I've heard it's because the codename was something like "Windows 8.1.1", 8+1+1 = 10. Therefore, Windows 8.1.1 is Windows 10.

So basically it's just Windows 8?

like akashash5 wrote it's code for checking old OS'es and with that thing theres only ~4k hits, since they're lazy and don't want to correct the code, they shall skip win 9

Oh okay. Now I understand. Thanks, both of you.

Its startwith to check old OS versions like 95,98.
It would have also worked for Windows 9 hence they skipped to 10.

I believe the reason why they skipped 9 is because it could be confusing.

You have Windows 8 and 8.1.

However, really old versions of Windows are called 9x, so we have 95, 98, 98SE, whatever

Now of course we're all smart people and we know that 9.1 or 9.5 is different than 95, but I'm pretty sure that's the reasoning.

Screw the people who are just pooping out new technology (often times barely different and simply under a new name), didn't Windows 8 come out just last year? Or even earlier this year?

Windows 8 came out two years ago.

Exactly, after 2 years they are releasing a product with almost no significant improvement

That could be said on pretty much every successful release. XP was a minor improvement over 2000, 7 was a minor improvement over Vista. The ones that people hate are the ones with big changes. So sounds to me like 10 could be a good one.

I personally don't mind change since I tend to jump a few generations(from 98 to XP, from XP to 7), I just don't like the new name.
Why skip 9? Just to annoy people?

It should actually be 8.2 or something. The changes don't warrant a 1.9 version jump

I know, that's why I'm annoyed. This is a trap for the unninformed.

It's the same as 7 being Vista.1. Multiple desktops, a UI which adapts to the I/O devices connected, a common source for all platforms, these are IMO bigger changes than Vista->7.

I just prefer boring old numbers instead of branding bullshit, ubuntu kicks out a new version every 6 months but they at least have the decency of using a coherent numeration system.
PS: I gonna go to sleep now.

It was planned as 8.2 at first, but thy wanted to distance themselves from Windows 8 as much as possible.

There hasn't been ever much logic in MS product naming.

Windows Vista was generally refered as "windows bosta" around here. It translates as "windows shit".
So yeah, they didn't even managed to sound appealing to the people that speak the language they were borrowing the word from. Why I hoped they getting rid of names in favor of nunbers would fix they ilogic marketing department.

Why not skip 9? Windows version (ignoring some minor releases) were named 3, 3.1, 95, 98, 98SE, ME, NT, 2000, XP, Vista, 7, 8, 8.1. If there's anything consistent here it's the inconsistency.

This time they didn't even tried to hide it. They think we have an extremelly short term memory.

We do, for better and for worse.

We also tend to get hung up on really unimportant stuff, like naming.

I think Kwidin got a valid explanation here. Since some older software look for your Windows version string starting with "Windows 9" to detect Windows 9x, those programs would have had issues with Windows 9. They're probably avoiding a whole lot of problems by skipping the version number.

Ha, didn't saw that. That is a good reason to skip win 9. I would love to see MS giving that explanation in a conference. I wonder how they'd do it to not look bad, probably a bunch of weird excuses.

They've been pretty consistent with their release timetable:

  • Windows 95 (1995)
  • Windows 98 (1998) +3 years
  • Windows 2000/Me (2000) +2 years
  • Windows XP (2001) + 1 year
  • Windows Vista (2007) + 6 years (that's he odd one out)
  • Windows 7 (2009) + 2 years
  • Windows 8 (2012) + 3 years
  • Windows 10 (2015) + 3 years

Money money money. Today world is crazy because all the corporations must have a growth. Every new damn CEO or other stupid director must show how good he is and they are pooping new games, movies and music. There is no art in this anymore. Marketing and money are only important things today.
