So I'd like to get some kind of controller to play Steam games with, but I'm not familiar with that area at all. So maybe you guys can recommend something to me, and give me the reasons why.

I know that a lot of people use the Xbox 360 controllers, but it seems like a lot of Steam games don't support it, or do they? Is there perhaps a universe controller that can adapt to any game? Would it just be a regular Xbox 360 controller, or does it have to be a specific kind?

EDIT: IF I GET THE XBOX 360 CONTROLLER, is there any program I'll have to download to make it work on my computer, or will it just work automatically for a game?

I use Razer Sabretooth. It woks really good and I like the sound of the hyper response buttons (makes a similar noise like a mouse click). It is pricey though. Advantage of 360 controllers is that if the game supports controllers, 360 will work straight away...even the button mapping will show 360 controller if you can change the controls. For PS3 controller, you need to use 3rd party programs like MotionInJoy to emulate a 360 controller. My experience with it hasn't been that great. Not sure about controllers made for PC though, never used them.

360 controllers are plug and play, although at first you might have to download a microsoft controller diver to get it fully working. Mine has worked without it, but I got it anyway.

Most of the time, a 360 controller works fine out of the box. Some games aren't compatible, but most on Steam will be.
