Hey there. I'm sorry if this has been asked before. But as someone very new to Steamgifts (not even a week here yet!) I am slightly puzzled why people don't just post all their giveaways at Level 0?

Is there something I'm missing? Are the higher levels trying to avoid bots? (I heard mentions of these!) I was in the mind of just giving everyone the chance to win great games if ever I give away game keys. Or do people set levels only for games they think is special or something.

Can someone enlighten me? Throw me their two cents?

(I made the mistake of setting my first 3 giveaways at one month each, and now I'm stuck waiting for a month before I can even think of leveling ;D And joining giveaways ofc. I've been lucky so far! I wish I could make more giveaways! I've got about 20 keys and gotta wait for the month to finish lol)

EDIT: Wow that was fast! I submitted a support ticket (thanks, Heroic Moderator and adam1224 for the suggestion) and got extra slots now. Now does anyone have a suggestion for how long do they usually give their GAs, and at what minimum level?

I usually have my GAs between one and two hours. Found that's the best way to do it. Otherwise you are waiting and waiting.

I usually set a minimum level of 3 because it seemed like a sweet spot that's not too hard to reach but still that avoids most trouble makers. Sometimes I set the minimum level to 2, but not lower.
The reason for this, for me, is so that the winners have already ran at least a few GAs themselves, so know what it feels like to have to deal with issues and will hopefully behave nicely (like, not wait a week before marking the game as received)

Sometimes (not as often as I wish....) I run GAs to reward people who contribute more, but then I run those as private GAs behind SGTools gates focused on ratio. Still with a low level 2 minimum.

I'm still a little uncertain how SGTools (I did read about it, but the link confused me!) but I appreciate your input. Level 3 seems like a nice number to me too :)

Yeah SGTools isn't super trivial, although it's not as hard as it may look either, at least as long as you stick to the standard filters. The custom filters are more interesting IMO, but it takes quite a bit of reading to find exactly what you want... the best way to learn for me was to look at other people's filters ;)
Also, interesting things if you haven't found them already:

I usually set giveaways at Level 2, and for one or two hours. Something quick and easy.

Level 2 and over users have never caused me any problems.

Welcome to the site Alkorri!

To answer your questions I normally make lvl 2+ giveaways, or if I go lower I set them as Invite Only and post them to the forums instead of public, cause I'm lazy af and those things drastically lower the chances that I'll have to send in a ticket for whatever reason that has already been mentioned by others. It still happens, just not as much.

As for duration depends on what it is and for who. Whitelist usually gets lengthy ones (1 week+), Groups/Forum get a medium duration (1-3 days) and publics are usually fast(1h-1d). But there's no "golden rule", this is something for everyone to do as they see fit. Wanna level fast? Just host something for an hour. Wanna make sure everyone has a chance to see it? Make it a day so all timezones can get a chance. Etc etc

Thank you for the welcome! I am frankly amazed at the huge amount of warm replies from people I've never met. And here I was stalking the site on my lonesome the past few days, never even knowing the wonders of filters until a kind Moderator sent me the link XD

Welcome to Steamgifts Alkorri!

It seems our fine community answered your questions pretty thoroughly, so I'll throw in a basic introduction of the site. I would suggest reading the FAQ and Guidelines as these help answer many of the questions new users often have about the site and it's functions. You can find all the information you need about Contributor Level here and here.

Useful guides:

Giveaway settings
It's a good practice checking the winner's profile before delivering a gift and, if the winner didn't activate some games, or if he won the same game multiple times, you should request a new winner.

With that said, I hope you enjoy your time here! :D

I'm embarrassed that I missed some of these guides! Couldn't find them. I like the idea of checking a winner's profile, that's a good tip.

THANK YOU! I've started new GAs now :)

Just out of curiosity, as this is something that came up at another place in this thread:
What is support's stance on honey pot giveaways, that are meant to attract rule breakers, and going through the entries for them and reporting those who have been naughty (within reason, of course, going with recent rules infractions, and not those that are years old)? Do you think it ends up being too much work for support, or is it something that you would not mind seeing?

I don't mind them at all, granted that when the giveaway is over the winner is delivered his gift and it isn't deleted beforehand. Keep in mind for user reports, as diligently as we are trying to go through them all, it probably will be a while before the tickets can get handled. I try to make it a priority to go to the oldest tickets and make my way forward with them.

But, anytime you see a user who has violated a site rule, don't hesitate to create a ticket about them.

I personally like to make giveaways the same level as mine. That way I think I'm being fair with the ones who made the same as me. Yep, there are people who is level 4 with 2 giveaways, other with 200, but they worked for it. Anyway, level 0 is full of regifters, non activated, bots and weird people.

Biggest reason is to avoid bots, but I like to put my GAs on higher level so people who have given a lot have a bigger chance of winning some stuff too.

I used to think that too, but then I found out that many of the people with higher level reached such high level by making most of their GAs inside groups. I don't mind people who prefer to do GAs only/mostly in groups... as long as they participate in GAs only/mostly in groups.
But if they make only group GAs and then still enter every possible high-level public GAs, that's leeching too in my book. That's why when I want to favor people who have given a lot, I use SGTools to check for public and private ratios (ie excluding whatever happened in groups), like this (NB it's just an example, the GA there has been over for like a month)

People set giveaways at higher levels to show appreciation for those other users that actually contribute.

Thank you everyone for your feedback. I have now submitted a number of giveaways now that the awesome mods have given me some extra slots :)

I have kinda placed all the games for three days for Level 2s+ Seems to be a good ballpark!

If I make a public giveaway it will probably be level 4-5 to minimize my chances of having to deal with a rule breaker (Several of my level 0 giveaways ended up being regifted, sadly). It's honestly for purely selfish reasons, to spare me the need to reroll or be annoyed afterwards. If it's a private giveaway shared in the forum, i'll do it level 0-3 usually, depending on the games (Making higher level giveaways for the better games encourages people to give more in order to get to those levels. So, again, selfish af).
If I give to Playing Appreciated I'll usually keep it level 0-1 because knowing the winner is definitely going to play the game is more important than rewarding higher levels, and I know I won't have to deal with rerolls in that group.

In terms of giveaway length, I usually do anywhere between 1 hour and a few days. Usually I think I aim for about 24 hours. I really mostly base the ending time based around when I think I'll be online and available to give out the prizes to the winners. So if I know I'll be out all day on Saturday I won't make my giveaways end until Sunday morning.

Public giveaways, lower-level giveaways, tend to have more entries, so they don't need to last very long. Private giveaways will usually need to last a few days so people can see it and enter...

You will get a sense for it over time. Ultimately it is up to you to decide if you want to kind of manage the total number of entries. One one hand, more entries = more people have a chance to win, on the other hand fewer entries = the people who enter have a greater chance of winning.

Good luck and have fun! :)
