Ricky Gervais is quite a comedian, some of Bill Hicks is great, some Craig Ferguson, Rhys Darby for something completely different and Geoge Carlin of course.

It's mostly due to the fact that I don't know many english-speaking comedians. I do enjoy some of them when I can catch them on TV but that's one of the few I can remember. So, using your analogy, it's more akin to I don't know much hamburger places but I like McDonalds.

To mention a couple I haven't seen mentioned yet, the only live show I've seen is Gabriel Iglasias. And it was amazing fun. I think he ended up going more then an hour over the time he actually had if I remember correctly, and he interacted a lot with the audience. It was the last show of the year so he had a lot of fun with it. One of my favorite parts was when he was telling a story about his mother in the hospital, which was a fairly serious and personal story, and then someone walked up to the stage and gave him an alcoholic drink. That whole thing was hilarious.

Another comedian I like whom I haven't seen is Mike Birbiglia. I really enjoy his stuff and would recommend checking out Sleepwalk With Me, My Secret Public Journal Live, and his other stuff. Good comedian.

I don't really know any English comedian besides those who are really famous. But, as a French speaker, my favourite comedian has to be Pierre Desproges (I recommend this guy for anyone who understands French, and also like black humor).
