Just did mine today.

Bought the Rockstar Bundle on Green Man Gaming this morning, already owning some of the titles. I then proceeded to activate the keys for the games I didn't own and was left with some spares. Rather than copy/pasting my newly spare keys straight into into the file I keep them in, I decided to check them first.

I often try keys for stuff I already own, looking for the "Product already owned message" just so I can see that the keys sent were for the correct games. Well, I'll not be doing that any more! Already owned Max Payne 3 and you can imagine my surprise when my Max Payne 3 key actually activated.

Turns out I had a Max Payne 3 (ROW) on my account and this new key was for Max Payne 3 (WW). Whilst I knew there were different regions, I didn't know you could actually activate 2 keys of the same game from different regions on the same account. Total waste of a key. Lol, what an idiot.

So what's the dumbest thing everyone else has done? Anyone else been as stupid as me?

I bought Trine 2 on a sale before it came into a bundle and when I wanted to check if the key from the bundle I bought was really for Trine 2 (before trading it away) it actually activated.

I also got Interstellar Marines when it was about 15 eur in the store. The trailer said that the price would only go up, but it went on sales quite often and now it's in a 1$ bundle. Not to mention the game only had online deathmatch when I got it (many months ago) and it's still in that stage.

They've been working on this game since 2005 at least (Interstellar Marine), I don't think it'll come anytime soon.

Their community manager mentioned somewhere a couple of days ago that getting it to a finished state will take at least another two-three years.

You can activate multiple keys if they differ in someway, eg. different languages, which may not be obious.

Also, if one is a Steam gift, and the other is a steam key. Been there, done that.

I do that sometimes too. You can never let a good deal pass. (Far Cry 3 deluxe for $7.50? Sold!)

Yes. Totally this. Now all we need is to upgrade our computers...

Why you would buy Far Cry 3 Deluxe, when Far Cry 3 + Deluxe upgrade is cheaper :P

I totally did this and saved whole cent.

In Europe, it costs the same.

Except prices only go down. You only risk the game being removed from the Steam store. Although, if you upgrade your computer and aren't patient enough to wait for the next sale then you made the right choice buying early.

Did that with 3D Mark. My PC sucks, and I know it won't be any use to me. So I gave it away here XD

Long time ago, when I was a newbie on steam, bought an XCOM collection to give away here, I tried to activate it to check if the key is correct, I was thinking I would get a message asking me if I was sure I wanted to activate it. Instead, I activated all games in the collection, on a throwaway account I don't even use.

Felt so bad that I bought another copy of the collection to giveaway here to make myself feel better lol.

Edit: Oh and Pre-ordered Aliens: Colonial Marines for $45

hm.. stupidest thing i've done on Steam:

I had 2 gift copies of Portal 2 in my inventory, and some random guy added me and said i'd get Steam Wallet money if i gave them to him. I did, and he unfriended / blocked me, without another word.
this happened maybe 2 years ago, and i felt really stupid.. and sad.

I traded 2 hats in TF2, which were only 1 in the game. (Untradeable,Uncraftable). It cost a lot,but i sold them for a 3 keys or smth like that. Anyway, i am not crying about this, cuz i got a lot of exp from that moment and also i beleive if you lost smth, you will find something!

I'm sure we've all done this, just new to steam & PC gaming & already have done this twice, first was The Ship while a bundle with the ship was on at the same time but wasn't aware of the whole bundle thing & second was Guacamelee! Gold Edition & Soundtrack which I thought what was the chance of it getting bundled again any time soon them bam the next week or two later. Still waiting for the rest of my computer components to arrive so can start playing some games on steam =D

You unfriended me and blocked me for no reason! I often ring at your lobby, and you do not answer, but I know you are home because I can see your lights on from my place! Look, I have now lost half a pound, and I got a job that will pay $1,546 a day just by browsing the Internet -- I know because it was written on this Internet ad. So, find me at Steam chat tonight?

Sorry if that's insensitive, but why won't you live for long?

I played Morrowind, and didn't finish it. It was worth it (I still plan on finishing it, but who knows?). So, regardless, if you like the game, play it even if you won't finish it. It has some nice side quests. :)

i told him i cant give him free stuff, after he bugged me for more than 20 minutes i told him that in reality im a steam support member and i will give him a few free games when he gives me his account information ... he didnt give it to me, instead i became banned on steam :D after contacting support they unblocked me without telling me what i have done wrong. but im 99,9% sure its this incident

Yeah, impersonating a Valve employee and asking someone for their account details would do it. If they unbanned you, count yourself lucky. They were no obligation at all to do that, regardless of your intent. ;)

I bought quite a few DLC for 2 games that I thought I had keys for, since the DLC were on sale and thought I should get them. I later realised I didn't have the base games (gave them away but forgot).

I still have the DLC for one of those, by the way, since the game has been removed from the store >.<
