Is $50 enough to enter the site? I dont think it is. What are your views on this. Would all off you be eligible still?

US$ 50 = £GBP 30.52
US$ 50 = euros 34.4

For the price of one full game you can join, this is too low really, i think it should be raised a little more.

What are your thoughts?

What are the base requirements to join the site?

We require all registered users to have at least $50.00 worth of games associated with their Steam account. This is to prevent users from creating multiple Steam accounts for use on this site, which might result in cheating. This value is automatically generated when you register, using the game list from your Steam profile.

Yeah, it's not too much. Especially when there are midweek and weekend sales that let you pump up your account value with ease. Maybe include another check for the number of games on the account? Obviously not counting free games.

I say $1,000 is a good entrance cutoff, and anyone who's currently below that number will be kick out of SG.

Seriously though, maybe this isn't the best way of screening out scammers.

well i think the value is sort of low because if you look at giveaway games 'pops' around they easily give you these 50 bucks ...

like Dirt 3 one for example

It must be higher!

What are you talking about, it always cost points - 50, then 120 because of dirt 3 and now it's 75 points per invite.

I am not talking about the point cost to invite some one new.

When you join the site steamgifts checks your account, if you have less then $50 worth of games you cant join, this is the way it is atm.

I am suggesting on increasing this. You clearly didnt read the thread.

Yeah it was increased this, too from 30 to 50 and I would love it to be increased to 100 dollars.

It's not high.. Just for people who can afford making gifts. When I start my job I'll make 1 or 2 for you guys, costing 99 cents, like a boss.

100 dollars would be fine (that's around 70 euros) it would prevent easily farmed 'free' games combos ...

so basically, you guys think that the most needy of gamers should be excluded from getting gifts, is what you're saying.

Needing - NO.
If the site is full of needing people then who will make the gifts?

the problem aren't these who need games the problems came from bots and farmers / spammers ...

it's not possible to differentiate between the two based purely on a dollar value of the account. if there was a second possible stipulation like $75 or account is older than 1 year". that would be fine, but just increasing the $ amount on an account will eliminate people who can't afford games. it's steamgifts not steamtrades.

If it's like that then it should be open for all... Most people now have DiRT 3 keys which they have activated on 4-5 accounts and use them for the site.. And it's 50 dollars.

Does your friend also visit churches and other charities to grab the money out of donation boxes, because they are there you know, and its not stealing if you are not caught right? Maybe he can even buy a new car if he expands his practices.

People with more money on their accounts games ect will more likely make a giveaway. People with 1 game are more needy.

But thats not the point im making here, $50 is a low ammount, anyone can have this on their account really if you got your game on sale. That means noobs can make fake accounts and make fake giveaways. Or make a giveaway for another account they have and keep using it to make invites and sell them off.

Permalink

Why is $50 too low? It seems enough that it would keep out most duplicate accounts, as they would need to buy a few games on each if they wanted more accounts.

I don't know if the cap needs to be raised but perhaps something that takes into account sale data. The sister site to this place, steamgamesales tracks when games went on sale and for how much, so perhaps the "value" of games can better reflect that. Obviously not everyone gets a game on sale so I'm not saying that some game you bought for 60 bucks new should only be worth 3 points now because it was on sale for 2.50 three years after release, more just an average being taken into consideration. Like say Jamestown, 10 buck game that's gone on sale for 5 bucks a few time, so make it average out to 7.50. Would not mind seeing something like that applied to the point values on this site as well. Granted, it'd probably be a pain in the ass to implement, so meh.

don't forget, Russians are low on money. that's the only reason to sell at lower price to us:)
and it is not Super cheap. it's just aproximately twice as cheap and only on few titles. you get the same price during sales.
also exploited games don't count towards the total sum.

are there so many gifters without even a $200?...
don't forget, people, who are low on money, mostly buy on sales, so it costs just around $50 to get a $200 account. would you go gifting here and there without even spending that low for yourself?

I have $1000 bucks on my account... Make it as high as you damn well like

It's pretty easy to get 50 bucks worth of games for four dollars if you use the right sale -- the civ 4 complete pack counts as like 100 dollars and can often be had for five bucks.

They should make HIB not count towards Account price tbh.

But you really can't do that. Once you add them to your account they are separate games. There's no way to tell if you bought them individually or got the bundle.

Permalink

Dirt3 is counted as 0 already and HIBs are counted at low price, if you have all the games from that pack

Permalink

On Steam 50$ usually equals 50€ sometimes even more.
Something more affective than making the number higher, would be not counting exploitable games towards your total sum.

If HIBs, Dirt 3, Eets, HL2DM and others which can be earned for free via promo, exploits, etc... $50 would still be enough, that's true.

Comment has been collapsed.

If someone is willing to spend more than $10 to make an alt (presuming Huge sales of 80% off on a $50 game) then they can. It's not like there aren't other methods in place to detect abuse of the system.

Really, who would be so desperate for free games and at the same time have $10+ to spend to increase their 1/500 chance to a 1/250 chance of getting a $10 game?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

As someone who usually only buys games when they are 75% or more off, I can definitely see raising the minimum. There have been enough pay-what-you-want and free games for someone to have a game library well over $100 while spending less than $1. For instance, HIB 3 is worth ~$70 on it's own. Alien Breed 2: Assault was available for free during Steam's summer event for another $10. Add in HIB 1 & 2 and you are over $100 for a potential cost of $0.03, and that's just for things available to everyone.

I think the best way to do it would be to exclude games known to have been free or pay what you want from the price.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

HIB 1, 2, 3, etc and all the various packs are actually properly recognized now. So if someone has all the games from HIB bought individually they'd be priced as individual games, however if they bought the packs, they'd be priced as the average cost paid for the bundles. So even if I bought all 4 bundles, that wouldn't amount to more than $30 or $40 max.

Later on when future bundles come out, yes, you could worry about someone who has thought it through and bought dozens of each bundle ahead of time just so that they can cheat the system put in place by SteamGifts and make multiple alts to increase their chance to win games.

Any game that is free on Steam doesn't count as above $0, and most games that were free temporarily are counted as $0 as well, i.e. HL2DM.

And if you buy games on sale at the most I tend to see games go on sale for (except in large packs) of about 80% you will still be spending $10 on each alt.
