Hi guys,

I am planning on changing my PC and I am stuck at CPUs and motherboard. Can you guys give me some ideas?
I am also thinking on getting an ASUS GeForce® GTX 1070 STRIX, 8GB GDDR5, 256-bit, Corsair Vengeance LPX 16GB (2x8GB) DIMM, DDR4, 3000MHz, a Samsung 850 PRO Basic 512 or Samsung 850 EVO 500GB + 1Tb WD Black. Unfortunately, that's about all I could think of so far.

Any ideas? :D

What's your budget?

Go for an i7 7700K if you do video editing or similar. If it's for gaming only, pick the i5 7600K. Either way, choose the ASUS STRIX Z270F or Z270E as your motherboard.

i recommend going for a i7-6700k or i7-7700k. it will serve you well in games and all other applications. and yes, the i7 is better in games than an i5. especially if you go for more than 60Hz. and even at 60Hz there are examples where an i7 is better. so if you want a system without compromises, go for the i7.

i personally have a MSI Z170 Carbon board (there is already a Z270 version of that board, if i recall correctly), which is pretty nice for the money. Asus also has good boards. i don't really know the whole market well enough to give you a more specific answer.

The i7-7700K will be better if you do stuff like streaming or video editing, not worth the money for just gaming though.

depends. at 60Hz - yes, you're right. even if there are exception to that, it's probably not worth the money. but if you go above 60, a i7 makes a lot of sense.

Nice idea. I didn't follow those much but yeah they sound promising. Depends if OP can wait until they're released. And don't mind maybe waiting for nothing because, from the rumors I heard, AMD isn't going to be quite generous with the pricing :s

The question is how much can you add for it ?

The new AMD Ryzen CPUs looks promising and are just about to be released globally, so i will advise you to wait just a couple of weeks if you're not in a hurry.

Also, is this config only for gaming or you do other stuff ? Like video rendering, streaming.... Because if you do anything else that is CPU intensive, a Ryzen 8 cores 16 threads is probably going to be your best bet. Way way cheaper than Intel counter part.

To summarize my thoughts :

  • For a gaming only config you can go with :

Motherboard : Gigabyte Z270X Gaming 7 - 260€ more or less.
CPU : i7 7700k - 400€ more or less.

Are you going to overclock though ?

  • If you do more than gaming :

Motherboard : X370 Asus Crosshair VI Hero - Price not confirmed yet, should be around 250€.
CPU : Ryzen 7 1700X - 415€ more or less.

don't you think it's dangerous to recommend a cpu that is not even out, and for which we barely have any real performance information?

There has been a few leaks here and there to make us optimistic. But you're right it's better to wait for more official information about all the Ryzen lineup. It shouldn't take long, i heard about February 28th for the first public reviews.

that motherboard sounds expensive af

I got a MSI z170a SLI PLUS and it has everything I need and more. I'm even using a 10 year old keyboard on the PS2 slot. 130€

It is expensive but it brings a lot on the table, it's future proof. That said, i can understand not everyone has the needs for all of this.

Good thing nowadays there's a lot of choice for mobos.

What is the budget?
Ideally, an i5-7600K would be good for anything but high-demanding multimedia work, completed with a motherboard that has Z170 or Z270 chipsets (the chipset is always part of the motherboard name, so it is easy to tell). As for manufacturers, most any suffices from Gigabyte, MSI, ASUS, and ASRock, although I favour the latter. The only thing you need to look out are the number of USB and SATA slots and how the SATA ones are arranged (some motherboards have them facing the side, some face the front, and depending on your case, one should give you more problems than the other).

If the budget is lower, go for an i5-7400/7500 with a motherboard of H170/H270/B150/B250 chipset.

Or just wait for the new AMD CPUs and buy one. :) If they only deliver one-third of the promises, it should be a comparable alternative for current Intels. The pricing on desktop gaming-grade Intels has been really stupid since they have an effective market monopoly. Compared to their real advantage over the old AMDs available, they cost almost twice as much as they should.
