But seriously, rogue-likes are a lot of fun to get into. You can start with dungeons of dredmor, and work your way uo towards the real deal.

Most of the people play Dwarf Fortress with downloaded graphics sets, you donť have to play in ASCII.
You even get little dwarfs instead of geometric shapes. :)

To be fair you'd have to be as old and retro as me to 'appreciate' a good ASCII nethack game. And it's a bit harder to swallow when other games in the Rouge-genre have at least some graphical representation: Dungeons of Dreadmor and the free Desktop Dungeons come to mind.

You're going to have a hard time convincing anyone under 25 that ASCII based rouge games are 'retro-cool' :p

Come on, people aren't graphics whores just because they complain about a game that barely has any graphic at all. I never said the game is bad, but I don't understand why they don't use simple sprites, it doesn't need to be anything fancy! Look at VVVVVV, for example. It has very simple graphics, but they actually add to the charm of the game and serves it primary purpose: being very clear as to what is what in the game (backdrop, enemies, items, etc).
