I often read here on how people sometimes talk about having no money, no job, and how sometimes i read people with a job telling others how easy it is for others to get one, but it is not always that easy for some, i know that struggle very well.
I dropped out of school when i was 15 due reasons, then worked in construction because my father worked there, did alot of home schooling and got alot of computer related certificates, but i needed a driver's license to go to places, but i kept failing it, but i always kept myself open to any kind of job.

Anyway it's hard for me to even get an interview but i finally managed to get one again on friday, and hope finally for a change in the positive so my life can continue to grow positive in other directions too, plus side this one is also very closeby and doable by bike (so no transportation costs).

Discuss, if you have a job what do you do for a living, is it what you wanted to do? If you don't have a job, what is it you want to do?
Does not having a job holding you back in other things in life (like a relationship), does it depress you?
This topic is not just for or about me, if it can give some hope to someone, inspire someone, if you feel stuck, don't mind sharing it.

I forgot the No, retired/won the lottery, can't work option.

Do you have a job?

Yes, i work hard for my money!
No, and it's hard to find one.
No, i let others support me.
No, i am still in school.

I've worked all my life for what little I don't have. And I have been out of wok since April 2016. And it's getting harder and harder these days to find anything that I am qualified for. I have never been out of work this long before. It's highly frustrating.

Good luck with your interview!

I am very lucky, that although I have been without a job for a couple of months in my life, it was more like an earned holiday, than a finicial threatening situation. I am in my second post-university job right now, and it is likely I will stay in this job until I am old. It is not what I wanted to do 15 years back, but right now it is a good job :)

Edit: I was one of those "if you want to work, it is always possible" guys a couple of years ago, but that changed after a couple of friends and acquaintances had/have a very hard time finding a job. Even those who found a job now do something the are not too happy doing.
Tbh there are so many factors: Where do one live? How many mouth to feed? How much time you want to spend not working each week? ....
As you can't know and assess all those factors for anyone but yourself, I try to stay away from judging nowadays.

I was in astronomical research, I am an highschool teacher now. Sadly public research is not very safe to plan your life aournd in Germany (imho; most of the time 1 year limited contracts, max. of 12 years, after that you have to be (kind of) near professor level to get an unlimited contract). Being a highschool teacher I have an unlimited contract and earn more than I would have in astronomy. On the downside, I do not travel that much to quite so nice destinations any longer.

Oohhh astronomy has always been my passion but I'm most likely gonna end up a uni teacher because it isn't really a viable major where I'm from(Lebanon cannot into space :s).

If it is not too late and you are willing to work abroad (+your English is understandable), why not try astronomy? More than half of my colleagues were from abroad.

That's encouraging! I don't know, I'm not ruling it out. I actually actively want to work abroad but there's also only one uni that has an astrophysics major and it's a pretty bad one, so I would have to go study abroad and I don't think I'm read for that right now be it personally or financially. Apparently if you do really well in unis here you can apply for scholarships in European or sometimes American unis and have a good chance of being accepted so I'm sort of banking on that. But it won't be for a while still, I only just finished my first year.

I'm a software QA for a Forex company for 1 year (this is my 5th place haha) :D Sadly, i am all alone in terms of QA and the responsibility (my best quality) really ruined my health throughout the last year - was sick for like 4 times... stress lvl got big :D
Now I told the management - i dont care, find me another guy for the team :) Hoping that life would be easier with the new person in my team.
Had only 1 proper week of vacation in 1 year... other weeks used as sick leave cuz was cba to go to the doctor... but when i DID go to the doctor - took a real sick leave for 2 weeks cuz i had very serious sh*t...

The pay is good though :D I think nowadays IT jobs have more vacancy and are required everywhere.
Who do you want to be, Lugum? What is your dream job? :)

Thank you for asking :), i never knew what i wanted to be, not when i was a kid, not even now.
I am good with computers, i got a bunch of certificates (MCSE) but you either do support work (i don't like phone work) or go to businesses but as i stated above i kept failing to get my drivers license, else i could have had a job in that, years ago.
i even got some ideas for my own (food) business (everyone will always be hungry after all) with the idea so if i ever get children, i can pass something on because i fear in the future jobs will be even harder to get but i need some investment and maybe guts (if only i had someone to back me up) so not sure if that ever comes off the ground.
For this interview it's in the cheese making business so it's something totally different, the most imporant thing for me is in any job, i have to be happy with it, and that could be in a very broad range.

Hope your life will be easier with the new person in your team, and you are lucky to have found the job you wanted. :)

thank you for your hope :D
after all - being a big pain in the place for other people and poking them about their errors and "getting away with it" - sounds fun, eh? :D

Anyway, to open up your business i suggest you "cook in that pot" as a regular employee for some time, to learn all the tips and bottoms of the iceberg (dunno how it is correct, but i think you get the idea haha)

Before I used to work in IT companies and my current company actually sounds more challenging :) or maybe it is because i used to work in a team of 3+ QA people and now i'm alone :D

Still, the best of luck to you and you would actually have a bigger chance to get a good job if you finish university... After all - the golden rule is:

In university/college they say - Forget what they taught you at school.
At work they say - Forget what they taught you at college/university :D

A good education never hurt anyone. How old are you?

Sure sounds fun yeah.

It might be a good idea to work for some food company thing, but if it's such a big place (like Mc Donalds) it might be too crowded for me and too many influences (same problem as in getting my drivers license).
My idea is simple with 1 or 2 products, which i could do by myself (and perhaps expand in a future) bring my laptop with me so i can even play a game when it's not crowded. Dunno and it sounds weird but sales is not something i would be happy with unless it's my own business, but i would also not be doing it for just myself, but for potential future children (regardless if it's their dream job or not but they have a choice).
Before Starbucks came in my country i already had that idea of take away coffee, and almost went ahead with someone i found through the internet, but she backed down in the end because she didn't dare to risk her money and house. Now years later Starbucks is doing good here.

But University is not granted for everyone, and we got a thing called HBO that's a level below university.
Here even people with university or HBO are persueing other jobs then they learned for, it's an era we live in, in which we just have to accept that.
Overal yeah always finish atleast your school, and i had to drop out not because i wanted too, but i had too, probably because i was also bullied for years.

Let's keep it i already hit my thirties.

I don't really know what to do, or want from life, which pains me much.. I have no goals or set objectives either, no dreams possible to achieve.. Currently I'm studying for now, and I'm in lose/lose situation, I'll probably fail my conditional exam and my adventure with university will be over. I don't want to give up, but I somehow won't believe I'll be ever happy with what I'll get, including jobs. Time is slipping through my fingers and I'm not able to do anything, having problems with choosing Your future and so on...
By being in doubt my whole life I've been holding back on almost everything. I envy people who know what they want.
Sorry, I'm on breaking point.

I been in such dark places too, worry and panic about every bill, will i ever get a family of my own, or just will it ever get better period.
But in the end i got myself out of it thinking worrying about stuff doesn't change things either, so i stopped doing it.

That or just a talk, hope it will bring you the help you need.

Same here. Talking to a psychiatrist or family didn't help. I realized each one has its own world and problems and only you will probably comprehend what you're going through. Don't know what to do, I'm just waiting for something (or nothing)...There must be something surely that I missed...

I even have to force myself to read what other people like me are writing about themselves, it's gotten that painful... Adressing my situation is also painful...

I'm trying to write my own thoughts and advices to myself, but it seems I'm so deep in my well I can't keep my notes organized enough and I fail to check them often. Last thing I remembering writing though was about that what you feel right now doesn't matter, it will go away eventually, only things that you will regret doing/not doing later will stay for the rest of your life matter. Therefore my priority must be identifying things that will bring me regret later and addressing them, not doing pointless stuff now. But heeding my own advice and being able to do this thought, I apparently just can't...

I would give you a hug right now as my situation is exactly the same. I got a year till my national exams after which I'm supposed to go to university, but I have literally no ambitions or anything I want to be, not even what major at university I wanna take. Sometimes I just feel like I'm too slow and not good enough for the world and that I'll fail hard in my life. I'm trying to not think about it for now and just try to find something that would interest me or inspire me somehow. I got a little better thanks to my boyfriend who is always saying it will be fine and is trying to show me a lot of different opportunities or interest me with any hobbies. I don't know if it would help you, but it did help me a litle, knowing someone supports me and wants to help me. Though I still can't understand how people can keep up with this world.

As a person who has had some experience with Psychologists/Counselors/etc., I would remind you to try any one professional for a few sessions and then decide whether or not it is benefiting you. If you feel you are "making progress," then you may decide to continue with that person. If not, try a different one. You are a unique individual, and not every professional is a good fit for you.

Yes, but people forget that fact when shopping for counseling services. Instead of looking for someone who "fits," people tend to shop for a shrink the same way they shop for a plumber, looking for skill level and experience. That is not the best way to get help..

Well first of all I wish you the best with your interview on Friday!

I've got some useful qualifications and experience and I've done OK for jobs in the past. I was a wheelchair technician for a long time - I attended physiotherapy clinics and customised wheelchairs to suit individual patients. It was rewarding but I worked with a lot of of terminally ill children and it it could also be very difficult. I spent some years as a systems development manager which was well paid but quite stressful.

Things are pretty bad in my area right now though and work is hard to come by. I had a good job as a stock controller over Christmas but the company lost the contract that I was working on. I've been doing a lot of temp work as a fork lift truck driver but pay and conditions are getting really bad due to so many people looking for work. I also help out with a family business and sell artworks to bring in money.

Things don't really seem to be improving in terms of employment prospects locally so I'm wondering what to do in the longer term. I'm seriously thinking about moving to another area where I have family, certainly I think I'm going to help go down South and help run a campsite with my siblings for a few months in the Summer. I might try and go full time with the art. I might even try moving to a different country - I qualify for an Irish passport so I can evade brexit at least.

I feel really bad for younger people nowadays - it seems especially tough for anybody now, let alone trying to get on the career ladder without experience.

Sorry for rambling - that turned out to be a longer post than I intended...

Thank you for the wish and story (no rambling at all :)).

There sure is alot of diversity in your jobs. I don't know how old you are but yeah 20-30 years ago seems like you could really be and train yourself for whatever you wanted to be, unlike now (most companies even expect you to have like 10 years of experience) and i fear it will only get even worse for future generations.
I had an uncle that went from being a butcher to being an IT Specialist. that was 20 years ago.

I wish you all the best too in finding a job too, whatever it will be.

A lot of stuff really is down to region where you are at. I've travelled about a lot, worked all over the UK. There are some places in the UK you can literally just walk down the street and get a job instantly. Other places? Good fucking luck getting anything.
Really though getting a job is very much who you know rather than what you know, unless it's a large company that hires on batch with huge turnovers chances are you are never going to get a foot in the door. It's sad but true. With costs of living overtaking earnings I highly doubt there will be kids from the next generation ever able to get on the property ladder and if you don't have any support? Well good luck again since you're pretty much screwed. That's before you get onto stuff like pensions. Previous generation is about to be in for a massive culture shock when nobody wants to pay for their pension, because nobody can
There is going to be a massive crisis coming with a forgotten generation who will not be able to get into the workplace and never leave home or have a future due to having no money, and really it's our own fault. Anyone sensible saw this coming two decades ago but burried their heads in the sand and did nothing.

For me it's hard to find a job, cause in my country u have to do mandatory military duty to get in a normal job. I'm an engineer, graduated last year. Still I didn't go to military, cuz it's against my thoughts. Due to this reason, I can't even get an interview. I applied more than 200 engineering job, but none of them called me back. That's why I decide to move Hungary to volunteer for a year. We will see what's gonna happen next year.

I have tried and tried to get any kind of work (freelance, short term, long term, anything) and I usually don't even get a polite "no." The problem is that my artistic skills are undervalued, my programming skills are obsolete (ActionScript 3, anyone?) and I have no idea why I'm not getting any callbacks for design. Actually the driving itself was never the problem (even the lessons always went great), the other people in traffic were. :p
Somehow on exams i always got too nervous, one time i even tried to get past a truck that was standing still but didn't see the moving car behind it and the one judging the test hit the breaks hard. I find it's harder here then in some countries to get your license.

After 4 exams you get a special exam, even allows you take a break if you need it.
On my 5th exam i requested such a break but after 1 minute the one judging my exam ticked his watch and said "i have more candidates after you"...in which i even stressed out more.
It's been several years since i done my last exam, 1 exam is 200? euro, lessons are expensive, you need a job to afford it, but to get a job you need the license, it's a circle.
I got some of those driving games on steam, not sure if it could help me with more insight on other traffic too.
But heck it's been a very long time even having treated myself on anything, and the first thing when i will get a job is to get myself a new pc.

Good luck with your interview and with your job hunt!

I used to be a researcher in plant molecular biology but decided to quit my job to enjoy/take care of my daughter, when she was born 18 months ago. I sometimes do odd translation/editor/reviewer jobs but mostly I focus on my family.

As she (and other kids we may have in the meanwhile) grows up or if we ever get into financial difficulties, I'll probably start looking for some kind of steady job but, for now, we are doing fine :)

Good luck with the interview Lugum!

I got lucky. I left college after 5 years, without a degree (I needed about 20 more credits but I was miserable and never would have finished). I had no idea what I wanted to do, and no training in anything specific. I had been working since I was 16 but only in retail. I was running out of money, borrowing from my dad to pay my bills, and not working at all.

I went to a temporary staffing agency just to try to get any kind of work, and they placed me with a company doing contract work for the US government (in human resources and HRIS). I didn't really understand it at first, but I asked lots of questions, and after about 3 months, I realized two things: I was getting pretty good at it...and I loved it. That was a shock! I had never had a job that I loved before. The company offered to hire me, I accepted, and I've had the same job ever since. I still love it, and I'm really good at it, which is crazy because there are not too many things in life I am really good at. The only other thing I am really good at besides my job is eating cookies, I am a champion in that area.

So I am lucky. My only stress is that the contract with the government agency gets re-bid every few years, and I have to try to get a job with whichever company wins the contract. That first company lost the contract in 2008 but I got the same job with the winning company. Now I'm going through the same thing: the current company lost the contract, so I am trying to get in with the winning company. Hopefully I'll be able to do that.

I definitely know the feeling of not having any idea what to do with your life, but if you keep grinding, and stay optimistic -- and take advantage when you get an opportunity -- things will get better.

Thank you, I guess i am a fighter ever since i was born, i am the only survivor of a quadruplet (think it also impacted my life more then i thought then before), years of been bullied, years of trying to find my place in the world.
It really does take just a moment for your life to change, one i been waiting my whole life on, and yeah i keep the faith (hard as it may be sometimes) even with a job it won't solve all my problems, but atleast i'd be a start.
Like my biggest wish in life, is a family of my own but while some guys have no problem relying on a woman financially, i could never do that and perhaps also why i didn't persue a relationship, with a job i can also atleast (for myself) start to persue that.

A mix of things, to be honest. Mostly being a job orientator (i don't know if thats the correct term in english) and some office desk work in the city hall trying to improve job opportunities for the unemployed.

Sadly, pretty much every important decision depends of politicians and they just don't care, they just want numbers or short term results, wich doesn't exist.

I think it's with most countries if not all, they make promises during elections and then forget about them after it.
They only care about themselves and the job they will get after it.

Here they make firing people easier, immigrants have priority in getting a job (which is another (political) discussion), and making an economy so poor that noone wants to spend, so shops close down, more people laid off, so that's even more money gets less spend etc etc.

I've started to cross off jobs I don't enjoy, so fast food and grocery stores are currently marked off. It's entirely about comfort and speed of work. Fast food is way too fast and stressful for me, and grocery stores are just not for me. I can't really seem to actually get any kind of job in retail, though.

Go play Piranha Bytes games (Gothic and Risen) in german. When you get all the irony and sarcasm which makes these game so awesome in german (since its the mothertongue of the developers) you're ready xD

Or Stuff from Deadalic like thisone.

A friend of mine actually recommended me Gothic last week! I own Edna & Harvey: Harvey's New Eyes so I will make sure to play that one ^^

Gothic Series is awesome, but keep in mind its pretty "outdated" to todays standards. Risen is kinda compareable with better graphics. (but not up-to-date either ofc^^)

I used to work at an oil and gas company, but it went bankrupt because of the crisis in the industry and in my country, as well. I didn't like at all, but for a fresh out of college guy it was awesome to get all that money.
I've decided focus on getting my masters degree for now and maybe try to get a job at something I care about later. It's only depressing when you don't have an "attack plan". If you don't have a job, but you're investing your time into something that might help you in the future, it's fine, I guess.

Anyway, good luck with your interview. Be confident!

You can easily do home schooling here, and i wanted to follow an IT study, but having no money i took some second hand study material and do some exams (eight of them) that way, hoping by that time i would have found a job and being able to afford to continue the study.

It didn't happen and by now even if i could afford it, i don't think i would persue it again, it's a good 3 years of studying (on top of a job) and no experience in that area, think it'd still be hard (for me) to find a job, in this country already people that have the proper skills are quickly marked as too old.
I'd now rather stick to a job i can find and hopefully can train myself in there.

For some (especially if you are still young) that might be a plan, for others a bit less.

Thank you, i will do my best.
