No, only if you activate a CD key from an old boxed copy.

I... I threw away my old Half-Life disc when I moved house a long time ago. :(

Yeah my Half Life Anthology activated a crap ton of games as well, every now and then I seem to get an old Valve game as well because I didn't start off with all of them. I'm hoping for a Left 4 Dead activation because L4D 1 is the only Valve game I don't own I believe.

Yes, if you activate any retail version of older valve games on Steam they give them all to you. You can still find boxed copies of CS or HL in bigger Best Buys. I got almost every valve game made when I bought the CS box and an orange box. Since then I have only needed to buy l4d, 14d2 and portal 2 to stay on top of things.

it was not Part of a set it was an original boxed (and discounted judging by the price tag) version of the game. Also would it be possible to activate another old steam game and gift the extra games? or will it not let me do that or something dumb.

It's great isn't it? I actually tried to do this the other day with my Half Life: Game of the Year Edition disc I bought back in 1999. However much to my dismay it turns out that I must have created a Steam account (via an update years and years ago perhaps) and now I can't consolidate the license into my wasabinator account. It's great that Steam does this (license key registering) but not so great that they are very inflexible merging accounts. Support steadfastly refused to transfer the license even though I proved I am the legitimate account holder, although they did help in tracking down the old account name which I had totally forgotten. So I guess I will need one of those account switcher utilities or will try to win the licenses here :)

This is more about Steam then steam gifts, but i thought you guy would find this funny in a way. So i was looking through my old games and found my old copy of day of defeat a game i never played because back then i had no internet connection for myself so i decided to try activating it on steam. it worked... accept instead of just activating Day of Defeat it activated Half life, Half Life Blue Shift, Half Life Opposing Force, Team Fortress Classic, Counter Strike, Death match Classic, and Ricochet. Obviously they have a few issues with their activation service, though technically I'mm not getting anything i don't own i do actually have all of these minus Ricochet (what is it?) and Tf Classic though i have over the year lost a lot of my keys (half life for example).
Long Story Short: Activate an old valve game on steam and you seem to get all the old valve games
