I couldn't find anything official, so all of the following is going off player comments and wikis.
For those interested:

This non-[st] version of the game is stated to have the following modes, with 14 playable characters:
Arcade, Training, Versus ( offline and online ), Score Attack, Survival Mode

The [st] version of the game appears to add the following:

Improved Balancing
Campaign Mode
Mission Mode
Tutorial Mode
Bonus characters (4)
New "Cross-Cast Veil Off" mechanic

There's no way to upgrade between the game versions and, with the two versions not having interconnected multiplayer, the more recent version appears to be the only one with any active online multiplayer.

Interesting, I wouldn't have had a clue about all that. For the record the key is from the Fanatical Arc System Works bundle and as far I can tell I made a giveaway for the right thing.
