You NEED this one. And I'm definitely not saying this because I'm selling it myself and want to get rid of it before the price drops, and before the sale starts (lies).

I had previously done a Google search that brought up this thread on Steam, Best Steam Backgrounds. It's a fairly large dump of images, but sorted into categories, which may help you narrow down what you want.

I also recommend SteamCardExchange.net. Every game there has a showcase that lets you see a preview and full-sized version of a background, as well as see what it would look like with your profile using their Background Viewer tool (after you login with Steam). Showcases also show you the going rates for the backgrounds and cards, and let you view emoticons and badges. Here's I Am Setsuna as an example - the village and town backgrounds are ones that would work well as desktop wallpapers, too.

Once you have a background you like, you can use steam.design to create a zip file that contains the chosen background cut-up into different images for the background of an avatar or artwork showcase. You may have seen people do this for custom animated GIFs in their artwork showcase that seem to be transparent or blend in with the background.

Many beautiful background are expensive, i use Twilight Forest actually.
But here are some affordable nice ones :
