As the title says. I'd like you people to tell me wich movies from my favourite genre you like the most and what's so great about them. Always looking for new suggestions and also just like to read some opinions. : )

Based to the theme I made my first ever train on sg. But be careful. This one might travel to nowhere...

Ignore the warning

Do Gremlins and Evil Dead count as horror movies? Then I'd add them to my list of favorite horror movies! :D

As i tend to have a shitty memory and the only thing to come to my mind is R.E.C i took a peak of my watched movie list.

The Conjuring
The Ring
The Woman in Black
Shutter

Are 4 movies i rated quite high.

Hard to pick just a few when there's so many!
What kind of horror do you like? I mean, it's quite a broad genre after all, some prefer spooky horror (like the grudge or paranormal activity) while others prefer the really gory kind (like the early ittenbach movies), or anything in between, like comedy
I could try to give some recommendations depending on what kind of horror that you prefer though :)

Find that hard to tell. I don't need a horror film to be gory to enjoy it but I can live with it if it makes sense within the context of the story. Also important is that the story and the charackter's actions make sense, at least within the universe of the film. If charackters are acting stupid or the story does not follow it own set rules that is something wich tends to drag me out of the movie experience. Most important and partly caused by the former mentioned is a good fascinating atmosphere.

That said I don't really care about what kind of horror film it is. So I think instead of telling you what kind of horror I prefer it may be more helpful to just give you some examples wich movies I really like. That would be:

  • House of the Devil (probably my favourite)
  • Rec 1&2 (while I think there are not that many good found footage movies out there beside Blairwitch Project, I really liked these two. Managed to feel pretty realistic, despite it's unnatural elements)
  • The Tenant (more a psycholigal story than a horror film. But very disturbing and frightening)
  • Nightmare on Elm Street (just a great idea for a killer. In the end noone can escape the need to sleep)
  • The Descent
  • Ju-On 1&2 (the japanese one's, not the american remakes)
  • Paranormal Activity
  • Shawn of the Dead (one of my alltime favourites but I'd say it is an exception as I think the mix of horror and comedy is very hard to create.)
  • Posession (french/german arthouse drama with surrealistic elements where I still don't think I understood everything what happened. But surely one of the most disturbing movies I've ever seen)
  • Funny Games

Aah, alright! So less gore and more story then. Hmm.. Well, Omen, Hellraiser, the Texas Chainsaw Massacre and The Ring are obvious recommendations considering your exemples, but since they are classics you've probably seen them all already.
Wrong Turn and The Hills Have Eyes might fit you as well, but I'm not as sure about that.

There's always the rest of the Ju-On movies as well, if you haven't seen them, like Ju-On the Curse 1+2 and the last 2 that came out (ignore Black Ghost and White Ghost unless you really love the series, those aren't as good as Ju-On the Curse 1+2 or Ju-On the Grudge 1+2, and of course I'm only refering to the Japanese versions when talking about Ju-On*) and, yeah, Ju-Rei: The Uncanny, another Japanese ghost horror.
House on Haunted Hill (1999) and The Haunting (1999), two ghost house kind of horror movies that I think you might like as well.

I'll refrain from recommending any mix between horror and comedy since the only ones I know that are like that would be the kind that doesn't make that much sense, like Evil Dead or any of the Japanese splatter that came out the last decade.

But hmm... what else..
Sorry, but right now I can't come up with anything else that might fit you.
And sorry for not really coming up with much to recommend. :l

I stronglt recommend a movie called "The Skeleton Key".

I'm not usually big on horror movies, but it's one of my favorite movies, very clever and well made with a superb ending!

That one and "Demonic" where some really surprising horror movies, I wasn't expecting anything from them and they manage to surprise me, good acting and a well constructed plot.

I really liked House On Haunted Hill (1959)
It's in black and white and it makes it even scarier.

Jacob's Ladder
Session 9
Well technically they are psychological thrillers with horror elements. But I recommend them if you like Silent Hill, because they both had great influence on the franchise.

Oh yea how could I forget Jacob's Ladder. It's among my favourites. And yes I really like the Silent Hill game series.

Haven't heard of Season 9 but alone the fact that it also influenced Silent Hill makes it interesting for me. Thank you. : )

I like those horror movies which more about the atmosphere than jumpscare. Some of my favourite are The Conjuring, The Awakening, Woman in Black, and The Orphanage.

Wish to find more though :)

I remember the Texas Chainsaw Massacre remake being the first horror movie that got me genuinely scared. But I was pretty young back then, maybe that's why. Otherwise I'm not a huge fan of horror movies because it's almost always cliché stuff. I remember Inside being really good tho!

Oh and Silent HIll was really good as a videogame adaptation, probably could add that to the list along with Jeepers Creepers which I liked a lot.
