Every once in awhile I have friends who want me to join them in some random F2P game I don't often because I don't usually have interest in the game, and it's free. I guess you could say I'd feel almost guilty playing free games when I already have a huge backlog of paid games on PC, and my PS3 as well (even my Vita list is growing a little).

Anyone else have this 'problem'?

Pay = full of idiots too though I think i've encountered more idiots in call of duty or rust, than I have in Neverwinter.

Personally I usually look for games with a single purchase whether F2P or not that adds enough to be a game changer.
If a F2P game is good and has items worth getting like Smites all god pack or LoLs starter packs I'd get it.
Bought TF2 before it was F2P and it benefits you if you just spend 5 on it.
Dota 2 is a quality title, but I have not invested heavily as others.
I'm also playing Heroes of the Storm atm and Hearthstone.

Prefered single purchase games but if a F2P game is good enough it might be worth looking into.
Also F2P games that last and have a sizeable player base often get more updates than many paid games which may get a single update a month or less and over time 1-2 years no updates whatever while F2P games will continue with updates if they survive.

You get all the premium of TF2 for 50 cents or less actually. I bought TF2 1 hour before it went Free to Play... didn't know it was going.

I thought they wouldn't let people buy TF2 a week before it went F2P?

I bought the Orange Box specifically for TF2. Previously I had seen the Box and I already had Portal, but Half-life was popular so I figured why not pay the little extra and get the Orange Box instead of just TF2.

I admittedly seldom touch Free to Play games anymore... mostly because that is a bit of a misnomer. Usually multiplayer free to play means you can play the game, but if you want to do anything, especially end game, you have to micro-pay eventually or spend months/years grinding for something that likely would cost you 99 cents to just buy. If it is micro-pay for non-game unbalancing convenience/cosmetic things only (TF2) then I am more than happy to play and micro-pay. It's just being forced to multi-pay that I dislike.

On the other hand, I hate the monthly fees for games you also have to buy out right. You spent $60 on the base game $40 on each of the expansions and still pay $15 a month to access what you paid for? I find that crazy. Sure for all intents and purposes $15 is nothing really. One could work one shift at even a fast food place and have enough to pay for the entire month and have enough money left over for a cosmetic item.... that isn't the point. If I pay for the month, I feel compelled to play it as much as possible to make the most out of my money. Even if I don't feel like playing it, I feel I have to. I much prefer being able to pick up an play today and then maybe not touch it for a few weeks or a few months. I am getting off topic....

I have tried many free to play games, some were fun, but most of them eventually you hit the pay wall where you either need to stop and restart, grind like crazy until you are sick of it, or fork over your credit card numbers. As a Developer, I see nothing wrong with supporting someone's work, we wouldn't be able to make new games without said support, but hiding it behind the Free-to-Play banner with blatant paywalls... just isn't right. Unlimited Time Free Trial.. maybe... sure... that works for me, but not just Free-to-Play... because it isn't really. I'd prefer a single purchase (Guild Wars) to fund the Developer and paying for OPTIONAL add-on content.... not just a hat.... I feel like playing TF2 again now...

Uhhh... I think I might have ranted a bit

tl;dr I used to play F2P games but then I took a Pay Wall to the knee.

This is another reason I stopped playing Runescape. It was cheap, but I feel like I need to play it to get my money's worth.

It's kind of why I want a Gym membership. lol

I count the time I have spent or will spend as "paying" just as much as any monetary funds, and as such I have no such guilt any more over a free to play game. As long as I can get enjoyment out of it, it's worth trying to me.

The only thing that would change my mind about playing it referring to it being F2P is when it's pay2win or paying gives you advantages over other players even if they're not game-breaking, I just don't like it. If you're gonna give a game for free, then make it even and fair, please do add stuff that won't affect the gameplay, they add variety, but otherwise then it's a nono for me.

I will if it is a game I seem really interested in. The only 2 FTP games I can ever remember being obsessed with are Tibia and SWTOR, only cause I love Star Wars and Bioware. Most of the time I'll focus on my backlog.

It depends on the game, but at least for MMO's in particular I want to know the business model and how "power" is attained. Is it pay for convenience or pay to win? Is it primarily cosmetic items? Can these items also be acquired by playing the game? After I answer these questions, I make my decision. My personal preference is "Buy to Play" games like Guild Wars 2, but I don't mind paying a sub at all. It really depends on the game, but to answer your question. I'm always suspicious of free 2 play until I do the research.

Most often I just skip the free games. I guess the main reason is, that I don't really trust they've not ruined the game with F2P-mechanics. Also, many of them give a feeling that you need to create accounts, or characters and I don't really need any extra work, accounts and passwords with every damn thing. Finally, these F2P-games are constantly updated, often with large files and I'm already updating like 5-15 games a day, so I'll just end up removing them pretty soon anyway.

Not really, I do play Free/F2P games, most not really long just to try them, with the exception for Dota 2, which is also the only F2P game where I paid for items and I won't ever buy stuff in any other game.

I don't need to think about guilt or what, if i can play these game for free with friends instead of paying for playing alone, i don't see why i should feel ashame as the goal of playing game is to have fun for me, so i don't hesitate if i see a f2p that look interesting :D (and some f2p are far mor enjoyable than some shit you paid on steam....)

Most F2P games suck. Only a few can be entertaining without being P2W.

to me it also happens with MMP. i have GW2 and i almost never play it cuz none of my friends have the game so i stay away of MMP except from league of legends, that i play with friends but i wouldnt try another MOBA even if my mothers life depends on it.
Also, F2P have very toxic players.

Hmm, not any more, but for a while I was playing a lot of Team Fortress 2. It was pretty silly, I would see a great deal on something in my wishlist, buy it, then go back to playing the free game... :)

The only "free" game I played on Steam is Narcissu 1st & 2nd. Other than that, I don't really bother playing F2P games, especially those that are more multiplayer-oriented, because much like paid games on Steam, I don't really have the time to invest in it.

Actually it doesn't matter that much. As long as one enjoys the game it should be of no concern if it's paid or F2P. I actually play a lot of CS:GO just because it's convenient: I often only have 15 min to half an hour time to play something a day. Even though I love story driven games I will not start to play them if I know I don't even have one hour to play at once.
So I end up getting into a quick match of CS:GO and all the nice games I so much want to play sit on my backlog and stare at me. In that matter CS:GO is actually just like a F2P game cause the few Euros I paid for it (and getting all the other stuff i got within the Valve complete pack) are long paid off with all those hours spent on it...

I know what you mean about wanting to get value out of the investment you have in paid games. However, the only F2P game I've spent much time in lately is Heroes of the Storm as I have RL friends who want me to play it with them. I've played various other titles and genres of F2P games, but again mostly at the request of others and not my own driving interest. Most F2P games don't offer the sort of content I'm interested in and used to from classic (paid) games over the past couple decades. Also, outside of my circle of friends I've found some of the F2P communities to often range from immature to toxic, not something I care to deal with.

F2P games usually have those paid things that cap your experience but luckily that doesn't happen with all of them.
