It would be Voyage autour du monde by L.A.Bougainville (1766-1769) because of how it inspires to think about and critique society in general (Especially when you add to it the Supplement written by Diderot).
I don't know if it was translated in English though

You might also like The Eternal Frontier. It's a similar book to Guns, Germs, and Steel and The Fatal Shore.
I'll have to add The Gulag Acchipelago to my list.

Erving Goffman? Cool, I liked very much Behavior in Public Places and bought more his books. I also read Eco, usually in Italian newspapers, not his essays. his smart political comments.

some books from Latin American writers -> Julio Cortázar (especially "Rayuela (Hopscotch)" and all short-stories), Carlos Fuentes -"The Death of Artemio Cruz (La muerte de Artemio Cruz)", Gabriel García Márquez ("One Hundred Years of Solitude"), Mario Vargas Llosa ("Conversation in the Cathedral")

Oh god I remember reading One Hundred Years of Solitude for a project back when I was still in school. I forgot about the project and panic picked the book solely of the title. Big mistake. I loved the book, but making a project on it was just a huge mess with everyone having the same name
