First Darksiders was a massive grindfest, incredibly repetitive but it had some charm and interesting enough characters to make you move forward. On the other hand, the part in the tower will completely kill any desire to play the game as it's tedious as hell!

DS1 isn't the most celebrated game, not even close, and it obviously have some faults, but the game shouts unique at you from every angle you look at it, with a great blend of gameplay elements, some sweet music (especially DS2), good story and great characters (kickass voiceovers), and an incredible art style (even though from a technical level it's not CryEngine or anything. Saying that it's dull just simply isn't true. If he'd say he didn't like it, because genre or something, I'd say okay. Saying it's dull however is dumb.
You can say it's Zelda clone, it's God of War clone (which is bullshit, Devil May Cry came sooner), but as a mesh it's unique.

Depands on what you like. Darksiders is a pretty linear experience - so if you enjoy free-running you're not gonn'a like it - but if you like brawler/slasher games (sadly there's so little of them for PC :( ) like God of War, Devil May Cry, Bayonetta etc - you gonna have a lot of great time :) Just keep in mind that playing Darksiders on mouse+Keyboard instead of controller pretty much sucks (as most of brawler/slashers). If you don't own controller don't even bother buying it.

Love your comment. Too many people just state that they like or dislike games without the caveats (linear in gameplay) and comparisons. I, for one, love games like simple, straightforward games and smash 'n' bash types like God of War, so this helps me tremendously.

Most people base their opinion on how they felt about DS 1.
Thing is, it's a bit of a divide, it's either you like it, or you don't.
We'd need some extra info on your part if we are to help you decide.
Your likes and hates regarding games, why you are contemplating to buy this in the first place. Things like that.

I have played both. DS2 has a lot more to it than DS1. Both are good, DS2 has a little too much "find the hidden items" in it (something along the lines of 100 coins, 40 pages, 72 stones, bunch of relics, scrolls, etc. DS2 adds Prince of Persia elements to it. It's also more stable on Steam.

If you want to get it, make sure you have a controller. Its a horrible PC port.

I have to agree with TartFlavor quite a bad port and if yuo don't have a decent Controller you going to hate it.
