My first fantasy books as well, before any science fiction, and my introduction to modern (70's) rock. I would listen to the local Rock Station while I read in my room at night, not something I could have ever done in public during the day - no privacy (bedrooms were for bedtime, not playing in.) I don't think I would have developed any interest in modern music or fiction (and thereby science) had not those two happened to coincide just as they did when I was so impressionable.
