Okey, again me 2 post in 1 hour, and i am sorry but this is more important then last question haha. So i want to buy new Laptop for university:
Lets say not so expensive (and if it is possible do you know any online shop where u can pay monthly / 100-150$ or in total lets say not more then 1500-2000$)
But i want to use it and for IT but and for gaming and graphic design.. i found extra laptop: toshiba qosmio x70-ast3g26 (32GB RAM , 3GB GeForce 770m, i7-4700MQ quad core) - it was on discount 1600$, now its expensive, but lets say something like this monster and cheaper.. if u have any suggestion please help :D it can be and 16 ram..

Get a Clevo/Sager instead. You can get a P650SE for ~$1,359.00 from most US vendors and that's with a 970M, i7-4720HQ, 1 TB HDD and 16 GB RAM. You could reduce the price further if you buy the RAM/HDD separately. For about 300$ more you can get a GTX 980M.

Maxwell brought significant boosts to laptops and is IMO the first generation where laptops could be competitive, with the 980M being somewhere between a desktop 770 and 780 in power (similar to a desktop Radeon 290) , and the 970M being similar to a GTX 680. A single 970M performs better than 2 770M's in SLI.

Here is my warning. Toshiba sucks with gaming laptops. For starters the fans go out really really easily, and second is that Toshiba's have tons of bloatware that is horrible. So your thinking "what if I put vanilla windows?". They only give you drivers under warranty, once your warranty expires you have to pay for some "VIP package", which costs $100 a year.

Now in my personal opinion; you are going way overboard here. It seems to be that you are on quite an (expensive) budget. My recommendation is to stay at around the $1000 range. If you can build a PC for gaming and IT and just use a craptop, then that would be my recommendation. But if not then once again stay around the $1000 range in order to get the best price to performance ratio. My recommendation is the Asus ROG GL551. The laptop has a:
*3.5 GHZ processor

  • Nvidia 860M
*256 GB SSD (keep in the mind this is only storage device, but you can get a 1 TB for an extra ~$150, but if you do it yourself it will be around $80)

17" laptop is an abomination. The point of a laptop is to take it around with you, which is not really possible with 17", cause it doesn't fit in a backpack and weights over 5kg.

BTW: Toshiba sucks for any hardware. To get good hw you need to get something from a business line, e.g. Dell Vostro or Latitude, HP ProBook, Lenovo, etc... They have lower specs and aren't good for new mainstream games, but they will easily last through your whole college education or longer (unless you deliberately break them).

haven't heard of how they installed addwares on their computers before even selling them? thought everyone knew, they stopped doing it just recently because people found out about their little secret, but the thing is that many Lenovo out there still have that addware, check it out there's a bunch of articles about it on the net

Hint: you do not need a beefy GPU for creating graphics. You need quite a lot of ram, and possibly an SSD would be nice, but not a GPU.

As for Lenovo, as other people mentioned - just be sure to install the operating system anew from an official disc, do not use the preinstalled windows.

i heard for Lenovo windows btw i need quite good GPU cause of programming..

Comment has been collapsed.

You do not need a good GPU for programming (unless you are doing OpenCL which is mostly impossible on laptop GPUs anyway).

The only thing that needs a good GPU is games, games, games... Aside form very specific use cases nothing else uses GPU processing (and stuff that does, also aside from very specific cases, does not need anything more powerful than a GF9600).

Case closed, you want to get a machine for games, and a machine for games is a desktop.

Why attend? Are they mandatory? We can always just read them if they're not lab classes or studios with attendance lists. I learned soon enough to skip useless lectures and do side work to cover my bills or learn what's really interesting and useful for later. There's way more to learn than what is offered in class.

Studying IT doesn't mean you need a laptop, neither does going abroad. A tablet would fit for all the needs of note taking and for anything else, a university will have the appropriate equipment.

Would you stop trying to prove something. You can't type on a tablet if you are using it for programming! He is also looking for a gaming laptop as well so this solution is a smarter idea instead having to get 2 things he can combine his need of a computer for school and a laptop for gaming.

So much facepalm. Just so much.
Can you even read? If so, do it. I have already given every explanation why I think a gaming laptop is the worst decision anyone can make, but it's gonna be your problem advising to cut off a limb and go freeclimbing because it's less weight...

What good is a PC only when going abroad?

I was in a similar boat. The reason I opted for a laptop is that I work with some fairly heavy software. Tablets, even the latest and greatest, simply do not have the capacity to do what I need. SQL Server, SSAS, DB2, TM1, all take significant resources to simply work in standby. The software I use to access them also takes a big chunk. Ignoring the RAM requirements, the software also takes a fair amount of space on the hard disk. I've reserved 150GB just for the work area. Normally a PC or a dedicated server would work perfectly, but as I travel around 50%, I need something that allows me to work offline.

TheManiac1987, take a look at this rig: http://www.xidax.com/laptops/xm-9/?saveconfig=29731

If you contact Xidax directly they can up the RAM to 32GB, replace the SSD with a cheaper HDD and you should still be in budget.

Since his requirements aren't exactly known other than "IT stuff duh", I advised on what I had. If he needs to run all of that stuff, he'll surely need a good rig, but does he need that in class or abroad?

If you live anywhere but the US, the UK, Germany, France, Spain, Italy, Scandinavia, Holland then the university's equipment will either be old, poor or simply not enough to cover the needs of every student (at least that's the experience i have from Erasmus from Latvia and Austria).
And as the OP wrote, i would say that tablets are simply not enough in many terms or (like my case) are disturbing (can't stand the finger scrolling!). There is no way to put on the same category a laptop (especially a gaming laptop) with a tablet. You cannot work on a tablet while you can work anywhere on laptop. Moreover, if you stay on the weight, having 4-5 kilos in your backpack when you move with the public transports is no deal. Do consider, also, that investing on a high value laptop will let you rest assure that the laptop will last for a decade.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

a decade

You can't be serious. 5 years tops and it will be so unfit for any but the most basic tasks you'll replace it. The more expensive the hardware is, the faster it degrades in value. Buying high end is just plain stupid.

Yeah that kitty says the truth, buy a Windows Tablet + a decent Gaming PC, which I would do if I had that much money as you to spend, well with that money you can buy a very decent laptop for games(if you don't want tablet) + a very good Gaming PC, no need to throw it all on very expensive gaming laptop. You can even get tablet + laptop + good Gaming PC.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Bit exaggerated, but at least you got the idea. A "gaming laptop" is a bulky, heavy, power-consuming block of overpriced, super-fast degrading electronics with no chance of repairs or replacement after a year or two. A throwaway tablet will do for the course stuff and even programming if you get a keycover, the gaming part will be done on a proper PC that can be upgraded, thus way less degrading in value.

With assumption that you are in staying in campus, and will not play games during classes, I would recommend decent laptop and PC. Keep PC in your room and carry laptop on lectures. It would be cheaper, then "gaming laptop". Any laptop can run compilers, JVM or what ever are you using if you are programmer. If you need it for graphical design, you can do that too on laptop, but any heavy rendering, you should do on PC, regardless of the if you have "gaming" or regular laptop.

From personal experience, one who is doing graduation theses in Computer Science, I really didn't need laptop. And for practice classes we have PC laboratory rooms for that. When I needed PC, I used mine in my room.

Exactly why I recommended to distribute the needs to separate devices. Because "all in one" is either super expensive, a ripoff, or a massive tradeoff in every category.

It dependes where you live, if you are on the US you will have some great deals on the MSI GT70, Asus GJ750 or Lenovo Y50 series. I recommend those 3 series of laptop, obviously the specs varies from time to time but you can find all 3 with GTX 970M or GTX 870M!

You do know mobile graphics cards are bullshit and therefore, using a laptop for gaming is not the best idea, right? A series 7M Nvidia card will never EVER reach the performance of a regular series 7 Nvidia card. Hell, I'm not sure it even reaches the performances of a series 4 card.

I didn't say it's impossible, just don't expect it to do as well as a desktop PC equivalent. I suggest for this purpos to get the laptop with the most powerful dedicated GPU available, an Nvidia 9 series. But, I'm not gonna lie, it won't come cheap.
