Coffee is one of the few things I enjoy rather readily. Whether it's hot, cold, strong or weak, I like all types. I went to a garage sale last week and found an espresso machine for $5 and so far the results are wonderful as well. So here's a question: How do you like your coffee brewed? Why?

How Do you Brew Your Coffee?

I don't drink coffee. But I have a french press and a hand-crank coffee bean grinder at home for when my brother visits.

I do, however, love coffee flavored things, like coffee ice cream.

My parents use a capsule machine. It's fast and easy to use, it makes very good coffee, but I find it too expensive. I prefer coffee made in a moka pot.
I don't usually drink coffee, so I can take the most out of it when I truly need it. I usually drink it if there is some grappa or sambuca available, or sometimes prepare caffelatte (milk + some coffee) for breakfast, or eat it in tiramisù c:

I don't know what is all that stuff in the poll aside from the moka so i'm gonna just say: classic italian espresso at the bar, which is the standard coffee you'll get everywhere here unless you ask for something specific. At home i brew coffee with my trusty moka.
Since i drink at least 5-6 cups per day sometimes i pick a ginseng coffee to avoid drinking too much caffeine.
I don't use instant coffee (tastes like detergent) or capsule machines (they produce too much waste, sometimes the powder is stored in plastic containers that might release chemicals and capsules are expensive), but i enjoy a filtered coffee once in a while - which is that typical coffee that you see in american movies in the big ass brewing pots.

If I'm taking the time, I'll make a tripleshot espresso with freshly ground beans, otherwise I'll make filtered/drip coffee.

The whole kit:

I use my broken down Aeropress (which since the seal has failed is basically a single cup drip), double scoop of fresh ground beans, a small hunk of demerara sugar from Mauritius (I'm serious :D), and splash of half and half.
I bought an expresso machine years ago but got sick of cleaning it so it is now gathering dust in the basement. I suppose eventually some enterprising person will buy it for a song at the garage sale I may someday have.
I got a cold brew pot months ago and keep forgetting to try it out. Maybe now that the hot weather is here...

I use a pyrex measuring cup to boil the water in the microwave, add the grounds directly to it, cover the top and let it steep, and then I filter it through one of those permanent gold filters. It works pretty well.

Drip coffee with a lot of milk. Like, half milk. Helps my stomach. Otherwise, ouch.

I use an Aeropress for hot coffee, and a Hario Mizudashi pot for cold brew. Good, freshly ground beans are the secret to a great cup of coffee.

I liked coffee, but due to my chronic illnesses it's been 15+ years that I can't drink anything containing caffeine, tea included, but I usually don't drink them decaffeinated too.
Anyways I used to have it normal, like we do in Northern Italy. I don't understand all those things xD

I used to use a french press til it broke, then got a cheap drip and have been using it since. I saw an ad on youtube for those mini presses and now I'm waiting for a chance to try one.

I'm lazy, so whatever's at hand at the moment. I also try not to drink coffee every day, more like 2 or 3 times a week.

My family thinks I'm a bit crazy when I use a flashlight to make my coffee :) I just use a glass measuring cup and slowly pour off the coffee leaving the grounds. After brewing, It takes about 10 minutes to pour off because I have to slowly pour it off a couple times to get all the grounds out. If I am in a rush, I will just pour through a funnel and filter instead, but I currently only have plastic funnels and don't like using them with hot water. I am thinking about buying a glass funnel.

  • I heat 2 cups of water in a glass measuring cup in the microwave at a predetermined time that will heat it to around 205F (96C).
  • Take it out and use a thermometer to check the temp. Wait until the temp drops to 195-200F (90-93C).
  • Set a timer for 3 minutes and add desired amount of coffee directly to water. I used to use 2 heaping TBSP of 100% arabica, but now I tend to use a little less than 2 level TBSP because I am trying to cut back on the caffeine (sometimes I will just drink green tea instead).
  • Stir the coffee constantly until there is about 45 seconds left on the timer and then let it sit for the last 30-45 seconds so the grounds settle to the bottom.
  • Slowly pour off the coffee being careful to be steady and slow, especially near the end so the grounds are not pulled back up into the liquid.
  • Then I quickly rinse out the measuring cup to remove all the powder residue stuck to it and then quickly pour the coffee back into the measuring cup while slowing down at the end of the pour to keep the grounds in the cup.
  • While waiting a minute or 2 for the coffee to settle again in the measuring cup, I use a spoon and pick out any grounds that are floating on the top of the coffee since these cant be separated. They will stick to the sides of the glass on the surface. Depending on the specific coffee you are using there could be a lot of grounds or none. The coffee I have been using usually only has around 1 to 4 grounds floating. If the coffee has some foam, it can be hard to see the grounds, so I go around the outside of the cup with a small flashlight and you will see a shadow of any grounds.
  • Then I rinse out the cup and do my final pour from the measuring cup. There should be mostly just powder left in the the bottom of the measuring cup. Again you want to go very slow near the end of the pour to not pull the powder into the liquid. Stop pouring and leave a very small amount of water behind when the powder is pulled into the water and is about to be poured into your cup to make sure you don't take the powder with it.

Total time with heating the water, brewing, and pouring off is about 15 minutes. I start with 16oz of water and end up with 14-15oz after the coffee grounds absorbs some and a small amount is left behind during the last pour (the 1 oz variance is if I spill any pouring from the almost overflowing mug back into measuring cup, do this over the sink). I have to heat the coffee in the microwave a little when done because it's a bit too cool after being poured back and forth in the cups. Also, you will end up with a very small amount of powder settling to the bottom of the cup you are drinking from.

At one point I bought an espresso machine, a cappuccino maker, and a Keurig coffee maker. You could say I'm a bit of a caffeine addict.
However, 9 times out of 10, it's just easier for me to stop and get a coffee on my way out somewhere (iced coffee being my current weakness).

TLDR: I usually don't make my own coffee. Ain't nobody got time for that.
