It's been a while since I last made one of these. I know you weren't exactly complaining, but here's another one of my trademark puzzles which always have something wrong with them.

The whole thing will end next Thursday at around 7 p.m. GMT. Off we go: http://www.itstoohard.com/puzzle/badC3icq

You've got about two more hours of staring at the hint to sit through. No slacking! )

I have failed. I think like 100 of guesses is mine. :D

If you don't want to cause me insomnia for the rest of my life - would you be so kind and make the solution public? Or at least give me another clue, it's personal, it's my nemesis, I'll slay that PUZZLE!

(which was, by the way, fantastic, thanks!)

Solution:

Solving the first ITH (which was there only to remind everyone of the basic rules) would lead you to a questionnaire asking you four questions:
1 - Which website have you come from? (Any answer containing 'steamgifts' would do);
2 - What's your name on Steamgifts? (Was first intended as a way to limit every person to just one of the three giveaways, whichever best suited their answer to the next question, but I scrapped the idea);
3 - My word, are you ugly. How do you live like that? (A multi-choice question branching off into three paths, each leading to a different giveaway based on the answer you've given);
4 - What's written above my head? (Referring to the STOP sign, which the shadow was standing beneath. Entering 'stop' would prompt an error message with an ITH link. And no, entering 'pysäkki' wouldn't work, sorry.)

Solutions to the ITH puzzles

  1. An old man in a dry month, waiting for rain.. Solvable via Google Maps... kind of. At any rate, there aren't that many cities in the desert.

  2. I keep my countenance, I remain self-possessed.. The two questions are:
    1. This 1932 film features a scene where a man dreams about seeing his own funeral. From inside his own coffin.
    2. In the short story The Masque of the Red Death people held this event to avoid death.

  3. Four rings of light upon the ceiling overhead.. Taikamaðurpípuhatussa. Taika-maður-pípu-hatu(ssa). Magic-man-top-hat(inside). Inside a magician's hat. If you're using Google Translate, it shows you that the Finnish word for hat is 'hattu' - supposedly prompting you to search for what 'hatussa' means (e.g. Wiktionary would yield a reasonable answer), with a quick look at what's an inessive case.
    The hint was supposed to point out the fact that translating words from an agglutinative language (like Finnish) into an analytic language (like English) would usually produce extra words like prepositions or pronouns, meaning that the noun case was quite important.

I loved these, even though I never did solve #3 (fun fact: Google Translate attempts to customize its translations to you, if you're logged in [in order to improve results I think]. This is a fun thing to discover if you, say, change computers 5 hours in and suddenly find you're getting very different results, calling in to question everything you've done up to that point and maybe making you give up).

I had translated "Magic-man-top-hat", but it still wasn't enough for me to figure it out. EDIT: I see now that it is revealed in the link. I get it now. :)

lol, I somehow ended up at a musician called 'that 1 Guy', who's famous for his custom-built instrument, the 'Magic Pipe' (pípu showed up as pipe, and it had nothing to do with smoking, meh). He also seems to always be wearing a hat. Guess I took the whole thing a bit too far^^
Fun puzzle nonetheless!

Now, it would only be fair if he performed with a rabbit on the drums. What a magical coincidence that would be, aww.

I'm totally on board with him on the cheese part, though. Yuck.

At one point, I got "Peace Man Top hat".

So of course the answer was Abraham Lincoln. :P :P :P

Thanks! I did not solve this one, but it was fun. And, hey, I actually won Risk of Rain out of the other one! Woohoo! Great puzzle!

P.S.: And you got me to look at "Portrait of a Lady", by TS Eliot, which was a bonus.
