Unreal World looks interesting, I'll give it a try, thanks! Graphics don't really matter to me in the long run. Actually, after reading your post, I'd like to recommend you a title myself: Kingdom of Loathing. It's a MMO/rpg parody game. :3

See, I don't really like realistinc graphic in games. So for me, an "ugly" game = game with modern graphic :D
If I wanted to see something that looks life-like, I would glance out of my window instead of launching a game!
I have it like this with comic books and drawings, too. I just prefer the simple, stylized look over the super-realistic one :)

Yeah, I'm not too big on uber realistic graphics. Sure they're nice, but at some point those games start looking the same because of it. I prefer stylish graphics. I think that's why I love sprite based games so much, cause you're not gonna have "good" graphics, so you make up for it with a great style of graphics.
That been said however, it still comes down to having great gameplay and/or story. I could love your game's style but if the gameplay and/or story suck, welp, I'm probably not gonna play for too long.

Everyone, it's either graphics or game play and story because you can't have both.
Graphics are important too, this whole hippie uprising bullshit is the result of publishers pushing for bigger numbers in terms of visual quality while ignoring other aspects of the game because they can't be quantified in an easy way. So obviously gamers, being the reasonable people they are, have declared war on graphics to stick it to the man.

For me, the only case where visuals turn more important then gameplay and story, is when the graphics are buggy. Meaning when they run like crap and therefore distract me from the game. You can give me Pac-Man graphics for all I care. But if they stutter all the time, then that failure is going to be way more important to me than anything else in the game.
So it's not really the graphics themselves that are important to me, but rather how competent the devs are in the implementation of the visuals. This is why I find games like Oblivion (before the "stutter removal" mod), GTA IV and Watch Dogs to be total crap. I don't care about the quality of the graphics when you look at screenshots. I can tune down the detail levels to absolute minimum if need be, I don't care. But they have to run nicely. And without glitches and bugs. Otherwise I turn into an AVGN wanabe.

i dont care about graphics unless its impossible to see, story line is my favorite things about games especially horror. I have a few friends that hate bad graphic games and i dont blame them because the got beefy pc's, but in my opinion the story line is the best thing in games.

Sign me in. Gameplay and story outclass graphics many times over.
And quite often gameplay is more important than story, because a bland story with great gameplay is better than a great story with mind numbing and nerve wracking gameplay.

Gameplay comes first. I'll accept inferior graphics as long as they don't get in the way of that. Story depends on the type and design of game. It's more important in RPGs than it is in action platformers for example. Unless the game really is designed to tell a story, like Bastion or Bioshock, where in the level design and gameplay mechanics there's deliberate choices to be found to support the story.

I finally finished Avernum: Escape the Pit after taking a big break from it, but I have to say that's definitely among my favorite games on Steam, of course there are other games that obviously didn't have a big budget on graphics (To The Moon comes to mind) but I think Avernum showcases that sort of thing...using lots of text to replace special graphical effects and what not. It's also nice because it lets you use your imagination a lot more (which I personally like)

I mainly care about gameplay first, then story and graphics are about the same priority. I really don't care for graphics since my computer is so slow I just run everything at minimum settings, sometimes on 640x480 if I need to.
So gameplay and optimization are actually what I care about most.

I've never cared for graphics in videogames.
I don't care much about gameplay either, as long as I find the characters or plot interesting.
The main thing I care for is the music. If a game's soundtrack isn't good, there's a good chance I will not even try to play it.

I can tolerate bad story if gameplay is good, i can tolerate bad gameplay if story is good, doesn't matter if graphics can't be on par but it's always a nice bonus (unless it's hurting my eyes, like weird colors or ASCII "graphics").
Well... graphics can be important too, if it adds something to the gameplay or story (Dead Space for example, Isaac and his whole "wife" thing isn't that interesting, gameplay is just aim and shoot as usual, but the surroundings are telling it's own story: what happened here, what is happening here and what will happen to you if you won't be careful. Atmosphere is what makes it one of my favourite games and graphics is a big part of it).

Gameplay above all, specifically random-gen and end-game contents :> I care 0 for story and graphics equally :P Some of my favorite games (Terraria, Monster Hunter, Dwarf Fortress) have virtually no storyline at all.. To me a storyline only cages the content of the game into the requirements of the storyline ("Okay, story's done, GAME is done! Onwards, to sequel!").. That, and a game that relies heavily on story ends up pretty worthless if that storyline falls on its face.

I love mount and blade warband and it pretty crappy looking but the gameplay for me at least makes up for it. I also enjoy how modifiable the engine is. But mount and blade II banner lords seem to be changing the ugly part to a nice look game.

Story is sometimes important, but half the time I play games I'm also watching a movie at the same time...

On my current computer, I have played more Shining Force than almost any other game. It might only have 16 bit graphics, but I love the strategy involved in laying out your troops, etc.
And for online games, my favorites are Kingdom of Loathing and a text based game called Ankhet.

I'm of the opinion the graphics are much like icing on a cake. If the cake is poorly made and tastes like crap, the best icing isn't going to make it taste good. If the cake is well made and tastes good, then the icing can make it even better, but it can still taste great without it.
The same goes with a game, the gameplay and story is going to be like the cake. If it's no good, the graphics won't make it good. You can have a good game without good graphics. You can't have a good game with shoddy gameplay for sure, and depending on the genre a boring story as well.

I never had a great PC so more or less got used to play games on lowest(especially on my 2 years old craptop). If I enjoy the gameplay I will prolly stuck to the game for quite sometime(Kingdoms of Almaur ~ 100 hours on pirated and Origin, but got it on steam too).
Sound is really important for me.If it doesnt fit the game or a specific moment I either get confused (oh look i'm fighting a boss but the music make me sleepy) or just leave game but if the game got the right doses of nice gameplay and sound(currently hooked up to Firefall no matter how grindy and buggy it is atm) can play it for hours with no trouble.
Story more or less is just the last step if I want to play the game or not though if I play purely for the story would like the game to be short(To The Moon).
Optimization and Graphics matters only to see will I be able to run the game smoothly or with fps drop just on crowded places. But still if game is doing fine on first 3 points I will keep playing the game even with 3-5fps(Guild Wars 2 big WvW or boss fights.)

While gameplay always matters over graphics, let's put it on a different perspective. Graphics alone don't make a good game, but definetively can make it better. I see every day way too much crappy games with "retro" graphics as a justification for not being able to draw a decent sprite and for every legit retro-styled game, like VVVVVV, i see ten McPixel waiting behind the corner.
It's like selling a broken CRT television by saying that it's "vintage": It's not vintage, it's just junk. We're in the so-called next generation and we could play old style platformers with high definition graphics like Rayman Origins, but instead we get tons of "8 bit homages" that are slowly becoming generic indie platformers just like the "generic gritty shooters" that plagued our shelves during last years.

I think you made a valid point.
I really dislike super-modern graphic, but using clearly half-assed sprites and claiming they're "design choice" isn't exactly the best thing, either.
