Your train is late. Something unexpected blocking the tracks, the stationmaster said, though he was quick to assure you that the train would get here, eventually. It's been a few hours since then, however, and still you remain seated on the bench, waiting impatiently for your ride home. The handful of people that were waiting with you have all filtered out of the station, so now, as the evening slowly darkens into night, you huddle alone in your seat.
You're about to doze off when you hear it in the distance - a train whistle. Blearily, you get to your feet, eager to leave the tomb-like silence of the station. Soon enough, you can see it: a dark shape lumbering towards you from the distance. At first all you feel is relief, but as it approaches you notice it looks less like the sleek modern trains you're used to and more like a steam locomotive from long ago. It comes to a squealing halt in front of you, and now, illuminated by the station's dim lighting, it looks almost ghoulish. Odd shapes seem to jut out at unnatural angles, and steam billows around it almost menacingly.
It's definitely not the model you're used to, but there aren't any other trains scheduled for the rest of the night, and no other passengers waiting. Maybe your usual train was still stuck miles away, and they sent this old thing instead? You look around for the stationmaster, just to double check, but he's nowhere to be found. You take a step forward towards the train, and mingled with the smell of burning coal you can faintly catch the sweet, soothing scent of a rose. It seems to be coming from the foremost cabin.
With one last glance back towards the empty station, you slowly make your way up the stairs to the first train car.
October at long last! The days get cooler, the nights get longer, and better yet, the mosquitoes go back to Hell where they belong. Best of all, though? Halloween, and the celebration of all things spooky. To celebrate my favorite holiday and also my birthday month I thought I'd make a few horror-themed giveaways. Train currently has four cars, but I plan to add one each day for a few days after. All giveaways will end sometime on the 30th.
If you want to say thanks, feel free to recommend some music down below. Or just tell me about your plans for Halloween if you celebrate :)
