The FAQ and Guidelines should pretty much cover most of what you need to know.
There's also this thread which is old but might still be helpful to you.
And people all have different reasons to add users to their whitelist.
Welcome to SG:)

Yes, this site was also very overwhelming for me, too when I first joined. As igel2005 pointed out, please read through the materials in his links, which you can also find in the Help button at the top right of the website.
Once you're through reading that you'll know how whitelists and blacklists work.
When you click the drop-down arrow next to your Account, you'll see My Stats. There you can see how many people have blacklisted or whitelisted you. Thanking someone is just basic politeness here so, it more than likely won't get you any whitelists, however some users may whitelist you if you attach an appropriately cute/funny pic to your thank you message. It's all up to each user's digression.
When you click on Discussions, you'll suddenly have on the left-side categories of discussions. Group Recruitment is one of them. The more groups you're a part of, the more group restricted giveaways you can see and enter. However, every group has its own set of rules you'll need to follow and its own application method. They might have a requirement that you make a certain number of group-only giveaways or have a certain sent/won ratio of giveaways.
Personally, my favorite group is Playing Appreciated. They have a nice group of admins who spend their little free time checking every user's wins. They have a website that syncs up your playtime/achievements from your steam account to check your progress on playing through a game. Amazing, right? Here you can take a glimpse at every user's progress Playing Appreciated Tracker. The nice thing about this group is there is no mandatory giveaways you have to make or level requirement so you can apply right away at level 0. But you must read the rules carefully. People too often enter the group giveaways and don't get enough hours and achievements to qualify as being played, so make sure you only enter games you can do this, because once you win a game in this group the clock starts ticking and you have maximum 30 days to play this game to the required amount (exception being your get the gift creator's consent). So in short, don't bite off more than you chew :D Personally, I only giveaway highly recommended games to this group, because I know they'll get played.
Edit: Forgot to mention this useful tip to know if you want to filter out only giveaways above your level: Account ->Sync my Account -> On the left-side under Settings giveaways->hide giveaways above your level mark yes. I wish someone told me that.
Also, my friend zarddin also posted a similar post asking what to do as a new guy so you might want to read this if you have time.

Thank you for your patience in writing such a long post. I have gone through FAQs and Guidelines, has cleared most of the things. I will also check out the group you mentioned and others once i go through all the other replies on this thread.
Also i found this couple of days back Settings giveaways->hide giveaways above your level mark yes
is definitely a life saver.
Edit: oh no 1 blacklist just checked Stats

No problem - I tend to write a lot, when I'm passionate about something and I still feel like the new guy sometimes even after 10 months. This site is both really simple and hard to explain sometimes to other people.
People will blacklist you for any number of reasons. One example being they might blacklist you for posting this thread asking questions that are answered in the Guidelines and FAQs or because they see you've won 2 games and haven't sent any games yourself and kind of assume you're just a new ungrateful Leecher.
If you want to thank the giveaway creators you won games from, it's not too late. In the top left menu giveaways-> View Won -> Click each giveaway and comment in the comment box.

Agree that this can be annoying, my bad.
[because they see you've won 2 games and haven't sent any games yourself and kind of assume you're just a new ungrateful Leecher.]
I hope they check their blacklists to see if people have donated games weeks/months after they blacklisted, and remove them.
Just thanked the giveaway creators, thanks

Seems like everyone got you covered, so I just wanted to say welcome, and glad you found the discussions. Discussions are the best way to win giveaways since you will naturally find giveaways with less entries than if they were public. I also enjoy all the puzzles people make here, and as a result for solving them, you tend to get better odds.
Good luck winning games!

If you want a chance at one of the best games ever made, Slime Rancher, I welcome you to try out this monster I made!
If you want general opinions on when people whitelist/blacklist, basically I whitelist everyone who goes out of their way to be nice to me and I blacklist people who are rude and/or use cheats. Other people have other reasons for it.

Take your time with it, you have a little over one week to do it! Creating an account saves your progress in case you didn't know. I'm just thinking of that poor person who replied that it took them 4 hours to do it and I felt a little bad.

Took me about 3hrs, i am sorry to say but it got quite frustrating for me. I promise myself to not participate in Jigsaws with more than 160 pieces, 200 max for a very good game. But I see why ppl would like giant puzzles, sadly its not for me.

Oof, I definitely understand. Good job on doing it!

Also there is a link for group giveaways under the giveaways tab but I can join the GAs without joining the group??
You have to be part of a group to join their giveaways.
How does blacklist, whitelist work?
If you blacklist someone or someone blacklists you - in both cases they can't enter your giveaways and you can't enter theirs.
If you whitelist someone, they can join your "whitelist" giveaways (you can tell by the blue heart icon on the right side of a giveaway).
It doesn't go both ways like blacklisting does though. In order for you to see whitelist giveaways of other people, you have to be in their whitelist.
Do people add you to their whitelist when you thank them on their GAs?
Some people do, some don't.
Others even blacklist those who don't say thanks after winning a giveaway.
I see posts where people want their GAs to be entered by only people who play the games they win, how is this tracked do we join groups?
Playing Appreciated and Playing Matters are groups that enforce playing games won from the group.
There are also other groups but these two are the most accessible as far as play-based groups go.
There's also "Play a Game You Won on Steamgifts" which has monthly themes to make getting rid of your game backlog more fun and interesting.
Also how fast do my P (points?) recharge?
From the FAQ, "Every user on the site is given an equal number of points. You will receive 6 points every 15 minutes."
Welcome to Steamgifts! Hope you enjoy your time here!

Hello & welcome! I hope you enjoy your stay. ššš
I'm also relatively new despite my level. 6 months old. š
When I joined it was a little overwhelming as well. I learned quickly though. The etiquette was the main thing I had an issue with but I'm autistic (Asperger's) so that may play a part. Such as don't post thanks on every giveaway unless you actually win. That was a big one! Got 2 blacklists before I realized. I thought it was polite / what the standard was. I was wrong. š¤¦āāļø
It appears other posters such as @SolubleCrow have posted some things regarding etiquette. So hopefully you understand it better than I did at first. Regardless; don't post thanks on every GA. That's one piece of etiquette I learned quick. š
I'll post something completely different from the others as for help though. I'll dived the sections with line breaks for ease of reading. If you're not familiar with or comfortable using extensions or user scripts (TamperMonkey for example). In my case I use Augmented Steam, ITAD Everywhere, Steam Database & TamperMonkey with RaChart Enhancer,GiTHub Wiki SteamGifts Integration & SGTools Helper to make my experience here much better. To give you an idea of some of the things that can make this site more enjoyable & easy to use. Note that not all the above extensions affect SG directly. Some such as Augmented Steam, ITAD Everywhere & Steam Database have an effect on other sites but help improve my experience here.
For starters here's a useful site that complements this site. It's called sgtools.info & ESGST includes tools that use it.Here's a thread about it with links to scripts, etc.
I found the following to be of great use. Note it has a VERY large amount of settings as it's really customizable but I find Enhanced Steam Gifts & Steam Trades (which I will refer to as ESGST from here on) to be indispensable! IMHO the setup time is well worth it if you use the site regularly. Though it can do quite a bit to enhance your experience without having to spend to much time customizing it. I just tend to be very precise & a tad bit OCD about how I do things.
Enhanced Steam Gifts & Steam Trades Thread
There are also extension versions for Chrome & Firefox. If you use either of those browsers. I personally use Chrome ATM so I use:
If you use FireFox just Google ESGST for FireFox, etc.
Another thread that contains something of great use is the RaChart Enhancer. It shows you what you already own & such from the bundle thread. Speaking of; let me link you the thread that charts what bundles are going on. I'll follow it with a link to the chart enhancer.
New Master List of Ongoing Steam Bundles
Hopefully this information helps you! š¤ As I stated it might not be more useful once you've been here longer but I figured since it all helped me so much I'd post it. As I don't know your familiarity with scripts, extensions, etc. I figured it's best to share the information & let you consume it at your convenience.
I know I started using ESGST & other scripts & extensions within a few days of joining. I have no idea whether or not that's common or not? I don't even really know the general % of users that use scripts & extensions. As well as how long they used the site before deciding to use addons. It might make for an interesting thread / poll...
I digress though. My apologies. Again I hope the information I posted helps, welcome & enjoy your stay! If you have any questions just reply to me & I'm more than happy to try & answer them. š
Happy Holidays! āāā

You're welcome. I'm glad I could be of use. š
I hope it'll be a useful resource for any other new members reading your thread as well.I figured that it'd probably be a more useful future resource than a right now one though. š
Regardless I'm just glad it wasn't a wasted post. I don't post in discussions to much. I remember how overwhelming it was at first though. So when I saw your thread title I had to check it out.
Have a greet week. Happy Holidays, āāā

Darshao, Iām so glad you have found the HLL post a helpful tool for searching GAs.
I put together the tool to help me filter GAs and it proved to be useful for others. It made my day seeing your thread here appreciating the tool.
Thanks for your kind words...

Since everything is mostly covered here, I'll just offer my help in the form of my availability - if you have any questions, anything you're unclear about, looking for a specific userscript and whatnot, please feel free to ask away. You can also add me on Steam, just remember to comment on my profile if you do else I might accidentally forget who you are and ignore the request (as I do with most random requests). ^^

Good points! Buuut..
Well except if you farm blacklists like me. For whatever reason, my whitelists still outmatch my BLs tho. Even though I do nothing but shitpost. :/
I only play games people actually cared about to give away. I can't be arsed to play spammed 1P GAs.
I actually consider it to be standard. Whoever does not thank me for the GA after winning receives a blacklist from me immediately (If it's an AAA-GA, which I do often).

Hi, So I joined SG about 4 weeks ago, i have joined multiple giveaways and won a couple (Thank you)
At first I used to click on every giveaway but most would level-bar me, that's how I learnt about levels.
A week back just scrolling through settings I got to know about filters that I can use to just show only the GAs I can join.
Today I clicked on Discussions and am seeing a whole new world altogether. There is so much to this site it looked a a basic "enter giveaway->win/lose->repeat". I found a beautiful post which filters your giveaways [link https://www.steamgifts.com/discussion/Ov1oC/hll-hot-links-by-level-copies-and-region-restricted-added-useful-search-tool ]
Also there is a link for group giveaways under the giveaways tab but I can join the GAs without joining the group??
How does blacklist, whitelist work?
Do people add you to their whitelist when you thank them on their GAs?
I see posts where people want their GAs to be entered by only people who play the games they win, how is this tracked do we join groups?
All in all, I am a bit confused, although this may sound very basic for someone who has spent months/years here, its kind of overwhelming for me. Request someone to make a Guide for new people and let us know the best (optimal way to use the site..
Also how fast do my P (points?) recharge?
