Interesting thought...but there's already a level system. What would you add? Achievements for first and N number of non-bundled GAs? Public vs. invite-only?
I can think of a few things, but I'm wondering how creative we could really get with such a system. What are your ideas?

Gamers enjoy unlocking achievements and sometimes those are really cool! So, some fun badges for making GA or saying "thank" in GA, I don´t know, There are a lots of thing to make achievements. I really like this web and it comunity. I´ll enjoy unlocking Achievements here!

Ah yes, I once explored that concept of SG achievements and made a Google spreadsheet open to edit to all... I'm getting PTSD just thinking about it. :P
I later changed that to a private group with a spreadsheet. It was a fun novelty idea for a couple of weeks, then it died, and you just reminded me it ever existed. Just closed the thread to prevent necro-ing, so here's the link if you're curious.

I had typed up a comment earlier about the group, but decided not to post and have someone bug ya about it. Figured the group must have been dead.

Yeah, the thread's been closed now so we're safe from that, but even so it wouldn't have been a bother (I usually close my threads if someone necro them and it's no longer relevant anyways).

Heh, I remember that well. I participated for a while. I think it jumped the shark when it people could add their own achievements, and predictably, people added obscure achievements that they had achieved so they could increase their achievement completion and move up the rankings. It was fun for a while, so thanks! And sorry about the PTSD. I hope the twitching has at least subsided.

Only I had the ability to add achievements, if I recall correctly - maybe I took suggestions for a while though? I don't recall much, honestly. :P

If I'm remembering right, someone made a script extension that added achievements to SG years ago. Included achievements for things like participating in community events.
It's a neat idea, but not something I'd really want as an official part of the site.

Participation trophies, like "Contributed to community train 3.0", or "Gave away a game in 2019" could be neat - some kind of digital memento of past community events, but probably not a thing anybody actually needs.
+1 to "neat idea, but I don't really want it".

Agreed.

Exactly! Each and every one of them is an achievement :D

I´d like that, as long as its purely cosmetic and not connected to the point- or cv-system or anything.

I know I'm in a minority but don't like achievements on Steam so I wouldn't like them on here. When I can choose to play a game with achievements or without them, I prefer the latter. Actually, if a game has no achievements it shines for me, like for others games with them :D
Oh well xD

That's interesting. Mind elaborating on why you feel that way?
I don't care for/like achievement hunting, but I just typically ignore them, so I'm curious to hear why you actively try to avoid games with achievements altogether. Is it because you feel a sense of failure when faced with achievements unless you hunt them all?

Thanks for asking :)
It's not the feel of failure, rather of incompleteness? Not sure. I have games in Finished category without all the achievements so I can ignore them, not a huge problem. But when I know that I can do an achievement but, for example I would need to finish the game again, then it's kind of... meh? for me. When the game is something I like, I will do it again (like in some Artifex Mundi games, you don't have to do hidden object scenes but a mahjong solitaire or some such but you need to do all of one and then all of the other to get all the achievements). I like HOGs for the art, that is usually pretty or simply beautiful so revisiting locations can be a pleasure. But still, I do it for completeness and not because I would do it anyway. I am not sure if I expressed myself clearly. I don't feel like I wasted my time doing it again this way. But the pleasure is after I get it done, not during the process. When there is an achievement for getting DLCs or some silly stuff I rather not do, I skip it.
I am not a person very active in social media so all this additions to Steam feel a little forced for me, but I just set my profile to private and am done with it. I am not postulating getting rid of that part of Steam or achievements altogether but when I can speak up, like here - I do :)
Have some kitties for this rantish post :D

Interesting, thanks for taking the time to share your thoughts!

I feel pretty much the same way. The reason is that while I know they're pointless there's still that ingrained collector instinct telling me I should collect all of these things and whenever I fall prey to the more primitive parts of my brain I end up having a worse experience than if I didn't
Or simply put, they take focus away from the actual gameplay experience.

lol that was my first thought too. Furthermore, I was ready to post a wall of text about my anti-achievement movement.... but oh well... no joy :(

Honestly, I wouldn't care one way or the other, but in my opinion, achievements are a complete waste of time, at least for the player. Developers started using them to see how much of their crap the players would put up with, which is why some are automatic as you get past certain parts of the game, and others are completely absurd things like, "Dodge 200 consecutive lightning bolts" or something. Unless it's something impossible (Daggerfall, for example), I 100% all of the games that I finish, and never once have I included achievements in that 100% completion; they're a developer's way to trick you into doing their chores. You could do the same thing with a child - "I'll give you an achievement if you take out the garbage!" "Okay, Mom!" - and to that end, it's even a little insulting. It can also suck out part of what makes games special. I remember being in charge of Game Club at the local high school, and my students were playing Left 4 Dead; one of them pulled this really slick move where a tank was charging him, and he backed off the building, hung on with his fingertips, and the thing just ran off the top of a skyscraper; I congratulated him for such a cool stunt, and he just said, "Ms. Kojiro (not my real name), that was for an achievement." DEFLATED. All of the neat little discoveries reduced to a soulless paint-by-numbers.
All that said, I did begin this post with "I wouldn't care one way or the other," and I do mean that. I think they're stupid, but despite having OCD and one of my obsessions/compulsions being lists, I'm more than capable of ignoring them. If SteamGifts had achievements, it wouldn't be any different to me from the 99 achievements I have at GameFAQs, a site that I barely visit; they'd just be... there. Granted, I don't even read my feedback notes at GameFAQs anymore, because most of them are just people telling me to kill myself for not including their favorite game in my top 10 lists, but even with a community that I like and care about like here or Backloggery, I wouldn't care about achievements.
Thank you for watching. Next time on Mother Kojiro Rants, we will be diving into the colloquial use of the word, literally. Please like, comment, and subscribe.
