Was wondering why the games have same update size (183.6 MB)
edit: turns out to be some interface "bug", i guess.
A game does need to download 183.6 MB update, it's just the 0 byte games somehow used the same numbers.

Most of these updates are just shared redistributable updates and not real game updates.
The end result should be that you need to download less content going forward. You should see only a few real downloads of any size and the remainder should be size 0 updates.
This is not communicated well in the client and will be looked at.

Check my other reply to you below, but I can confirm that I got 30+ GB of extra free space after my 302 updates, and that each update took just a second or two. 0 bytes downloaded, and then just the HDD doing some work.
Report back to us when your first download is done, maybe I already had the new shared redist library. I should mention that I had restarted Steam before I got these 300+ updates, and that I had some downloads before restarting Steam, so I probably got my new shared redist files then.

where exactly IS the new shared library? - mini metro is listed in the client at over 1gb, but theres no redist's in its folder (which comes to only ~250mb).
thankfully, each update appears to be 0kb again. I also made sure I restarted steam before checking the others, so hopefully all good now!

Steam is making room for Ape Out ;-p

That will be the total size for all the executables being downloaded to the shared folder, once you've got those all the other updates should be near instant as it will pretty much just be a case of deleting them from the individual installation directories.

THANKYOU!
but... for me its exactly 503.1mb per game - all 80 of them!
I actually uninstalled mini metro and am reinstaling it now - rather than the ~250mb download it should be, its 653
O____o
Edit: for anybody else experiencing this, after reinstalling mini metro and restarting steam, all other downloads were 0kb in size

Thanks, I was wondering what the heck I did to cause it.
Saved me quite a bit of much needed space as well!

Thanks for the heads up, that is good news.
edit: recovered about 3.7 GiB across two drives. I wonder why there's no Update All button, I had to click each one manually.
As for anyone wondering why I have 600+ games installed, I have 6 TB of storage space and use the computer mainly for gaming, but at a place where I for a long time had a limited connection that would only allow for 5 GB of downloads per month. So - I filled up the storage space with most of my Steam games when I had the computer at a place with access to a good fibre connection, and then just kept the games installed (even after I got a real connection) since I don't need the space for anything else. Also - nice to be able to play almost any game whenever I want without having to wait for downloads :)
^ Having to go out of one's way explaining why the computer is set up the way it is so to keep know-it-alls from questioning one's mental health.

In a discussion where I found the answer to the question, one person wrote that they were waiting for 400 updates, and 4-5 people were like:
"dude, whoever has 400 games installed"
"yeah, what the fuck dude"
"400, lol, I just have the one game I'm playing installed"
etc
I figured most people don't have many games installed from those comments, so thought I would explain it right away to avoid the same comments here as well as the guy got on the other forum.

Haha I actually wonder about the people who only have 1 game installed. Are you so single minded that you're happy to only play one game at a time? Does the mood to play a different genre never strike? Once you've beaten a game do you never ever go back to try and get the last achievements? Do you not have kids who like to play different games as well?
These are just some of the reasons why I have over 400 games installed, and honestly, I would get so bored only having 1 game to play at a time.

When I activate keys from a bundle or whatever I basically install every game I have any intention of every playing (or trying), so I filter by "Installed" in Steam when I'm trying to find something to play. Yeah I have hundreds installed, too. Across a couple computers.

thanks, was wondering what was happening
but as they all finished immediately (as it's only deleting) I didn't waste another thought (until I read it here)

About damn time Steam is finally consolidating COMMON redistributable.
I guess that means SteamCleaner will no longer be needed to do the clean up work that Valve wouldnt do for years!

lol, I always deleted those files after I finished the game.

I wish that would happen to Half-Life 2 --> Half-Life 3

I noticed today that lots of my games have update, so I queued about 5 and noticed they all have exactly the same update size, which was 528.8 MB. Needless to say I wasn't happy about that, because the idea of having to download over 500 MB per game for all of those games is nuts. It was amusing though when a small indie game somehow got this update that's bigger than the game itself lol.
However once one game downloaded the update, the rest all turned into 0 byte updates.

Wondering? Pretty sure it's necessary nowadays. I have 1TB drive just for games. You install 3-5 coop/multi titles to have ready for friends can play, a few singleplayer games to go through campaign, all of them are 30-50 GB each... if they are open world that you play for a longer time, they are even 60+ GB and... no HDD space left.
On topic, I really like they finally did this. There's no need for users to install these files 1000 times over and over, it's been asked these libraries get switched to "install once and forget" time and time again.

Thanks. Also hats off to Valve for actually doing something good for a change. It needs to be said. Hope they keep that up.
All mine appeared as 730mb updates. Safe to say I was quite shocked just how long I would need to update my library. Glad it's a display error (they popped up just before going to sleep).

For anyone with many games installed that are wondering why half their library is in the Steam update/download queue.
Many games have a "_CommonRedist" folder with .NET, Visual C++ and PhysX files. The contents of those folders are being deleted with these updates, and Steam games will instead use a shared location for these files, instead of every game having its own set of them.
As someone with 652 games installed, this meant I had 302 updates to go through, but each game "update" removed an average of slightly above 100 MB per game affected, so that meant I got over 30 GB of extra storage space freed up!
