You're getting closer to death every moment, it's not like you're suddenly one year closer than you were yesterday. Might as well have an occasional party to break the slow march.

Think of it like a long and arduous journey where once a year you get a day of rest when you can treat yourself to fun things and get good wishes from others (and possibly some things from them as well). That's why the day is happy, not because it marks the time passed on the journey but because it's an excuse to have a small break. Deciding that the day isn't happy and isn't worth celebrating only means that you remove the excuse to enjoy the day and makes the journey harder.

And as others have said, it's also a celebration of having survived so far.
