There is a lot of pain right now in America. I'm seeing psyche medications get denied that were previously covered. I received a text message Sunday night that my healthcare coverage would be terminated effective immediately. Over 200,000 federal workers were fired. The job market is rough and I'm in a real bind. I have a dental procedure tomorrow that was previously covered get denied today. I'm having trouble finding an affordable healthcare plan that not only covers my doctors, but my medication. This is a real mess. We were given no grace period or warning. I hope you all are doing well, but if you share my experiences, let's talk about it.

Our warning came pre-election when they said what they were gonna do over and over and nobody believed them.

I'm sorry you're feeling the weight of this.

This is about as OFF-TOPIC as it comes, please change your category.
As for healthcare, in our country the majority of us have to pay for our dental work.

Sorry that you have to experience that.

I have a very elderly aunt in Ohio who also is in trouble now, just that she also voted for it. And she still doesn't get that her fate is partially her responsibility, she only wonders why God his testing her so much now.

Yeah i been through the hell of getting sleep medication prescribed (because a bunch of people abusing them in the 90's they make it almost impossible for people in this era), off and on and off and on, i might be getting something hopefully for the rest of my life now, but it took a year, and it's still not close to what i had.

Good luck in finding an answer.

What a nightmare. I'm sorry you are a victim of the "ragequitting democracy speedrun" that is happening... I am thankfully not dealing with it now but did spend some time uninsured a few years ago in-between jobs.

TLDR: I would reach out to your doctors/dentists/pharmacist and tell them the situation. They may be able to help you out or direct you to someone else who can. Especially if you have any kind of long-term relationship with them.

If you use an independent (sole proprietor mom & pop) pharmacy they will have a lot more flexibility on pricing versus the chains. At chain pharmacies a discount card like GoodRX can save a lot of money (sometimes cheaper than your insurance copay used to be). Sam's Club or Walmart pharmacy have a lot of the most common generics super cheap. I believe you can use Sam's Club or Costco pharmacy even if you're not a paying member, though that may vary state to state. Cost Plus Pharmacy online is cheap, too.

Definitely shop around as retail prices at pharmacies can vary wildly. CVS and Walgreens are usually the most expensive in my experience but it really just depends on the specific medication. At one point my wife was picking up parts of her prescription from 3 different pharmacies to save money. You may need to have them run the insurance price, the GoodRX price, and the uninsured price to see which is actually cheaper....

If your medication has no generic form, it is probably super expensive, but often on those the drug manufacturer will have a discount program that lets you get it for free or extremely cheap for a period of time (9 months or a year typically). They can be real jerks about the qualifications though. If you have insurance that doesn't cover it, that counts has "having insurance" and will disqualify you from getting the discount with some of those companies.

My wife takes a medication every 28 days that is $900+ retail. She talked to her doctor and her doctor gave her some free samples. They made it clear that this could not be a permanent arrangement, but it was enough to get us by a few months until I could find a new job with a new insurance provider who covered it ($900 went down to $40 copay, thankfully.)

On the dental side, there are some dental societies that will perform free or greatly reduced cost work on people who do not have insurance or who are otherwise unable to provide for themselves. I think that is very regional specific though. Your dentist may be able to refer you to someplace, or work something out with you. Most of those procedures are highly profitable so they have some room to work with you on it, if they want to. If you live near the Mexican border you can cross over and get expensive dental procedures (like implants) done for a fraction of the cost the US dentists charge. My coworker got a whole mouthful of implants in Mexico for the price I paid for one in the US...
