Steam just released the first "information" about their upcoming winter event - the Snow Globes.

They added a new Badge to craft to your profile with a set of 10 cards. Right now you can obtain those cards by crafting any badge. Instead of receiving coupons you'll get any of those cards.
You can see them all listed here: Snow Globes - Steam Winter Event Cards [Beware: Shameless self promotion of my SteamCardExchange project!]

They've done the same during the summer sale where they added those cards a couple of days before the actual sale started!

Update 12/20/2013: The event started earlier today and for the first time ever they changed their pattern with 5 regular Badges and 1 Foil Badge. This time you can craft unlimited Level of Badges and we've discovered multiple versions of each so far. 21 Emoticons and 16 Backgrounds got added along with several Item's for different games you get by crafting the Snow Globes Badges.
Definitely more than I expected!

And what will we benefit from having those Snow Globes Set?

Because if it's all about self-pride or just to look cooler like all the rest of the cards previously added, then i'll pass and won't waste my money on it. I prefer to save money for actual games when the sales are on.

I just hope they add some profit from it. Like when did they in a Summer Sale a couple years ago, where you could choose your reward from a list, they had some games there also, nothing special, but they had them (Alien Breed, wasn't it?)

The achievements thingy would also be cool! I miss that.

Man... And now that i think about it, nothing beats the "coal sales", i had so much profit on those sales (that probably explains why they didn't do it again either, lol). But damn, people were crazy trading and selling coals everywhere.

Coal abuse won't come back ever.

But "craft badge, choose one Winter-themed DLC" a'la that-Summer Sale, that sounds doable. But since Valve doesn't need to fight for leader position, I guess they don't care.

OOC, but I just saw your site and was browsing. Checking Nihilumbra blew my mind. Those prices. oO And the mountain background alone is worth 47$! Strange.

Some Cards are much less common due to the game being kind of unpopular and not many cards are offered/sold on the market.

Emoticons and especially backgrounds can be even worse. With such few cards there are even less emoticons and backgrounds. Being offered for a certain price doesn't mean it got sold for that much. That is the main reason why we don't feature backgrounds & emoticons btw, that market liquidity in that segment is just too small.

Happened to me before the Summer Sale.
Thats why I completely stopped crafting after the sale and only collected cards. Now I could craft away through thirtysomething sets.
I never found the coupons really useful, so I prefer to get a card with a craft :)

So you get one snow globe card for every normal badge you craft?

It would be nice if they rewarded people who already crafted stuff. Maybe 1 card for each level crafted.

Maybe reset the card drops so that people can get more drops. It would drop the price of the cards more but at least then people would be more willing to buy more cards. I'm near level 40 and unless the price of the cards drop or I get more card drops myself, I don't see me getting more then a few of the snow globe cards.

I'd be more than surprised if they'd change their pattern of 5 regular badges and 1 Foil badge.

I love your website. I visit it a lot to see what new games have cards that I don't own already. Great stuff.

You know you're doing something wrong if people would rather have coal for their christmas event ;)

They'll never do a coal event again. People exploited it far too much last time. Although its often overused, the phrase "that's why we can't have nice things" really fits.

<obligatory corny joke time> Why haven't you named your project SteamCardsExchange? That way we would've been able to refer to it as Steam Card Sex Change! </obligatory corny joke time>

I am terribly sorry for what just happened.

A friend of mine used to run a website called Gamer's Haven. It's one of my favourite examples of why URLs should have hyphens.

The other well-known examples:
Experts Exchange
Pen Island
Therapist Network
Mole Station Nursery
Power Gen Italia

Speaking of trading cards, I just noticed that Dungeonland is a bit weird in this regard. All the games that I have seen give you half the number of cards available rounded up, but Dungeonland gives you only 1 of 7 cards. Quite peculiar.

Since Dungeonland is F2P, cards work differently there. It's like how cards work in other F2P games, like TF2.

Many people got a steam key from a bundle, which gave us the Dungeonland DLC called the All-Access Pass. Spend some more real money to purchase some more ingame items and you'll get more cards.

Dungeonland is F2P? When did that happen? (does some research.. it happened a month ago). Hmm... that explains it. Thanks for the information.

NP. I missed it until last week.

Yeah, except, every other F2P game that previously needed to be bought gave 4 card drops to the previous owners. The Dungeonland devs are the only ones that decided otherwise. That's not even getting into the fact that the F2P version is really what's better known as a "demo".

Is there any place where i can trade my duplicate Snow Globes for the ones im missing?

1) SteamTrades, banhammer!!!111
2) I can always trade them a bit.
3) SteamCardExchange has few, but single cards right now, so you'd need to give more then you'd receive.

I tried that, decided to go somewhere else. Didn't want to give me the last card it had in stock for a card it didn't have in stock at all from the same game. A 1:1 trade, but nope.

So, does anyone know what the badges you create are? Or if you get anything special for crafting them? I've got a Snow Globe #3 and I was curious if it might be worth actually using it this time. I sold them during the Summer Sale.

Best guess: it's just another badge with nothing special to show for it otherwise.

Crazy out-there dreamer mode: every badge level is one entry in a raffle with fabulous prizes. Steamboxes, early access copies of HL3, and the ever popular complete Steam pack.

The truth may be somewhere in the middle. If I was Valve and I'd cooked up this scheme, I'd make the Snow Globe crafts yield badges and vouchers that are Decidedly Not Crap (cumulative with sales, of course nothing too crazy, just 10% off or so). Watch the virtual economy explode, smile.

It mentions the Snow Globes, but also the Summer Getaway.

Obviously a bad copy-paste job, but it shows that apparently the Snow Globe cards will work the same as the Summer cards, except that you also get them for crafting badges. So anyone who focused on crafting badges right now (and/or buying the Globe cards): sorry, the gamble didn't pay off -- you might as well have waited for the sales to start and card prices to drop.

The cards are now explicitly listed as expiring January 3. As far as I know, this is the first time cards have been marked with an expiration date. It also means you won't be able to craft the Winter badges after the sales are over, unlike what happened with the Summer cards.

Huh? You get snow globe cards for crafting a badge right now. What's the difference between crafting badges now and during the sale? It was also the same during the Summer sale.

Snow Globes cards received expiration date.

Xmas event is back? Or just Valve doesn't like they need to make database only to keep all those cards on marketplace and in inventories?

Edit: wow, posts from 14 hours ago appeared after I posted this. Yay internet.
