons game ball fall) have the same title as other games and sometimes when i make giveaways it is not always easy to find the correct one when posting up the giveaways
I am not planing to include store links. Buuuut, all game reviews will have in game screenshots included. So even if a game shares the name with another game, the screenshots will help identify which one is it.
The last point for now (i think there might) be use in a small quick review section because there are some lovely games such as arcade ones best on things like Snake or Pacman i fell would be good for review but that many words is going to be hard
That's actually an awesome idea! A "quickfire reviews" section for smaller games, where we can review 3-4 games on one page. That could work.
About your questions:
Are or will the reviews need to be positive and will games get a chance to be re-reviewed in later issues by others if it comes up in giveaways again (like maybe 5+ issues away)
The reviews don't need to be positive. If a game is bad, it will get a negative review. And no, I don't want to have re-reviews in the Magazine. There are sooo many games available. Why should we repeat reviews?
How is this going to be delivered i used to get the Bushiroad newsletter e-mailed and loved it - here is the link to check it out - https://en.bushiroad.com/press/newsletter/
Great question! It will be posted here, in the [Central Hub]. Each issue will be linked in the main post through a link. You open the link and you'll have the magazine in PDF or some kind of eBook format. Easy to open, easy to download if desired.
i also think maybe including polls and questions to in-gauge the reader would be nice and maybe a letters/e-mail page - (i don't know how far you wanted to go with this idea) but i watch a Youtube channel on gaming called - https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCoIXnB865l9Ex9zs4OIXTdQ
I'll consider that.
Thank you for the suggestions! I'll send you a friend request now and then add you to the Group as a Contributor! :)

I've been thinking about reviewing stuff a bit more seriously lately and this could be a great chance. So I would be happy to be considered as reviewer as well.
As for giveaways I mostly am able to give away some stuff that I get in choice bundles, so I doubt I will be able to really provide any unique giveaways that others couldn't. So I suspect full membership wouldn't be really applicable to me. I mean I would be happy to share something if no one else happens to share that particular game. So then it depends how you plan on organizing the balance between the two groups.
Some reviews I've written on Steam so far - mostly they are shorter since .. well.. I don't see the point in really getting much into detail when most popular ones are one-liner jokes... Only review I've gotten several hundred likes is one sentence about Witcher :D But here at least I know people would actually read the stuff.

I personally am not the fan of regular run of the mill type of reviews that just list arbitrary ratings on every little thing without explanation inserted in some template to just look good. I don't care that graphics are 4/5....... tell me what it means. And if I write an opinion I try to go into detail and summarize it or try to make a comparison. So I hope I would be able to contribute.
Also I am contemplating on getting Steamdeck as well. So if nothing comes in way of unexpected expenses and I do finally get it, I could provide viewpoint from playing on that as well

I'd be more than happy to have you as part of the team.
Also, do you have any experience with Steam Groups? At the moment I am trying to set up the Steam Group page, but nothing works. It's a total mess.
I cannot edit topics I've made.
They automatically got flagged for "containing potentially harmful content and has been hidden as a result".
I cannot resolve the flags.
I am not even able to delete them!
How can I even run this Group if everything is broken.
I tried relogging and even unistalled Steam... same thing happens.
Can't find any info regarding this problem either. It's like I am the only Steam user with these problems.

I believe this is just a normal check for steam. It always applies whenever you edit or post something. Just wait for a few minutes and it will go away. If not, you might want to contact support since they are stuck in the queue.

I don't have much time these days to contribute but I'm looking forward to seeing the result and the reviews. Sounds like a really cool project.
As a suggestion to help first time reviewers or people who don't really know where to start when reviewing a game, maybe a template would help?
I used to volunteer with kids to play games and they were given a basic checklist after playing to help them (and us) determine what kind of games they liked most and what they were into.
Of course they weren't reviewing anything but it really did help them start the conversation about what they liked in a game or didn't.

A template is a good idea, but at the moment I have other priorities. It's a very good suggestion tho and will use it for sure when I get a grip of this whole project.

I've been told that you were part of the "Playing Matters" Group, won a couple of games and never played them. I hope that's not the case here.

From what I can see, I won only Plague there. Skautfold was a giveaway from a different group. The other two I think I won after I left. And I left because I couldn't play Plague in the timeframe the group required due to not having a good GPU anymore, and Skautfold was not on my priority list, so I told the admin I'm leaving, no point in waiting to get removed. I'm probably not gonna be entering many giveaways in the group anyhow, as I already have plenty of stuff on my plate. So, shouldn't be an issue to play a game in 3 weeks and review it if I win.

Hello Soyalp104,
Please be aware that you're currently in violation of the Group Rules.
2) Each Reviewer can enter up to 3 giveaways per giveaway "wave"!
Currently you've entered 8/3 giveaways. Please make sure you read the rules once again and make the proper adjustments in order to give everyone a fair chance at winning and reviewing a game.
also please keep in mind rule 4:
4) In case you use all 3 of your entries and you end up winning more than one game, you'll have to decide which one to keep and then drop the rest. Allowing SG to reroll the winner for the dropped games.
As you entered 3 giveaways with no entries so far, that puts you at 100% of winning all 3 games, with no chance of dropping 2 of them to other members. I advise you to pick only one of those if there are no additional entries.
Thank you for understanding!

It looks interesting, but im not sure im comfortable in giving scores in that many aspects.
I got a question though. What's the difference beteeen reviewers and full members if they all have access to the giveaways? Will there be some giveaways that is accessible for reviewers and everyone (kinda like unlucky7?) And what is the playing/reviewing rules for full members?

Some people want just to review the games, some just to contribute... While others want to do both. For Full Members, both the Reviewer and Contributor rules apply.

Ah, i see. Thanks for the info! I thought it is another role that is different from the other two, hahah. I'm gonna pass then. Good luck with the magazine! :)

Hello and Welcome to the central hub of SteamGifts Magazine!
The SG Community's own digital monthly gaming magazine in which ANYONE can join for a chance to win a game and review it, putting down their thoughts on "digital paper" for the whole community to read! Each submitted review will be published.
Steam Group Rules and Member Roles
Please make sure you have read and understood the rules for each role before requesting to join the Group:
Reviewer - As a reviewer you can enter the Group's giveaways for a chance to win games and review them.
The Rules:
1) Before entering giveaways, make sure you check the deadline assigned to them. Enter only if you truly believe that you can play and review the game in that timeframe. The deadline varies depending on game size and length, from 3 weeks up to a maximum of 8 weeks!
In case you cannot reach the expected deadline, you can request additional days in order to finish. A maximum of 5 additional days can be requested!
Not all games will require completion in order to be reviewed. Sport games, racing games, simulators or other type of "sandbox" games can be reviewed if a minimum required number of hours is met (that number will be decided separately).
Story based games on the hand, need to be finished before submitting the review!
2) Each Reviewer can enter any group giveaway until they win a game. After that point, the Reviewer is forbidden to enter additional giveaways unless they have played, reviewed, and submitted the review from the previously won giveaway.
3) There will be two giveaway 'waves' per month. Each wave will feature up to 15 giveaways.
4) In case you win multiple giveaways, you'll have to pick the game that you want to play and review the most, and then accept to re-roll the other game/s that you've won. This way everyone has a higher winning chance and you will be able to better focus on the review.
5) You’re not a professional game reviewer. We get that. Nobody is asking you to be one, but if you took upon yourself this task, you should at least try your best. We don’t want to stress you about creating the perfect review. But on the other hand, please respect the Magazine and the Group. Each review should be at least 1-2 pages long for smaller games, and 2-6 pages for bigger titles.
One page is measured in 400 words – font Calibri – size 11
Don’t worry if English isn’t your first language. It isn’t for most of us. I will correct mistakes the best I can before publishing it. Editors will help as well.
We also encourage a lighthearted approach in writing the review. Don’t take yourself too serious! Add some personal stories to make the reader feel more empathic towards you, rant about certain aspects of the game if you feel like it, make jokes, damn.. even add memes if you want to. The point is… be original. This is YOUR review. Pretend you’re explaining the game to your childhood's best friend. The reader is that friend :)
6) Do not try to copy/paste reviews from other sources. Stealing from others isn’t cool. And if caught you’ll be blacklisted. We want the authentic YOU!
7) The only “mandatory” review format is the game scoring. At the end of the review, you’ll have to score it accordingly to the magazine’s format.
8) As you play the game, you’ll be required to take and submit at least 5 in game screenshots, with small descriptions on what you were doing or trying to capture. These screenshots will be added in the magazine.
9) Some games might be too difficult to beat. Maybe you're stuck on a level? Or maybe the game is a mess filled with bugs that stops you from finishing it. If that's the case and you REALLY tried your best, but just couldn't move past a certain point, let us know in the Group. We can find a solution together.
10) The usage of any type of AI software or tool to write reviews or paragraphs from the review is strictly forbidden. We have an AI detection tool that we use on each submitted review, and it is highly effective, accurately identifying AI-generated content 9 out of 10 times.
If you are caught with 2 or less AI-generated paragraphs, you will receive a warning and lose your Premium membership (if you have one). If you are caught with more than 2 AI-generated paragraphs, you will be banned.
11) If you win a game, you have 7 days to redeem the key/gift and mark the game as received. Falling to do so will get you blacklisted.
12) Have a positive and friendly attitude.
Contributor – As a contributor you can support the Group with game giveaways (maximum of 4 per month). A game which will be reviewed by the winner and published in the magazine.
The Rules:
1) You’ll have to ask for permission before creating a Group giveaway. Via direct messaging me or requesting it in the dedicated post "Contributor's Dropxbox" in the Group Forum. The reason behind that is mostly because we’ll need to coordinate with the other giveaways. Also, no repeats of previous games.
2) There is going to be a limit of 4 giveaways per month (for the first few issues) and then, at a later date, the limit is going to be restricted to only 2 giveaway per month. The reason for that is because I want multiple members to participate on both sides. As a reviewer and a contributor. And since we can’t have too many giveaways going on at the same time, we need to limit the amount you can contribute.
3) Contributors will have a special "Thank You" section reserved in the magazine..
4) As a contributor you need to accept the fact that there is a small chance that some of your giveaways won't get to 5 entries. That means you will not receive any contributor points on SteamGifts.
5) Have a positive and friendly attitude.
Full Member – As a FM you’ll be able to contribute games for others to participate in, and you will also have access to other members giveaways for the purpose of playing & reviewing them.
Editor - As an editor, your task is to help us "tidy up" the reviews before we publish them in the Magazine. That means correcting any grammar mistakes you can find, making sure that the reviewer's ideas are well translated and interpreted into text. This is a vital role, as it will dictate the overall quality of the reviews and Magazine.
Moderator - Forum moderators will help with certain activities on the Steam Group Page. Making sure everyone is on their best behavior :)
Okay, now onto the Magazine..
Magazine Format
So far, this is very much up for debate. Everything you’ll see listed here are my own suggestions. By the time the magazine will be completed, many things will be changed or entirely new sections will be added.
• TEAM OF THE MONTH section, in which the editors and all reviewers will be listed, alongside their games (and the page # in which the reader can find that specific review).
• GAME GIVEAWAY section for the readers. Each issue will have a page dedicated to a game that is being given away through link invitation. The game will have a small review on it’s own. The giveaway will end on the last day of the month, right before the next issue is published. There might be multiple copies of the game in the same giveaway so more readers get a chance at it.
• SPECIAL section for different kind of articles related to gaming.
• NEWS section for gaming news.
• HANDS-ON REVIEW for games contributed by developers. If any indie game developers want to advertise their game and are looking for a honest review. (This might not be available in the first issue).
• REVIEWS section.
• COVER GAME REVIEW section, is going to be the “big” or “main” review. Which shall be the longest and most detailed (also the bigger game of them all).
• SCREENSHOT OF THE MONTH section, in which ALL SteamGifts members can submit their favourite screenshot from any game. Only 3 will be selected for publication. 3rd place, 2nd place and the winner. (don't know yet where they should submit the photos)
• FREE2PLAY GAME OF THE MONTH section, in which we’ll feature a Steam game that is free to play.
• HYPE section, in which we list a few upcoming releases that we’re hyped for.
• CONTRIBUTOR “Thank You” section in which all members that contributed with games will be mentioned. Each of them having a quote underneath the game they’ve gifted.
• And more… (if you have any suggestion, please share!)
The Rating System
I decided against using a conventional 10 digits or percentage scoring method.
Instead, the rating system for each game will be the following:
Story – Based on overall storyline, sidequests, environment, characters and dialogue.
Graphics – Based on overall graphics capabilities, visual effects and how well they hold up (for older games).
Sound – Based on sound effects, music and voice acting.
Gameplay – Based on gameplay mechanics, fluidity of the game, learning curve and engine stability.
Fun Meter – Based on originality and how much you’ve enjoyed playing it.
For EACH of these categories you need to assign a number of stars.
⭐ - horrible
⭐ ⭐ - poor
⭐ ⭐ ⭐ - good
⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ - very good
⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ - perfect
Besides the star system, we’ll also use a “VERDICT” section in which you can list up to 5 positives and 5 negatives of the game.
In the end, the reviewer will have to choose between “Approved” or “Rejected” on the “Seal of Recommendation”.
