For now anyways. But for future? I bet it will be necessary.
I wanted to learn from my past mistake, and differs from 3 years ago when I built my pc, I took part that cover the standarts of that current time for games. (That was 2012). And now, it's the beginning of 2016, new releases are made and going to come, so I took it step ahead and took care of it.

True, planning in advance is wise. 32GB RAM just seems overkill in my opinion, though. But anyway, you won't need any more for quite a while, so that's good I guess. :D

Yep :P
And actually I wanted to go for 16GB, but then my thoughts went further.
If I took a motherboard with a max memory of 64 and there are 4 pci-e slots, then I made 64:4 which is 16.
From that I realised that to fully use my motherboard memory without losing, I need to shall do put 16GB stick in every slot.
And how is that related in taking 32 you say? nothing :D
I just saw a single 16GB stick for 228$, and then scrolled down a bit and saw a kit of 16GBx2 for 382$ so I figured why not? It's worth the price.

Not mentioning your old PC, you either botched the configuration back then or really didn't see the point in upgrading. Talking 2012, an i5 or i7 CPU from back then today still is more than plenty to play all the games and pair it with 1 - 2 nice GPUs.

I really hope the power lines are good in your region, as a surge or an overcurrent will absolutely fry the power supply and the components with it. Single rail power supplies with such a high wattage are ticking time bombs. A 1000W PSU would've been more than sufficient, even when upgrading to three 980Tis (which I would never, ever recommend).

Also I hope your motherboard doesn't break too soon, as motherboards that are packed so chock-full with "features" and connections nobody needs tend to break much more often than cheapter ones.

Also, why didn't you take a 1440p 144hz monitor? I mean, full hd? The second 980Ti will be like "dude, I'm bored" xD
And I hope you spent a little on audio, too. SO incredibly many people with beast pcs out there and crippled audio systems. The discrepancy is irritating.

Anyway, I don't mean to bother you, just speaking my mind and concerns. In my general experience in my 7-year career as an IT support for both private and professional customers, I can tell you that a huge bunch of people who do buy such a PC do it only once. After 1 - 2 years they often realize they've spent far too much money and could've achieved their goals with about half the budget. They also constantly tend to find problems that aren't really there or nitpick too much, because the general mindset of those spending that much is "I've spent so much, this has to be perfect the way I want it".

Anyway, have fun with the machine and the bragging rights. It's your (hard)-earned money you just spent, so you deserve to have some good time with it :)

Thanks for your honest reply!
I do aware of the 'issues' that might appear in my way.
I wouldn't do all that if I wasn't ready for it or not having the right knowledge to handle it.
My experience in gaming and in PC's in general is as big as yours and I know how setup everything to work the right and best way.
Of course that I would never thought that if I spend more money it means that I it should work perfect.

Question 1: Why SLI 980 Ti when a Titan X is hundreds of dollars cheaper, gives noticeably better performance by itself, needs less juice, and doesn't suffer from potential SLI compatibility problems on games?
Question 2: Was there any reason for that RAM instead of a simple 2400 MHz kit at CL12? Because, well, this is what your motherboard can do with it with that CPU: http://www.guru3d.com/articles_pages/asus_z170_deluxe_review,15.html (Essentially: nothing.)
Question 3: Why 1500 W PSU when you could hardly even fit in a third GPU, and even then, you barely would need 1200 W – but 1000 W is more than enough for a dual-GPU setup.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

A1: I thought about taking Titan X, but it is not worth it as 980TI goes as high as the titan x does.
So if anything, and if I was already gonna pay for the titan x, so why wouldn't I just do 980TI SLI to get even much more power?
A2: You link shows that it achieves a high scores, am I missing something? I have 3000HZ
A3: Just went on a higher one, though it would be more than enough as I am probably going to do something in the future so I didn't take no risks on taking something that might not fit for future plans

Reply 1: But this is what I'm referring to: you don't get more power from a 980 Ti SLI; the Titan X is better in gaming than two 980 Tis put together. And it also has the same amount of VRAM (not that it is relevant outside of rendering for the foreseeable future).
Reply 2: It shows that the difference between a 3200 MHz RAM setup and a 2133 MHz one is less than 3%, barely within marginal error. Current CPUs and many motherboards are not really capable of running memory at so high clock rates over one stick. If you can, run a MemTest on it to see if your mobo handles the memory at the supposed frequency, otherwise with that latency, you probably just bought four sticks that perform worse than a similar set at 2400 MHz CL12.
Reply 3: Those must be some big plans since your rig is consuming now what… 500-520 W?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

A1: I still think it's not worth it because 980TI gets as high as he does. TITAN X will just give you few more frames to your picture, that's it.
Making a two way SLI of 980TI is for me almost the same of doing TITAN X SLI. So for my considerations it's much more worth it.
But it could be fought over for days now, it's pretty controversial..
A2: Oh okay, no I can tell actually and you are right! Just to mention that at the store I bought these pc part has offered 16GB DDR4 2133MHZ at the same price as the 3000MHZ one. Well then, it means nothing I guess. As you said it's the same.
A3: Yeah I'm planning to add two more monitors, one at a time, plus maybe one more 980TI to make it 3 way SLI.
I took care of it when I took that motherboard that supports 2/3 WAY SLI

If the news about the DX12 performance of the Maxwell architecture cards are true, then for about 2-3 years without further investment.
Not counting a possible pump failure in the cooling system. Anything can malfunction, naturally, but probably that has the highest chance in there.

Unfortunately $'s spend do not equal longevity. If Intel (or any other manufacturer/products) drops this socket 5 years from now due to developments a 2000$ PC would have done the same job :P

They may drop it in less than 2 years, depending on the upcoming architecture. Although it should not be such a huge issue, as a gaming rig nowadays is hardly limited by CPU. A 6700K should power a gaming rig for at least 4 more years, maybe even more. (Heck, I just started to feel the age of my Phenom II X4 965 in games, and that thing is quite old…) This what I'm gambling on too as I plan to build a rig around it in May, but with 16GB memory and a simple R9 380 (hoping to change it at latest in mid-2018 for a fully DX12 card).

It's hard to justify such expenses (let alone $5k worth) without having some serious guilt trips when the money could be spent on doing fun things and making memories with children instead.

Might be, planning to do 3 WAY SLI in future with more monitors

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

So what? :P Monitors have their own power supply and even a 3-way-SLI will under no circumstances consume more than 650-750W (maybe 850-900W with OC) while at full load. Beside that, you should remember that your PCIe lanes are limited.

Stay on your 2-way-SLI and upgrade your cards more frequently to keep getting new technologies and features instead of wasting money on a system that will be outdated after 12-16 months after its purchase.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Thanks for the advice :)
So you are saying that sticking to 2 WAY SLI is the best? just be replacing the gpu's to the new ones?
And how much PSU would you recommend me to get from the first place, about 1000~1050 is alright?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Yes, a 2-way-SLI system is the best compromise in my opinion. You'll get good performance scaling (compared to a single GPU), the power consumption will be relatively reasonable, you can connect 3+ monitors to the rig (why would anyone need more than that?! :D), and the possibility to have micro stutter issues (search that up on Google, it's a common multi GPU issue) will be minimized.

When it comes to power supplies I always recommend one company: Seasonic. They are relatively expensive, but they come with a 7 year warranty and have an extremely high build quality. Companies like Corsair often re-lable Seasonic PSU's and sell them as their own (which you can see for yourself when you compare pictures of different models from Seasonic and Corsair). And if you happen to have issues with your PSU, one of the companies CEO's will take care of your problem - yes, their RMA rate is that low that one of the bosses will help you out! :D

I'd recommend something like a Seasonic Platinum Series 860W (SS-860XP2) or a Seasonic Platinum Series 1050W (SS-1050XP3), however the 860W one will do the job just fine and will save you some money. Both are Platinum Efficiency certified.
