Why not give away only to "Playing Appreciated"? =P

Hey there. I'm sorry if this has been asked before. But as someone very new to Steamgifts (not even a week here yet!) I am slightly puzzled why people don't just post all their giveaways at Level 0?
Is there something I'm missing? Are the higher levels trying to avoid bots? (I heard mentions of these!) I was in the mind of just giving everyone the chance to win great games if ever I give away game keys. Or do people set levels only for games they think is special or something.
Can someone enlighten me? Throw me their two cents?
(I made the mistake of setting my first 3 giveaways at one month each, and now I'm stuck waiting for a month before I can even think of leveling ;D And joining giveaways ofc. I've been lucky so far! I wish I could make more giveaways! I've got about 20 keys and gotta wait for the month to finish lol)

I always do level 0 giveaways only. Still, since the recent steam gifting changes, I can't even give away anything. xD

Yep, multiple ones. xD It's almost impossible to send a steam gift to someone nowadays. https://steamcommunity.com/games/593110/announcements/detail/1301948399254001159

Welcome to Steamgifts, Alkorri! :D
These are two reasons people may want to add a level requirement to their giveaways:
That's pretty much it, honestly. It's up to preferences.

Who gave away some games, generally has a better idea how the site works than absolute new people, so it's easier to get hold of them about activating keys and such. Easier to deal with someone who spent at least a little time to get into the system.
( you can try to submit a ticket and ask for more givaeway slots - not sure how fast it would work, but maybe you could get more opportunity to give away your games than waiting a month :)

1 hour is short and its the minimum to your Giveaway, so i consider between 1 day - 3 days the optimum if you want all interested in the game enters. Anyways its up to you, if you are in a hurry for leveling up, then 1 hour.

I think, the most common' reason for not making level 0 giveaways is that some people don't like "leechers". When you make a public level 0 giveaway, there's a good chace it's gonna be stormed by hundreds or even thousands of people who won a lot but never gave anything in return. I'm not saying that it's wrong, I'm just stating the fact that many giveaway creators don't like it.
Another reason is, that with level 0 giveaways you usually have a high percentage of rulebreakers (non activated wins, regifted, multiple wins ...stuff like that).
An then, there's bots.
Comment has been collapsed.
I wouldn't consider you a leech. You won 2 giveaways and already made 3 of your own.
The leeches are the level 0 who just stop by to try and win anything they can without ever contributing back. (Or level 1 who made a single giveaway in order to increase their chance at winning something by gaining access to lvl 1 giveaways)
This is why, sadly, many are not even considering making giveaways for anyone under level 2 or 3. Those legitimate users who are either new to the site or simply can't afford to give back end up being collateral damage.

I appreciate the thought, Zomby2D (what's wrong with 3D ones). So would you say you set giveaways at minimum Level 2? I'm trying to decide what would be a good time period. I notice a lot of people seem to posting GA that end within three hours!
...I want to sleep at some point ;)
Comment has been collapsed.
There is no right or wrong period. I usually let my giveaways run for 24 hours to a week (so people in all time zones will at least have a chance to join) but I've been known to do flash giveaways lasting an hour or two.
Nothing wrong with 2D zombies, it's just a contraction of two nicknames I've started using at some point because Zomby was often unavailable. The 2D part comes from my college years where friends were saying I that was too skinny to actually have a 3rd dimension.

Hah, please don't. You've already made 3 more giveaways than some people who've been here for 4 years. Its those types of people that cause the higher giveaway levels---but I've learned even climbing higher you still can't escape people with years to accumulate these huge ratio differences or even the ones who leveled up years ago and just coasted ever since.
I usually avoid the 0/1 level stuff because it's just so easy to get those first few levels that anyone without them basically has to almost go out of the way to stay like that after so long. But, it definitely hurts the opportunities for new people, who really don't deserve the discrimination since they haven't even had a chance and it feels like it takes so much time (especially waiting on people just to hit received, which really matters at the time) . I certainly remember hating back when I started at level 0 (which is apparently 364 days ago in fact)

Level 0 is a key cemetery. There are at least five digits worth of bot accounts, tens of thousands of people who enter anything only for a +1, and I would be vastly surprised if the played percentage of games won at level 0 public giveaways was higher than 0.01%. (I remember exactly one person from my 3500+ ones who actually played it.) You only put up keys there when you are absolutely not caring about where that game ends up or if it will ever be installed.

I'm actually even now playing the game I just won. UFO Aftershock, I'm really enjoying it! I didn't realise how much I love TBS until now
One thing I like about this site is me checking out and learning about the existence of obscure games I would have never heard of if I hadn't been curious about seeing them here

Actually, not you, at least on the level 0 public. The person went and weeks later wrote a short little impressions list on the giveaway, this is why I remember the fact.
I recall you playing a HOG from me, but it was much later, maybe late last year, and I recall it being a HOG group giveaway.

I mix it up, usually depending on (how I perceive) the quality of the game. I'll set bundle trash at low levels and put better games at higher levels. Plus, if everyone did GAs at level 0, what would be the point of, or incentive to, leveling up? Your reward for giving away a lot of games is that you'll gain access to GAs where you have a better chance of winning.

I make some level 0 giveaways, but like others have said, I like to reward the people who keep this site running rather than people who are just here on the take.

can't speak on behalf of others(too lazy to read other people comments), my thoughts on the matter are simple:
1) i don't like people that give nothing to nearly nothing gaining things(example someone giving away a game or two and then leeching for 3 years and winning over 500 games).
2) bots.
3) i sometimes do set my levels for giveaways on lower standards but normally my giveaways are made for my whitelist(very special group consisting of 31 people only atm), my groups, and publicly high levels(atleast level 5), pretty sure you understand my intentions there.
that's pretty much it, ofcourse not every person thinks the same way but the majority of people that do restrictions on giveaways think the same way as i do i believe.

Welcome aboard the train to crazytown. :)
There are a shitload of people on this site using scripts/bots to auto-join giveaways blindly, without reading descriptions and without regard for what the game is. Giving away a VR-only game? Probably 99% of the entries, if not more, will be people who do not and will never have a VR rig. Same if you're giving away a game for toddlers, or whatever.
People at higher levels have proven themselves to be engaged with the site, by making giveaways, and are more likely to be actual human beings who are paying attention and using their brain when entering giveaways. There are still high-level users who use autojoin scripts and enter things blindly, but the percentage is smaller the higher up you go, in my experience.
There is no reward to the giver for making low-level giveaways. If your GA gets more entries, you as a giver do not benefit from that in any way. Level 0 users are more likely to break the rules of the site and cause headaches, so there are only negatives. Other than perhaps making yourself feel better about giving more people a chance to win.
Out of a million users, 850,000 of them are level 0. That means they have never given away a single thing here. You can literally buy a key for 1 cent (or less) and level up in 1 hour.
That being said, everyone is free to give whatever they want to whomever they want. And they can also choose to never give anything away and remain at level 0 and miss out on a bunch of giveaways. :P

I really wish now I could have changed the level of my existing Giveaways now that you've explained in details about the scripts/bots (I didn't have a clear idea of them before, thank you) But at least I will know better next time :)
Edit: And if this is the train, where/what is crazytown?? ;D

crazytown = level 10 :D
Here is an example of a recent level 0 giveaway I made as an experiment:
https://www.steamgifts.com/giveaway/oLCwz/lup
If you read the description, you can see how completely obvious the link to the additional giveaway is, right?
Now look at how many people entered it...
Comment has been collapsed.
I'll try listing every possible reason why people do this (I don't necessary agree or disagree with them):
With the creation of sgtools many of these issues were tackled, but this means another step in a long process depending on how many giveaways you created.
Oh, and this is my reason: I'm part of giveaway group now, so giving away games to people I know it's somehow more rewarding.

You should read this if you haven't: guidelines
even though it says "guidelines" many of them are not just nice to follow tips but actual rules.

That last sentence nearly got a critique from me about how I ( and a few others) BL higher level folks that only do group give aways, yet still enter public give ways, until I saw your wins. If cats wore hats, mine would be off to you, you apparently only enter those same group gives

Thanks, man. Giveaway groups can be a really fun thing. I've been part of that community for 3.5 years (that's almost 90% of my time on SG) and it has been a life-changing experience for me. Not to get melodramatic, but these guys helped me through my darkest time and the funny thing is that after all this time they still don't know this. I'm now a staff member and it has become the hobby I enjoy the most, even more than playing games. I've met wonderful people from all over the world so that means I got to know different cultures, languages, religions, etc. This also gave the opportunity to practice my English. All I'm saying is maybe you should give it a chance, having a community within a community is not that bad.
Oh, and I did my research. I won my last public giveaway 8 days before I joined my first group, that was more than 3 years ago.
Comment has been collapsed.
And finally, giveaway creators simply want to avoid the hassle of dealing with any possible outcome listed above, so they don't have to create a ticket (SG staff has better things to do).
There is an argument to be made for people who know how the site works making low level giveaways in order to catch rule breakers and nipping them off at the bud, before they've reached a point where they've got loads of rule infractions. Some of those people are breaking the rules out of ignorance rather than malice/greed, and they might be turned to the right path by a swift & short suspension. I've considered doing more "Honey pots" to attract rule breakers due to how "successful" the last accidental one turned out to be, but I'm not entirely sure if support want to deal with another flood of user reports from me ;)
Comment has been collapsed.
That sounds like fun and could work. My only suspension was because I didn't activate one or two wins (I don't really remember), this was 3 years ago. The giveaway creator reported me, but since I had the games in my inventory (silly me), I just activated them and the suspension was lifted in a couple of hours after that.
So, I learned my lesson and never did it again.

I don't think that argument is used as Lvl0s providing incentive, but that a new user winning a lvl0 giveaway and receiving a working key confirms the validity of the site, thus rendering some fears null.
Assume you join the site today, not knowing anything about it, and seeing nothing but lvl1+ giveaways so you can't enter anything unless you "pay" for it. Hear that alarm in your head yet? :P

I started off making level 0 giveaways but found I had a lot of problems with winners - up to and including people entering giveaways with scripts who complained their wins were 'shit' and people who didn't understand the concept of marking wins as received. Making higher level giveaways saves yourself a lot of hassle - at the very least it means your winners will have had to have made giveaways of their own and will understand/appreciate what is involved.
If you feel strongly about making giveaways that are available to all users I'd suggest making invite only level 0 giveaways and posting the links as trains/puzzles/whatever here in discussions. It's something I've done in the past and it generally works out a lot better than posting public level 0 giveaways.
Comment has been collapsed.
It isn't foolproof and it comes with a few of its own problems - but if people have to pay at least some attention to enter then you have a lot less trouble with winners. Another bonus is that you can 'protect' a train behind an SGtools gate if you want and weed out rule breakers and people with terrible ratios without penalising users who simply aren't in a position to make many giveaways.

Hey there. I'm sorry if this has been asked before. But as someone very new to Steamgifts (not even a week here yet!) I am slightly puzzled why people don't just post all their giveaways at Level 0?
The lower the level, the greater the odds of the winner being someone who breaks the rules. My last low level giveaway resulted in multiple people getting permanently suspended due to repeatedly breaking the rules. Support must have been really happy with me for all the extra work that giveaway generated ;)
Out of the 7 winners of that particular giveaway the played stats looks like this:
Games with any Playtime 75.1% (127/169), Games with ≥1 Achievement 5.66% (6/106)
(card farmer)
Games with any Playtime 1.51% (7/465), Games with ≥1 Achievement 1.98% (5/252)
I don't know why this person enters giveaways. They don't even farm them for cards. To rob other people of the chance to win?
Games with any Playtime 71.7% (38/53), Games with ≥1 Achievement 0.00% (0/28)
So not actually played a single won game...
Games with any Playtime 70.5% (43/61), Games with ≥1 Achievement 0.00% (0/39)
Same
Games with any Playtime 13.3% (4/30), Games with ≥1 Achievement 0.00% (0/15)
Again, this person just takes games.
Games with any Playtime 17.7% (97/549), Games with ≥1 Achievement 0.707% (2/283)
And again. A bit of card farming going on
Games with any Playtime 76.4% (113/148), Games with ≥1 Achievement 1.16% (1/86)
And another farmer.
I'm fine with people not playing things like bundled games instantly, but really, 549 won games, and you've played 2?
So yeah, low level public giveaways tend to just go to bot users. Low level forum giveaways are still not great, but a bit better.

I used to set my giveaways at level 0, but now I mostly set them to level 2 or 3.
As for time, I set mine for one hour only! I like lightning giveaways bc they're more exciting and also I don't have to worry about them for that long.
Comment has been collapsed.
I always wondered about those one hour giveaways! ;D These are partly responsible for my lack of sleep the past four days ;)
But what about those who need to work or only get time off at the end of the day? I was thinking of setting my next GA period to three days shortest... not sure! Still gathering opinions :)

But what about those who need to work or only get time off at the end of the day?
Well, there is always someone online and someone else offline. You can't reach every single person on the site, no matter how many and how long your GAs are. If you are giving away recently bundled games, there's probably at least 10 chances running at any hour.
How long I make my GAs depend on the game, who I am aiming to reach and what my mood is. I prefer shorter GAs: I'd probably make everything 15 mins if I could. :D Shorter GAs also give the entrants better odds.
If you are looking to avoid bots, setting your GA to start in the future (don't remember the exact number of hours) will help weed out some.
Comment has been collapsed.
Most everything has already been said but I'll throw in my own two cents-giving a small level restriction does weed out most rulebreakers but I wouldn't aim to put it too high unless your specifically looking to reward high levels.
Also +1 for the comment about joining playing apreaciated. Basically you have to play about any thing you win from the group within a month and it's a great way of giving away games you think are better than others if you want them to actually be played by people.-on that note you wouldn't need to put a level restriction on one of these group GA's to weed out rulebreakers. (It doesn't have a high requirement for joining so you may still get someone breaking the rules but it has a reaĺly still limited chance in comparison.
As for how long I like to make my GA's around 2 days long to maximize chances for people to enter if they want the game.
The only reason to make hour long GA's is for trying to level up quickly. I've also made a few week long Ga's but they were for events
Comment has been collapsed.
Well.. lower levels have more participants. meaning chances of winning are lower.
I havent given away alot, but once I achieve higher level, I also give away for higher level.
I personally dont like the fact that freeloaders can just register and get games.
Give something too. Than youll get back.
I understand that for those who give away A LOT of games, there are more logical reasons with facts and all.. (like Fnord already mentioned before me)
But for a regular user who wins something, gives something - its more about the moral of it all. Also Ive seen in descriptions this too - people want to give better and more expensive games for those who have contributed, not just some random dude who just enters every giveaway (not even talking about bots).
