Srsly, why isn't there one?
There is a star next to the title when you want to gift something from a bundle, but what the star actually means is nowhere to be found. Will I get zero points for it? 50%? 10%? Always just one point? What?

If you do a simple forum search you would find dozens of threads asking this question, besides which you would find the original official statement. Not that hard. Would take as much time or less than making this post.

That's not the point. He wouldn't know that he has to search for it. It should be in the FAQ.

It's not about the search. It's about why it isn't there although this is afrequently asked question and the status to it has been changed several times

Which is a very good indicator that putting this in a visible spot is sorely needed.

Giving people crutches isn't how you teach them how to walk.

Comment has been collapsed.

That's a poor comparison. Giving people a wheelchair does not teach them how to drive, either. Wheelchairs and crutches are to help people that can (temporarily) walk on their own.

You're right that the information can easily be found using the search function, but the other point is also valid: if there are really questions that are frequently asked on the forum, they (and the answers) should be adapted to the FAQ.
As I already said, it's been announced (by jade) that an FAQ update is in progress.

Yeah, I totally agree. You should never teach anyone anything. They should always learn to fend for themselves. Schooling is useless! Training is useless!

Did you even read my post? I obviously am in favour of training, but my training methods differ from yours.

Giving people answers instead of teaching them to find their own answers only results in them coming to the teacher with all of their problems, as opposed to learning to solve their own problems.

Not sure this is even remotely about training methods.
Is there any point in having people feel bad or cheated for giving gifts, the very reason this site even exists? Is there any point in having the information hidden so deep it requires an actual reason to go digging for it?
You don't have to get people kicked by a horse before you can teach them to ride one.

I feel bad for having given away two games today and that's simply horrible. Right now I hate the policy and having been punished for not trawling all possible sites before gifting freaking games. The irony here is that, if contribution value were not relevant in the first place, there would not be any issue with gifting bundled games and them not "counting" properly. Curse you psychological biases!

Hm well yeah, I have been - for not having trawled through the myriad pages.
I still have some other non-bundle keys sitting around and in retrospect should have put them up first to increase my non-bundle contribution before wasting bundle games for whatever little added contribution they gave me today.
So I lost out big time and I feel punished for not hunting for the well hidden info I had no reason to look for.

Wow, impressive, you sound so driven and motivated to boost that contrib. stat higher, like some damn Wall Street Broker!

You sure give games away to people with a truly warm and generous heart.

You didn't lose out you cretin, you gave away some games to people and made their day a little brighter, for fuck's sake.

I agree with the sentiment that placing an explanation for what the asterisk means on the giveaway page, or adding it to the FAQ would be an appropriate course of action. My main contention however, is that if a person is coming to the forum anyway, it is not a hardship to run a search or two to locate the information they are looking for.

As for your stance on the policy, it's unfortunate you feel cheated in some way, but I don't see how you have been "punished" for gifting. It seems more that you were punished for attempting to treat gifting like a business of some kind. I do not necessarily disagree with that kind of mindset, but I think the developer of this site may. I don't really blame you for being disappointed though.

Like I said before, for about half of my steamgifts career, I didn't even know that the search function existed. I could not have used the search function even if I wanted to. Obviously, that doesn't excuse those posters from not using google, but it's much easier just to create a new thread (especially since most people don't know about the site keyword search functionality).

Also, most of the replies to threads about asterisk games just say "search" or "bundle". WTF is that supposed to mean? It's like when someone asks a question on the internet and then replies a couple of days later with "oh nevermind, I fixed it" without ever explaining the solution.

"Did you even read my post?"
It says: "Giving people crutches isn't how you teach them how to walk." My conclusion does not necessarily agree with what you intended the analogy to mean, because I probably don't see it the same way you do.

At any rate, FAQ stands for Frequently Asked Questions. The bundle question is certainly a Frequently Asked Question. In fact, it is probably THE MOST frequently asked question. So why is it not in the front page of the FAQ?

Honestly, I didn't know there was a forum search function (other than google) until I was a member for about 6 months. That little box in the upper right corner is nowhere near obvious enough.

OP is right, this is ridiculous. I feel cheated. I wouldn't have gave out the game I did if I knew steamgifts was going to credit me .02 cents for it. They should have something on the page where you select the giveaway that says what the * means. That was very cheap of this site to not provide.

The first time I was making a giveaway for a game that had been bundled (not a recent bundle mind you, but a bundle of which I was not aware of, which had been available months before I joined the site or knew anything about bundles) I noticed the asterisk and thought, "Huh, that's odd, now why would some games have an asterisk and some not?"

My next thought was drawn logically from the former, "Well, there must be some meaning behind the asterisk, it must differentiate the two assortments of games in some way." I, of course, wanted to know the significance of this sorting, but I knew it was not mentioned in the FAQ (since I dutifully perused it upon joining the site). So, I cleverly opined, "Perhaps the FAQ is a bit out of date, they just have not had time to update it yet, that is quite normal," and thus I came to the forum section of the site.

Being resourceful, and realizing that it would in fact be faster for me to search for myself, not to mention avoiding burdening the community with a question that surely had been answered before, I made use of that handy search box up top to find a thread which gave me my answer. I do not rightly remember what I searched. I suspect it was something obvious like "star" but it may have been "bundle game" or the like since I do believe I was able to discern that many of the starred games were from bundles.

yeah, i had to run a google search for that, because i couldn't find an asterisk on the page that had tiny text to specify it's indication.

There is a major flaw in your train of thought. You assume that asterisk marked games had been discussed before. While it's a valid notion in itself, there should've been some incoherent apostate who asked that stupid question.

And you'd get the same "Use search, moron" response you're giving now.

The point is to search for something you need, first, a reason to search, and, second, an answer to your inquiry.

An update of the FAQ is in progress, let's hope it will really contain the answers to questions that are "frequently asked" in the forum ;)

Btw: you can currently find the info by following the URLs in the FAQ (I admit, it's not user friendly, bit it is possible).

What this site did is similar to a product that makes a representation and then puts an asterisk at the bottom. However, in this case, the makers of the product didn't make it readily apparent what that asterisk meant. As most of you have already seen, EVERY product or company, states what that asterisk means somewhere easy to find. I couldn't find this anywhere on FAQ or on the giveaway page (where it should really be anyways).

Yeah the post about bundle games is kinda easy to google but anyways basically the maximum contributor value you can get from bundle games is equal to 20% of your non-bundle contributor value.

It's about the most "frequently asked question" on Steamgifts.
