Yup, this is just another thread like you have already seen it dozens of times in the last weeks, annoying, right? I'm posting this here to satisfy my need for attention.

After seeing the green bar so many times ( and still not winning the stuff I actually want the most ) it is time for a break.
It's no fun anymore with 200k leechers, contributor whoring, "dev" giveaway creators entering giveaways, mods from the community and lonely nerds impersonating girls to win games.

Maybe I'll come back in a few weeks, maybe not. I won't close my group, but I won't take a single look at it anymore.
I hate you all ( except a few nice users )

So you didn't want A Virus Named Tom, Garry's Mod, Assassin's Creed, or any of the other awesome games you won?

Yeah.

I don't care if you DID give away Skyrim (to your friends)... Good riddance.

Why are you taking a website that gives you the chance of free games so seriously? Some people act like this a life changing place. It really isn't.
Never spoken to you before but you've just told me you hate me so I honestly couldn't care less. See you around attention whore :)

Look at the top of the page, I already stated myself that I'm an "attention whore" so that random dickheads like you don't have to reply.

That is why I called you an attention whore.
Also nice one being so aggressive to me when I've never been a dickhead to anyone on here unless they deserve it. You my dear told me and everyone else you didn't know that you hated us. You my dear were so very passive aggressive about it. So take a long hard look at who the dickhead is.

Before you make another post telling me that you already stated things that I can obviously see: I see your post at the top of the page. You used words. You bitched. You judged everyone you didn't know. You probably used a keyboard to type all this. You called me a dickhead. Your name is ThePsYkOKinG. You're not having fun anymore. You don't like other people winning things instead of you (that is what it comes down to if we are honest). You've entered for games you aren't really bothered about.
Missing anything?

you should enter on giveaways of games you like, dont make other users lose probability of winning just to get your game list bigger. You won a lot of games i would love to have, and thanks to people like you, im far away from getting them. (and since i live in a country where earning money isnt easy, buying them isnt an option)

I've noticed a trend... A lot of the big givers and early users of the site all made friendships early on and made all their private groups and do nothing but giveaway games to the same stagnant group of 20-40 people. They don't post in the forums as much and just stick to their private chats and little circles. Then they look at the public forums and are disappointed with the community they see.

Well if you want to make it a better community, then participate in it more! Be a leader instead of an outsider. You may feel like you've given so much, but then why do so many people in this thread not even know you?

I'm thinking THE EXACT same thing as you. It's great that they like their old friends and groups, but if they haven't even participated much in trying to talk to us that's pretty messed up. One of the reasons I don't join Private Groups even though it gives you a bigger chance of winning.

Don't get me wrong, I enjoy my groups and think they have their place here. But when you ignore the rest of the community, it doesn't do anyone any good.

I don't really like joining private groups that give away games, more interested in joining groups that have something more in common with my hobbies xD. But yeah, true to the second part.

to be fair, let me offer a different point of view. a reason some people almost exclusively do group giveaways is because there are way too many leechers on here, and with the contributor whoring that the OP mentioned, contributor values mean absolutely nothing anymore because they are too easy to inflate by spending a relatively small amount of money. then it's the people who don't resort to that sort of thing that end up getting left out because they managed to restrain themselves from trying to take advantage of a flawed system. combine all of this with the fact that blacklists are not normally permitted and, short of creating of managing your own group, there is no way to insure that your giveaway doesn't go to someone you would consider undeserving. doesn't exactly paint a good picture in my opinion.

that being said, I also can't really lend much credence to someone who has won 127 times on this site (as the OP has)

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

And I understand this side of it.

But how can he say it's no fun anymore with 200k leechers? Leechers don't effect him. He's only had one public giveaway with less than $1000 contribution. Why complain about a community you don't even participate in?

Contributor boosting? 99% of the givers buy their games on sale. Where do you draw the line at what is generosity and what is "contributor boosting"? 85% off? 88% off? 90% off? Is anyone who gave away Rome: Total War a contributor booster? Because he did.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

to me, anything more than 80% OFF should be on the bundle list, which of course does not stop any truly generous people from making giveaways. but yes, I understand there is definitely a gray area there and it's subjective.

I don't know what happened with Rome: Total War, but if it makes him a contributor booster as per the guidelines I just laid out here, then he is certainly a total hypocrite

Permalink

So if I give away ten copies of a $20 game on sale for $5, I'm an awesome generous person.

If I give away ten copies of a $20 game on sale for $4, I'm a no-good, community-destroying, scummy, contributor booster? It's so dumb. People care way too much about this. Just be happy that people here love giving and getting games.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Actually I said above 80% OFF so it would have to be less than $4 but whatever. The difference between 80% OFF and 85% OFF is 5-to-1 on your money vs almost 7-to-1. At 90% OFF it becomes 10-to-1. So where do you draw the line?

Like I said it is subjective and I guess that we will just agree to disagree then. People buying 10 copies of Perimeter 2 for $1.50 during this last sale to get $15 contributor for each of them doesn't sit right with me, especially when it's quite possibly the world's crappiest game ever (as evidenced by both it's abysmally low critic & user scores on MetaCritic as well as the fact that it was never given away here before last week despite being on Steam since early 2009) and was quite obviously only done so for the express purpose of contributor boosting.

Having said that, as long as things remain as they are and giveaway creators are not afforded more control over the giveaway of their own property to a level where I am satisfied with it, then I will almost exclusively be doing group giveaways where I am happy with who is able to enter, and will not be doing public giveaways in what is clearly a broken system in my opinion. And I am not alone in that, believe me.

So a game is on sale at GMG for 75%, plus they have their 25% promo code. Not an unusual happening. That makes the game 81.3% off. So you would add it to the bundle list and anyone who gives it away at that point is purely contributor boosting and is a blight on the community?

It IS so subjective, and that's the problem.

Is Perimeter 2 a crappy game? Most likely. Maybe there's someone who likes it. But what about Rome: Total War? It has a 92 metacritic score, and was almost never given away on the site before it went 90% off. Now, users have logged over 46,000 hours on the game!! Still playing it today with over 1800 hours in the last 2 weeks. On a game from 2004. It's getting played more in the past two weeks than Portal, a game that 70% of the community owns. There are people playing and loving some of these games that are considered a "problem" here.

Could the contributor system be improved? Maybe. I don't think any of us has the perfect solution though. Or maybe we just shouldn't be worried about it so much.

I wasn't taking into account coupons. There's no way to know whether someone used one or not anyway.

Here's a perfect example of what I was talking about though. The guy got over 20 copies of Two Worlds II: Velvet Edition at $0.16 each to contributor whore them for a value of $30 each, and now his contrib value is over $800. I would totally want to blacklist someone like that from any giveaways I would make and I'm pretty sure more money was spent on my Plants vs Zombies giveaway than on his entire list. I can only imagine how many people are able to say that. So this guy can enter a giveaway with a $500 requirement yet someone who gave away a couple copies of [insert big name AAA title] cannot? It completely invalidates the entire contributor system.

You are right there is no easy solution though. At least not short of an invite-only system for a new giveaway type (which is really the same as blacklisting I suppose) or running your own group giveaway as already pointed out.

Maybe I'll come back in a few weeks

That makes perfect sense, I hope you don't expect there to be any less "leechers".

I'm posting this here to satisfy my need for attention, I commend you for being the only person honest enough to actually admit it in their "Goodbye" thread.

Just buy the stuff you "want the most". The giveaways are for people with no access to games or for people to have the opportunity to try games they would've never really bought otherwise.

1) What the hell is wrong with leechers? I hate this contributor system they've got in place, because being a leecher shouldn't really be considered a bad thing. Some people just can't afford games, let alone games that they won't even play themselves. Of course there are a ton of leechers, because it's the whole point of this site. Give people that can't afford games new games. Not give games to get games, because get over to steamtrades for that.

2) Yep mods are pretty terrible, as is the community. Not saying I hate everyone, because there are some lovely people in the S. gifts chat from times to times, but I don't bother anymore because there aren't a lot of these fantastic people. Also, most people in S. gifts chat hate me so yaay

3) Nothing wrong with devs entering giveaways. You act like they aren't real people that like games too. They aren't rich.
