Contributor value over $1.00 + 1 hour + public/private forum (non-crappy puzzle) = I love you with all of my heart because I actually feel as if I have a chance.
Unless I don't meet the contributor requirements. Then I feel I need to give more. Everyone wins! Yay!

STEAM Gifts needs to have a LOLocaust and issue a permaban for a specific game say Snuggle Truck and then allow the contest to move forward as normal but when it ends everyone who joined the contest and the person who created it get banned. Snuggle was just an example but it would get rid of a bunch of creepy bronies as well.

People who are less active on the site will catch any one hour giveaways that happen to appear when they check the site:)
I usually set the time of giveaways to end so I'll be around to send the game off right away. Sometimes that is an hour, sometimes a day or two.
I don't have a big preference for how long a giveaway is when I'm entering, only that the game is something I want.

It's just a matter of luck. Yeah, I can refresh SG once every hour to catch them, but if you create your 1H giveaway during my sleeping time I'm pretty much f*cked.

This. I leave in GMT+1 timezone. Which pretty much excludes Asia if I create one in the evening, and the Americas if I do it in the morning. But sometimes I like to do a really short giveaway. There's justr more adrenaline involved for a potential winner I suppose.
If you really want to catch the active members, probably just put op a link to private in the forum.

I like them, for the reason you mention: better odds. But that's for the public. If you're part of a community then longer durations are more supportive. For workers, different time zones, people on the toilet, etc etc. That's why groups and others will ask for longer times.

Yeah, I figured when I become part of a group, I would have to do the giveaways longer. But there are less people in a group, so my giveaways would have good odds. This thread wasn't about groups though, but about running the giveaways publically for everyone.
What bugs me, is giveaways like Tombraider, where I think you need to be crazy to join the giveaway. There were 9000 people in the giveaway for 1 copy of Tombraider, since the guy who ran it, had it running for a week. I don't even bother to join giveaways with odds that ridiculously high.

Yeah, my tastes for games also do not always match with what are AAA games. I posted a comment in a game giveaway for Toki Tori, that it was one of my favorite games. The person who was giving it away was sort of putting the game down, so I wanted to say it was a good game for those joining the giveaway.

I like them the best too. I hate entering long giveaways because I don't have much of a chance at winning those. And even if you miss some, big deal.

Well I just gave away Borderlands - Game of the Year Edition today and Disciples III: Renaissance - Steam Special Edition. I set both giveaways for $100 contributor value, and got 120 entrants in Borderlands - GOTY, and 258 entrants for Disciples III.
I think I would lower it to $30.01 for total contributor value, the next time, I give Borderlands - GOTY away on the site in a 1 hour giveaway. I would set a $50 contributor value for Disciples III - Renaissance - Steam Special Edition next time. I wanted to see around 400 entrants in both giveaways, in the 1 hour time they were running.

I been trying to run all my giveaways as 1 hour, so that there would usually be under 500 people in the giveaway, or sometimes under 300. I like to see people have a good chance of winning.
People who are active on the site, and keep hitting their browser refresh button, will catch these fast giveaways and join them. While people who are less active on the site, will not even catch the 1 hour giveaways. So I think the 1 hour giveaways support the most active people on the site, and give something to the most active members.
I like to hear other people's opinions on the subject. What do other people here think about 1 hour giveaways?
