It took me some time to find out why it happens. Turns out, most of the re-release versions (mostly 128k ones), in addition to changing the sound effects, differed from the original release in exactly one thing: the number of points you were given for that moth thing. From what I gather, you got five times more than in the original release (which makes sense considering how harder it is to kill that moth compared to regular enemies).

So... just divide the number of points you're getting by 5 - and you should be set. Sorry about that.

I got two reports from different people who were also getting 5 times as many points as I intended, but they eventually wrote it off as something that depended on the weapon they were using or the number of lives or power-ups... which is kind of confusing as it implies that they got a different number of points in the same game. But I'm sure someone will eventually write a thesis on this figuring out the real conspiracy behind it and get a diploma in pixels. )
