Hi i'm doing this new pc build on the cheap, and i'd just like some suggestions on anything i might want to change or things i could cut out to make it cheaper. Mentioning now that i want to keep the keyboard, i'd prefer to keep the 770 and i might want to overclock depending on how this goes.
Thanks for any responses

If you want on the cheap go for AMD.

Don't go for AMD, it'll end up costing you more on the long run, nvidia 4 lyfe bitchees

I would get a better CPU and a H97 board instead of the Z97 unless you plan on overclocking your CPU in the future.

http://au.pcpartpicker.com/p/4mf499 I've changed it up a bit getting me an i5 but costing me a bit more which should be fine.

NVidia Will drop the price of Titan-Z 50%. You can wait that. Hihihihihi.

You definitely need to change your CPU, it might bottleneck your GTX 770.

Get an ASROCK H97 motherboard, they are good enough and switch to something like an i5 for your processor instead. And please drop that Razer keyboard and replace it with a cheaper keyboard. It's just not worth the price, since there are plenty of good keyboards which you can find even in Australia.

You might want to change to a smaller 550W semi-modular power supply. They are cheaper and who needs fully modular anyway? I mean you need a CPU right?

i chose the power supply mostly because it is gold 80+, i've changed the cpu to an i5, i'd prefer to keep the keyboard considering its cheaper than the rosewill's (probably because i'm in australia) and the motherboard i've got now is cheaper than most of the ASROCK motherboard or slightly more so by about a dollar or two. Thanks though.

Personally I'd go with something like this http://au.pcpartpicker.com/p/LH9Y23

Costs a little more but the GTX 970 is significantly more powerful. RAM honestly doesn't matter much. I'm not a fan of the EVGA PSU with it's split 12V rail.

As for the keyboard...I'd advise against Razer for multiple reasons but if you're set on it, then you're set on it.

Edit: Whoops apparently non-k Haswell's are completely locked down

What else would you suggest keyboard wise? and what were you talking about with the haswell k
(btw i'd prefer something like the tournament edition without the num pad but isn't necessary)

From the pcpartpicker list, I saw some Ducky keyboards. There should be other Ducky, Filco, or Cooler Master keyboards available if you look around. I'm not sure what stores sell to Australia and a lot of the listing on pcpartpicker from mechkb.com were out of stock.

SNB and IVB non-k models were able to be pushed up 4 bins to their max turbo speed on all cores. I originally had a Z97 motherboard in the build but I didn't realize Intel had locked Haswell non-k models down so that they can't be mildly overclocked at all.

If you want your pc running like the wind, need too a SSD, if remove the win8 for this money you can buy a samsung 840 EVO 240Gb, this one is very fast ;)

Windows 7 maybe? Most people prefer it although it will probably stop getting updates in some years. I myself prefer Windows 8 though.

simple changes to think about

here is what i would fix without looking at hard. try Reddit's build a PC sub it will help a lot.

Also that fan is not good for overclocking and the CPU should come with a simple fan so if you are serious about OCing I would suggest a different CPU cooler. I have that one you picked and it is the one part I wish I would have changed as my temps are on the high side.

Made some changes If not that cpu fan which one? I don't want it to cost much more.

You're doing something wrong, when your keyboard costs more than half of your monitor. This whole thread, makes me sad.

Well what would you suggest? i still want one without the number pad but not a cheap and crappy one

It's complicated, you want one of the best GPU today and you're willing to save on the rest of the PC. But you can save in few steps, if you really want to spend 500 bucks on GPU alone. Save on the parts that will be easily replaced, or rather not thrown away when you get something else. That means, you want proper monitor as it's one of the non-replaceable component of whole PC setup (good monitor can find its use for years). GTX970 is atm. bit overkill for 1920x1080, that's one my points why you should wait for GTX960 results.

Anyway if you really want to go this way, here are my tips:

  1. You don't need SSD no matter what anyone tells you, 120GB is still just for system, unusable for games for its limited space. It doesn't matter if your OS will boot in 5 or 20 seconds and SSD have limited impact on gaming performance as everything is cached in RAM anyway. (+82$)

  2. CPU cooler is nice, but it won't change much as your desired PC case is perforated like emmental cheese. Use box cooler and change it later, it won't have any problem cooling CPU as it's not overclockable anyway. (+75$)

  3. You can save a bit on PSU, Corsair CX500M or even better without M (non modular) should done it's business too (38A 12V rail so NP). (+30$)

  4. Get normal non-gaming keyboard (specially not Razer WannabePROGAMUR!!!1), some classic layout MS KB for 10 bucks. (+85$)

Here you have 272$, that you can spend elsewhere. I would throw 180$ to LCD, getting some 24" non-TN panel. 50$ to Define R4 case, because that's something that will outlast this PC internals. Oh wow, you still have at least 42$ left, then get something like SilentiumPC Fera 2 cooler for around 30$, because it would be shame to use box cooler in R4 case.

+1 to that, except the SSD part. ;)

(I'm using a 128GB Samsung 840 SSD)

Yes, SSDs are still quite expensive compared to the storage space you get with HDDs, but if you can afford it it's awesome to have one for all the day by day programms like browsers etc. (I want to work, not wait)

If he just wants a gaming PC than it's ok to go with HDDs only, because his games will start from their, so he doesn't get any out of SSDs, I start all bigger programms (games, 3D, photo- and videoediting,...) from HDD too.

SSDs won't get cheaper, but their storage amount will increase, so for now you should go with HDDs and upgrade later to have more capacity for your money.

Isn't that exactly what I said? Yes, SSD is waste of money that he should spend elsewhere. He can add SSD to the system later, without any leftover parts (current HDD will be still relevant in same PC).

If you use your computer for anything besides playing games, and you have the budget for it, an SSD is a good investment.

You should really switch that PSU back to whichever Seasonic G series you had before. Semi modular and you won't have to deal with quad 12V rails.

what are quad 12v rails? also i swapped to this power supply because its 80+ platinum

The 12V rail is split into four 12V rails that can each supply a certain amount of power. You'll need to figure out which cable is on which rail and make sure you don't overload one.

And 80+ platinum really doesn't mean anything. It's got about 3% more efficient AC-DC conversion than an 80+ gold unit. Doesn't say anything about build quality or noise or reliability.

I'd go with something like this.
The SSD and the mech keyboard are luxury items, you don't really need them so you can definitely save money if you don't get them.

Do you OC? If not, than you don't need a CPU with a K postfix nor an additional CPU cooler, except when it's cheaper than the non-K boxed version. ;)

A decent aftermarket cooler will make less noise as well if you don't like hearing a jet engine daily.

I don't recommend having a keyboard without numpad, why don't you want one? Games like Garry's Mod and Space Engineers do benefit a lot from using a numpad. In fact, Garry's Mod nearly requires you to have a numpad.

I prefer something smaller, i play garrys mod but not really the building aspect of it and i've never once played space engineers

I never used the numpad in Space Engineers O.o where exacly are you using it ?

And Garry's Mod doesn't really require that, you can use any key in most things.

I personally use the numpad to control my music player, toggle the Steam overlay and toggle video capture so you can find its uses @OP, I don't think you need a keyboard THAT small, it would feel weird.
