Rise of the Triad

What do we all think about this game? I think it looks pretty amazing.

I hope it'll be good. Pre-confirmed for trading cards, too.

Doesn't look that great, but I love it when a game surprises me.

Loved original game, hope this one will be fun. Looks like they get some weapons from first one.

I haven't played the original yet, but it looks good. Preordering in general is dumb but the preorder deal is pretty nice and doesn't include any annoying preorder-exclusive crap, and the price is lower than expected (especially with the extra 25% off on GMG) so I figured this one was just about worth it.

Plus they said all future DLC will be free, the devs seem super nice in general, worth supporting.

Do eyes still bounce off the screen? That's my only lasting memory of RoTT.

I think it looks pretty boring tbh...the graphics look terrible and gameplay looks like Painkiller+Serious Sam. Anyway, I pre-purchased it for nostalgy since I played the original.

Necroing!

Just bought the game, tried playing the older games, the controls were super wonky if I tried to use mouse(I prefer it, even for older games like doom).

Anyone know a mod, kinda like zDoom to kinda update it in the control sense? Really looking forward to the new one but somehow these got past my radar in the past, looks super fun.

i think it looks pretty well if you look at the original game.

to play the older games i would suggest you look for winrott or even better winrottGL
with that you can even get a little bit better textures and play it smoother than the original.

heres a link for winrottGL

this will help you

And now that it's out, bump with first impressions:

This is a PROPER remake. It does a good job at going back to the original designs going from there, expanding some points and streamlining others.

  • It maintains the art style and goofy undertones of the original despite running on the much more modern Unreal 3 engine. Right down to the stiff enemy animations to match up with the original motion-captured sprites. This doesn't stop it from playing more modern tricks and adding some short set-pieces such as trucks crashing into buildings etc. but those too are done in cheezy b-movie style to fit in with the rest of the game.

  • This also includes most of the stupid little details, such as funny labels on the difficulty levels and exit messages (taken straight from the original), the occasional sinister-sounding "You Suck" chant when you die etc. are faithfully reproduced as well. And the Ludicrous Gibs are now rendered in full-detail hi-res 3D, including teh occasional enemy eyeball sticking to your camera.

    • Gameplay wise it also draws from, and expands on the original. It's fast-paced, there's no ammo pickups (The various rocket launchers do have limited ammo, but you can only get more by picking up a new one). So don't expect an overdone remake that tries to tell a cinematic story, as it focuses more on running, gunning, scoring and good old-fashoined rocket-jumping . (Yeah, it does draw in other old-school elements that weren't really possible with the old engine for good measure.) Notable changes:
      1. No auto-aiming towards enemies that are lower or higher since you now have proper mouse look.
      2. The scoring now has a combo-based multiplier to give it some more depth.
      3. There's more variety in environmental hazards than I remember from the original.
      4. There's no life counter, and the levels have checkpoints instead of being able to save anywhere. Note that restarting from a checkpoint wipes out your score so if you're going for the leaderboards, you'll want to play your levels start to finish without dying.

It's ufortunately not glitch-free - it's quite easy to get stuck on the environments sometimes, especially when moving walls are concerned. (which can trap you with no way out) Hopefully that'll get patched up at some point.

Also, I've not tried the multi-player yet, so I can't comment there.

Overall, it's well worth the asking price if you are looking for an FPS that looks current, but plays like they used to play in the pre-CoD age.

I bought two copies of it and gave one to a friend.

It's amazing, everyone should get it.

It does however have checkpoints (and no saves), which is retarded for a PC game, so beware.

Really wish for a map.
Anyways, game is (appears to be) fantastic. Not linear, good humor, doors and keys and all that stuff. and of course, absolutely ridiculous weapons.
Game feels weird though. Seems like a problem on the community forums, did some of the fixes, works much better, but I dont know. still feels a little weird.
