It's not easy to come up with a good gift for someone you don't know, but some generic suggestions:
An e-book reader of some kind (depending on what works best where you live)
A digital photo-frame
A day at the spa or similar
A laser-tag party (well, my mother likes this at least)

Well, a gift certificate is best choice in my country. But each country has its own culture. I have no idea.
