As the title says. I'd like you people to tell me wich movies from my favourite genre you like the most and what's so great about them. Always looking for new suggestions and also just like to read some opinions. : )

Based to the theme I made my first ever train on sg. But be careful. This one might travel to nowhere...

Ignore the warning

I loved both Silent Hill movies, because im a bog fan of the games. Also Resident Evil movies, for the same reason.

I really, really liked the first Silent Hill movie wich is by far the best game adaption out there I think. When I watched the second one I was kinda disapointed. Visually it was still made very well but lost the disturbing atmosphere wich the first one had - at least in my opinion.

When it comes to Resident Evil movies I will be honest: I just hate them from the ground of my heart. xD I am a fan of the game series and think the movies are nowhere near the essence of the games. Pure Action fest, charackters diverse from uninteresting to annoying and Alice is just not as cool as the makers would like her to be. Sorry, tastes differs. Not meant in any offensive way.

no offense taken :D tastes are tastes and you have a point, i agree with you, resident evil movies are very action and dont feel like the games.. but i still loved them probably because i like action zombie films and Milla Jovovich :>>>>>>>>

  • John Carpenter's The Thing (1982): A film about isolation and paranoia, can't think of a more appropriate horror film really. Has some of the greatest special effects ever too, the entire cast is brilliant and is amazing at building tension.

  • Alien (1979): Similar in theme to The Thing, in that it's ultimately a film about isolation. If horror is your favourite genre then surely you must have seen this film. It's an absolute classic, just like The Thing.

  • The Fly (1986): A film about Jeff Goldblum becoming a giant fly, what more do you need to know? Has some amazing special effects which hold up so well 30 years later.

  • Return of the Living Dead (1985): One of the best horror comedies out there. Written by the same guy that did Alien.

  • A Tale of Two Sisters (2003): Amazing Korean psychological horror film. Has a unique story, is beautifully shot, has an amazing soundtrack and has some pretty unnerving scenes. Easily one of the best foreign language horror films out there.

  • The Silence of the Lambs (1991): I'm sure you must have seen this. If not, do so immediately. Another horror classic.

  • Rec (2007): Spanish. The only "found footage" film worth watching. Not exactly original in any way, but it's executed very well and is highly enjoyable.

  • The Shining (1980): Stanley Kubrick's shot at horror, and it's almost perfect. Jack Nicholson gives what is probably his best ever performance.

  • I Saw The Devil (2010): Korean serial killer horror film. A bit like Se7en but way more brutal and - at least to me - much more interesting. The two lead actors are fantastic.

  • Videodrome (1983): From the director of The Fly, this is another gory, bizarre film from David Cronenberg. If you enjoy his films, also check out Dead Ringers. It's not a true horror film (has horror elements), but it's one of his greatest films along with The Fly and Videodrome.

  • Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978): Gives off the same vibes as The Thing, with the focus being on the paranoia of not knowing who you can trust. Really great film.

  • The Wicker Man (1973): An awesome British horror film, that is quite unlike any other horror film. Very original and Christopher Lee is great in this.

May I ask when you first watched Poltergeist?

For me it was llast year and I personally have to say it didn't aged well. I'm not blaming the film itself for that but up until today many, many movies were inspired by it and had similar storys. Because of that the film was very forseeable for me. Also the special effects - wich probably where impressive back than - are a bit cheesy if you look at them today.
Guess I've just been years to late. Guess if I had seen Poltergeist when I were younger I'd probably like it way more.

Originally saw Poltergeist in the 80s, it was a lot scarier when it was a new movie which is usually the case for most films of the genre. I'm not the biggest fan of modern cgi so I guess that also adds to why I like the movie(s). I honestly don't think the special effects are bad.

Also not a friend of cgi here. : )
I love the handmade effects like the Nightmare series had it.

Bad may be the wrong word to describe the effects in Poltergeist. But you clearly see that they are coming from a computer. Plus I found the appereances of the paranormal activities lacked some subtility in general. This added together dragged me out of the film experience at those points.

It's not the age alone by the way. I like many movies from that period and even earlier ones quite a lot. But don't wanna make the film bad in any way. Just didn't work too well for me for the mentioned points.

I remember one late evening where I swapped through tv channels and somehow ended up at a broadcast of Nightmare 3. Dunno if you've seen that one.
There's a scene where Freddy holds holds a boy by his sinews and controls him like some puppet. That was the scene I swapped into and I was maybe 6 or 7 years old than. Did me no good. Had problems sleeping for weeks. : (

If we're talking story-wise then the list would be way to long. But if we're only taking into account the actual horror factor then definitely Suspiria.
Cthulhu, that movie was creepy.

Cthulhu (2007)? I still haven't watched it and read mixed reviews :v But if you like Lovecraft (and Lovecraftian atmosphere) I can totally recommend The Call of Cthulhu :3

No, I just have a tendency of saying "Cthulhu" instead of "God". :3 But I agree, that silent movie is fantastic!

Adding to mentioned Noroi, Grave Encounters 1 and As Above So Below (first scary as f-, second and third have great atmosphere of confusion, panic, and hopelessness):

  • Excision, 'cause it's kinda funny gore.
  • Housebound - very well written and well playing with horror cliches.
  • Oculus, because it's American horror where finally someone thinks, draws conlusions and doesn't act irrationally so it's simply nice to watch :o
  • Babadook, but more because it's a great metaphor for depression than as a horror movie.
  • Finnish Sauna - "historical horror" - great, cold atmosphere, kinda slow but bought my heart.

I don't like horror movies because they bore me to death. There was one however that really hit the spot. It's called 1408. Watch the directors cut. Fascinating movie.
