I just got home from work and was on my PC for maybe 10 minutes and all of a sudden there's a high pitch ringing noise coming from my PC. Anybody know some potential reasons for what it's doing this? When I turn it off the noise goes away.

Edit: I just shut down my PC and switched the power switch at the back off. I left it off for 5 minutes and turned it back on. The sound is gone. For now. Hoping it doesn't return. :(

Edit 2: Sound came back for 5 minutes then went away.

Different people are talking about different noises (all of them annoying) that computers make. It would be great if we could compile sound samples of these various noises all in one place. Here are three, to start.

Coil Whine
Worn Hard Drive (most likely)
Vibrating Fan
Vibrating Speaker
Heatsink Fans (server heatsinks & fans are usually noisy)

There are also varying vibration noises (such as the infamous '8 kHz whine') you can hear. Just listen to this sound spectrum to identify the wavelength of the vibration you're hearing.

Thank you for those videos. None of them really sound like it, except for the vibrating speaker video. The noise from my computer is a bit more shriller than that though.

Good news is that this morning when I woke up, I turned on my computer (it's an hour later) and there's still no noise coming from the PC. Hopefully it was just a heating problem and that it was my mobo telling me or something.

Yeah! It was like that noise... Just not as loud. lol Even with my computer case opened, it's not THAT shrill. But yes, that's the noise. Also pretty sure it's coming from the fan that's in my PSU.

I've had this problem many times before and it always turns out to be one of the fans. It could be coming loose from the case, causing it to vibrate, or the fan itself might need replacing.
