Not sure where to ask this but, I won a give away and was given the key. All fine and dandy. But when I activated it was for a different game than what was advertised. Now, I imagine this was an honest mistake. The person is a level 9 user I doubt it was a scam or on purpose.

My issue is...am I now screwed from ever winning the game that was supposed to be linked to the key? Since to Steamgifts I have "already won" the game even though the key wasn't right.

UPDATE

Well, guess an update? I reached out to the give away creator five days ago. Then again two days ago with no response. I'll give it a full week then I guess there is nothing I can do but mark not-recieved. Which is not the outcome I wanted but I dunno what else to do.

Profile says they were on 7 hours ago but didn't reach back to me, and I saw them online playing a game at one point. Again I do NOT think is person is a scammer by any means, I just wish they'd talk to me.

Tell the creator of the giveaway that the key is for another game.

Mark as not received and contact the gifter. By the rules they HAVE to provide the game advertised. Happened t me once before.

they meant if they want a properly earned "received" mark they do "have" to.

Contact the giveaway creator and explain the situation. The responsibility to provide the correct game lies on them, not you. If, after seven days, the giveaway creator does not deliver a solution, you are allowed to mark as "not received". Whatever you do, do not mark as received if you did not receive and activate the exact correct game to your account.

I had encountered this problem before. I & the giveaway creator have a little chat & I suggest to contact the support to change the game to the one I activated. Problem solved.

Well, the main problem is Usako activated different key/game; so when the support change the creator's game giveaway to match to the one that Usako activated it will solve the problem for both Usako & the creator.
At least that's how I solved my problem back then.
I think it's the best solution for both winner & creator, rather than asked for the new "right" key.

Well, yeah, I think you're right. Giving Usako the correct key will be an easier problem solver in his/her case.

Yeah, that would be true if she was a douche alright. If she simply had no concerns that the person giving a game away for free made an easy mistake, you'd be right.

SteamGifts uses the Steam API to determine what games you own. You are not screwed out of winning the game, but I think the giveaway creator will try to make it right.

Usako will not have issues with normal giveaways on SG, but will be locked out of giveaways with SGTool if they have a check for non-activated wins.

Considering the Giveaway creator is level 9, they'll probably make it right.
It also makes me think SGTools GA creators also need to make a default rule for "No GAs marked as Not Received"

We have Not Activated, now we need Not Sent.

Not if you mark as "not received", as is the correct procedure in this situation.

Only if he marks the win as "received," which he should not do.

Yeah, that's my main worry. I'm not overly concerned with getting or not getting the game at hand. I technically DID get a game, even if not the right one.

If you have clicked on the "received" button press it again. Then it is switched off.
You only confirm "received" when you have actually activated the game you entered for.
Contact the GA creator. If it is who I think it is then it is an honest mistake and will be corrected.
If after 7 days you still have not received the correct game then you click "not received"

I haven't hit the "received" button yet. I posted a comment on the giveaway itself and on their profile so now I'll just wait and see what happens. I'm not even overly concerned about getting the game itself, it wasn't wishlisted, but I just don't want to mess up any SGTools stuff.

Oh. It sounded like you had already pressed "received".
As long as you've told the creator it's ok.
sgtools cann't check if you have won a GA if you never confirmed receiving it.

Were you the only winner?
I would say in this case since it was an accident, and you did get a game, you should offer for the giveaway to be deleted.
Unless of course he can supply the intended game without going further into his pocket. Then two games for you :O

If the giveaway creator wants to handle it that way I'm fine with it. I do believe it was an honest mistake so I'm not mad. I just wasn't sure the best way to handle the situation but I reached out to them, now to wait.

I'm a newbie here, but I'm sure that the creator will either : give you the proper key if he still has it/ make an arrangement with the support team to change the GA title (if he mistakenly gave away the proper key to someone else.) If profile message don"t work, you can also try emailing him. Just a little wait and everything will be fixed up ;)

Talk to the giveaway creator. Just taking the advice here from people as though you're somehow entitled to this free game isn't right imo. If the creator made an honest mistake, don't be an asshole about it. You could be cool about it and see if support will change the giveaway. Or you could tell the creator to buy you another game for free if he wants his 100%

This is tangentially related but what do you do when this happens in a trade? I traded for a standard edition of a game but was given the gold edition, which was given away for free and I already had. I was pretty confused about what to do and the trader didn't realise she had done anything wrong, but I asked for another cheap key and she gave it to me and, wouldn't you know it, the exact same thing happened. I let her off the hook and just kept the keys but it was really frustrating. The worst part is I wouldn't even have traded for it if I had known I already had the gold edition, nor would I have asked for the key. This was on barter, by the way.

That's a common scam, and one that relies on people not providing negative feedback due to trying to guilt traders into excusing the matter as a mistake (thus not leaving a trail for future traders to reference, allowing it to perpetuate unchecked). Unless it's explicitly stated that you're trading for free games, never count free games as acceptable (if for no other reason than that they're so incredibly common for use in that kind of bait-and-switch scam tactics).

While the individual in question may in fact not have intentionally scammed you, the burden of proving that they're not a scammer- and of obliging the parameters of the trade- is always on the individual who couldn't complete the trade as originally agreed.

That said, in relation to the broader matter, are you certain the standard and gold editions activate differently? Make sure to cross-reference steamdb, if you're not certain [as, in the circumstance where the already-owned gold edition is a package, Steam client'll simply report you already own the product when you attempt to activate it, regardless of the edition you're attempting to activate.]

It's very possible that there was just a simple key mixup somewhere. When you've got a lot of keys, or make a lot of giveaways, then that can very easily happen. If they can't replace the key with the right one, and you still think it's a honest mistake, you can let them delete the giveaway.

Did you also post a reply on the giveaway page stating the situation? If so, then there is nothing else you have to do or can do at the moment except for waiting for the response. I would make sure to let them know (you) will (and have the right to) mark the giveaway as not received once the 7 day mark reaches so as to raise their attention and in case the creator requests received feedback from support.

For the time being, just let it go. Asking for rule clarification is entirely fine, but past that, publicly agonizing over the issue will only give an impression of you overly badgering the GA creator: Specifically since, as has been repeatedly indicated, not only do people have lives outside of SG, but online status can occur for countless reasons [eg, mobile use of SG, family/idling use of Steam] that don't also permit responding to certain SG matters.

The most polite order of affairs is, by my considerations, to immediately contact them on SG through the giveaway as soon as you notice an issue [which also leaves a log of sorts of the circumstances for staff to reference], then at about 5 days in, attempt to contact them off of SG. On the start of the 7th day, contact them again on SG (or Steam, if you have them friended) informing them that you're going to have to mark as Not Received- then if necessary, mark it as such, and leave the matter be until they contact you.

But whatever your approach, it's inadvisable to pester the GA creator with excessive or rude communication, as that may disincline them from anything remotely resembling a timely response.

That all said, long delays and mixed up or invalid keys are infrequent, but common enough that they're not of special concern. Don't over-stress the matter. Likewise, other than you possibly needing to start entering giveaways for the game again, you're not going to take any penalties from an outcome where you have to mark not received, so long as you do make sure to mark it as such.

In other words, let back on stress over it- it may not be an ideal situation, but there's nothing more to do about it.

I've contacted them, politely with no luck. I was hoping for advice that didn't result in marking "not received" because I feel bad doing that but it is what it is I guess. The other giveaway winner who I'm assuming got the key meant for me and I got the key meant for them already marked "not received" so I just didn't want to add to that...
