Photopea.com is free and online
Krita is free
Paint.NET is free (that's not the website, but rather the name of the program. Getpaint.net is the website.)

It's good to have options. :)

It really isn't. Its UI is FUCKING HORRID.

The fact the core Gimp devs have said they're not going to change anything despite years of complaints doesn't help at all.

Skill issue i'm afraid

When basic manipulations require steps that are impossible to guess and must be learned through a tutorial or manual, it is no longer simply a matter of skill.

An experienced / regular user can use GIMP efficiently after investing time to learn it. But for a novice or occasional user, learning or relearning how to use it is a hell of unnecessary complications.

PaintShop Pro, for example, is a much more intuitive software to use.

You're spot on. GIMP is horrendous to use. Can you make great stuff with it? Sure, but the same could be said about Microsoft Paint. Given enough time and effort, anything works. But GIMP is so far behind professional software that it's not even comparable at this point. If you actually want to get something done in a reasonable time, it doesn't cut it.

And that sucks, because an open-source image editor that could actually compete with the big ones like Photoshop would improve the space so much. Adobe is one of the worst companies out there, awful support, awful business practices and terrible pricing.

There is a patch to make GIMP look like Photoshop.

More alternatives:
Graphite - the most promising one. Aims to eventually become what Blender is for the 3D industry
Lazpaint
Pinta

Nothing wrong using comercial products. But I'd avoid Adobe, or paying blood-sucking monthly subscriptions in general.
If you use any of the open-source software on a regular basis, please consider donating to them 🙏🏼

Do you know the difference between Corel Draw Standard and CorelDRAW Graphics Suite 2024?

Comment has been collapsed.

What is the difference between CorelDRAW Standard and Graphics Suite?
For more creative control, including robust photo editing, choose CorelDRAW Standard. Or for the ultimate in vector illustration and page layout, photo editing, typography, collaboration, and professional print capabilities, choose CorelDRAW Graphics Suite.

Second google hit, a suite usually implies a collection of stuff.

I wondered the same thing, and found this comparison on their website. In my opinion, the biggest disadvantage of that Standard edition seems to be those limits on file formats. https://www.coreldraw.com/en/product/family/#compare

I've used GiMP's color rotation to make multiple versions of a monster, for when I DM D&D.

I think the simplest and most straightforward answer to that is art, sometimes altering a real photo is made purely for artistic expression. From there there's a myriad ways to do image manipulation and with a number of possible results only really limited by imagination, the tools, and skill of course.

Photos don't depict things "as they are in the real world" (and I'd go so far as to say that nothing does, human eyes included).

Lighting, picture quality and many other factors make it so that 2 people taking a photo of the same thing often end up with vastly different photos.

And that's just taking photos into account, because you can do a lot of things with image editing software that aren't even remotely tied to anything real, such as drawings or pixel art.

Doesn't the same logic apply to what you use as your profile picture? If the real world looks fine enough on its own, why do you need to use a human-created image as your pfp? Why wouldn't you just use something from the real world?

yes, you can manage licenses. I have multiple licenses and sometimes I need to recovery them because of disk crashing or something. You can do it in your account, so you can free licence on PC you dont use.

Sadly no, they stop the product 20years ago (the last version including it was PSP 9). The last version is 3.11. It's available on archive.org if you want it. I don't find another better tool (complete and simple to use) for animated gif creation, if you have another one I'm interrested !

No I'm with you. Jasc Animation Shop 3 was the best.

Sure you can use things like Vegas to make video gifs but nothing beat actual gif creation at it's core like Animation Shop 3.

I use these programs very rare. In some moment I used Photoshop cs6 and still have it. I wonder how look if you compare paint shop pro from t1 to old Photoshop cs6. Also this t1 is "forewer licence"?

In other words I wonder if it give me something extra or similar to these old version of Photoshop.

Yes it's a forever license: "Lifetime perpetual license that supports up to 3 devices."
But it don't include updates, so it's the 2023 version forever.

Thx in this case I will buy at last T1 (just in case). I also intrigued by this AI plugin from t2/t3 which works on local pc. It is also said it works ehith Photoshop too (but without info about specific version). But it is pretty high price considering I use such programs parodicaly (of course it is not high for PPL who will use it often - but of course Photoshop is still the best) ) .

https://affinity.serif.com/en-gb/

This one. Seriously guys. I'm a graphic designer and have used this to see how it compares to Adobe. It's on par with the Adobe CS6 software, which doesn't include some of the modern bells and whistles of Creative Cloud, but that's not an issue really. Anyone serious about this stuff should try Affinity. It has a 6 month free trial that you don't even have to give credit card info for. And you can buy a forever license for the entire suite for about 90 euro during Black Friday sale.

GIMP is not user friendly. Affinity is the only other software that even comes close to Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign. CorelDRAW kinda stinks in comparison.

Thank you very much for this info. It helped a lot to have idea about these programs and to make decision about tiers (I will buy only T1).

Ps. I also searched internet about programs and also found good opinion about Affinity.

You're welcome.

I had been using CS6 on my old home computer, and Creative Cloud at work before I was sick. But now that I have a new mac, I didn't feel like paying a sub for personal use, while I haven't been working as a designer. I tried out several softwares and Affinity is the only one that comes anywhere close.

There's a free Illustrator alternative called Inkscape, but it's really difficult to use for someone who was used to Adobe.
