Haunting Ground (PS2) is great if you can get your hands on the game. No PC release, but worth a go.

Outlast is also good - but I wasn't able to continue it...not sure why. Maybe it's too extreme or just not motivating enough.

Resident Evil 7

Soma, Outlast, Penumbra, Dead Space 1-2, Neverending Nightmares, Amnesia: The Dark Descent, Layers of Fear.

Hard to give a recommendation if you don't say what you are looking for in a horror game. If you are mainly interested in first person and realisitc graphic you already have some good suggestions in this thread (although I wouldn't call games like Outlast really Horror as they are relying more on stress and shock values).

But let's give you some less popular suggestions:

• If you can live with a lot simpler graphics and you are searching a game with an eerie atmosphere and more story focused you could try Wait - Extended or Corpse Party
• Maybe The Last Door will work for you. Also has a really good atmosphere and awesome soundtrack but is on the lighter side and more a point&click game.
• If you are searching something for a good local co-op experience you should try Obscure as it really shines in that area.
• If you are searching for third person game in a more unusual setting take a look at DreadOut but some people complain about the graphic part of the game and the story may be confusing. But I still think it is a really good game.

For the case that you need a bit more information about these games they should all be covered by my reviews on my Steam profile. They also should be spoiler-free.

My favorite horror game is the Penumbra trilogy. By far, the best horror game you can find, filled with riddles and scares (not cheap scares though). Another good horror games are Metro 2033, Metro Last Light (although Metro 2033 is far better), and Singularity.

Alan Wake was a really awesome one if you like the feel of a third person type horror/shooter. I still need to replay it to get 100% of the story but for the price, it's a really awesome game!
