Just signed up today and I like the idea. I see how this is great for the people hoping to get free steam gifts, but what is the incentive for people to keep creating giveaways? Just curious, I'm not knocking the site, just wonder how this works over the long haul?

If people stop giving or invite people that don't eventually gift, then less people gift and it dies. The only thing that keeps it alive is positive people and eventual pruning of bad apples/mass ban waves.

CG is entertaining the idea of AD's or sponsorship to generate money to fill in gaps that may occur but that's not something currently going on.

I really don't understand this either. Let's say I feel generous and give a few games away. I then use the points I rack up to enter a few other giveaways, but I don't win anything because there is an obnoxiously large amount of users just in on this trying to get free games and nothing else. No, there is no incentive, and no, I will not be using this site until it is easier for people who post giveaways to win than people just entering giveaways.

I don't think you understand how generosity works.

Well, he is banned. So at least he figured out how to be a douche and get kicked from the community.

LOL! That's kind of amusing. I wonder what caused it.

We have ideas and are discussing perks for members that post giveaways (among other things), but I can say with absolute certainty that we will never give somebody increased chances to win a particular giveaway because they've given away games themselves. If you want to obtain games because you're giving away games: look into trading.

Edit: This was supposed to be a reply to linkingday above.

So what's the point of this site then? I have no problem with giving away games, but I'd much rather give them to someone I chose from a thread of posts (like on r/playitforward) rather than have it go to some random user who was only able to afford the points to buy into the giveaway because some other users gave games away.

When the site launched there wasn't a points system at all, and it was observed that a lot of the userbase entered pretty much every giveaway that came up - regardless of their interests. The points system was introduced to make people think about which giveaways they enter, to enter ones they are genuinely interested in winning.

The giveaways that I have created, I created simply to get rid of extra copies of games I had. I choose to give them away here to ensure they go to people that are actually interested in the games I put up, and that everybody who is interested gets a fair chance of winning the games; while providing a fun, gambling-esque (albeit with virtual points) experience for members.

I think that's the idea a lot of giveaway hosts, and the site, subscribe to.

This is why I came to the site as an early adopter.

If you want people to only enter the games they're most interested in, I think you need to reduce the amount of points earned, or at least remove the cap. When someone is at 250~300 points they will probably enter raffles they otherwise wouldn't enter, since it's "free" to do so -- whether they enter that raffle or not, they have the same number of points. As the site gets bigger and bigger this is going to be a larger problem, and I think the site is going to crumble.

Or maybe this this only a problem right now since the diversity of games on the site is a bit low.

We need contributor giveaway options :). No "extra chances" in giveaways, just giveaways that, when being created, have the option to be solely for those who have given away games, and had the giveaways confirmed.

Obviously there'd be a few more things to nail out, but that's the gist of it. Like, how many, and how long would successful giveaway(s) keep them a "contributor"? But ya, those things can get hammered out as it goes along.

I just really would like to see this option implemented.

I would probably still do the majority of my giveaways to the public, but it would be nice to have the option to sort of "reward" those who are actively participating and keeping this place rolling along.

I agree; this is the best way to keep a continual investment into the community ongoing.

I think the incentive is just the sense that your extra gift copies are going to someone who'll value and cherish the game, and if you buy games to gift to people on here, it's about the sheer generosity of it.

Basically, linkingday and OP, pure goodwill. Strange, right?

Except there's no way to know whether the people who recieve the game are actually nice people who will respect you for giving them the game or are just scumbags or Russians who just want free shit. Strange that I want the people who get my free games to be as generous as me, right?

click on their profile. Talk to them in chat. Get to know them, play some TF2 (most common game people have). When I gave out Monday Night Combat some of the winners were people I had already chatted with on the forums and group chat.

Then talk to people, have fun, and be a part of the community. There is a way to do private giveaways, y'know. Limit it to the nice people of your choice.

I was thinking the same thing when I first joined the site. I wondered how it could survive purely off human generosity and goodness, but somehow it's working! We've got over $30,000 worth of gifts given away (although that might be inaccurate because there's that troll rolling around right now), but nonetheless we've raised a ton of money and our community is thriving. I believe that as long as the site stays invitation only (so we don't get trolls and stuff), the site will continue to grow in this good direction.

This is an interesting idea and to show my support I have created a giveaway. In the long run I don't see this model sustaining itself unless the people creating giveaways get some sort of perk or point increase. As it is approx. 2/3 of the members are just hoping to get free stuff and will probably not giveaway anything. I see this number getting worse as more freeloaders flock to the site as the word gets out. With so many entries and so few gifts eventually the user-base will dwindle as very few members will win. In conclusion, there needs to be incentives to give games or the site will kill itself.

I think the fact that we're invitation only helps slow down the site's decay. Since it's a closed community, it stops floods of trolls and people just wanting free stuff. I think as long as it's closed and people are careful about who they invite to the community, the site will survive for a long time.

I hope you are right too. But recently I can't even sit in the chat box for a few minutes without some troll coming along asking for an invite, then cursing at us (in various languages :D) if they don't get it. It's nice this site has a large and active community, but we'll see how things pan out in the days to come. Hopefully smoothly and the tide of invite trolls will recede.

I haven't created a giveaway yet, but I do plan too give back to the community when the situation arises.

And as for trolls, it's the internet and they are everywhere..... feed them at your own risk.

I agree that it'll work out. The majority of the games are well-priced for their value. A couple of bucks, and I can feel like I genuinely contributed. If I hold out until I win something, then throw out a different game in a giveaway, I'm straight-up FUNCTIONING. And everyone wants to function. It's what makes relaxation so damned enjoyable. And, at the worst, it helps justify snobbishness. -.-
